“Distinctively Different Hotel (in a good way!)”
Reviewed January 1, 2008

We agree with all other reviews posted, this place is quite special and very unique. It is a far from a "cookie-cutter" hotel as you can get. It is definitely a slice of Balinese live and culture with beautiful grounds, quiet location and attentive service.

If you are looking for a special place that gives you the feel of Bali, this is it!

Wonderful:
We booked this hotel online just 4 weeks before departure and got the last room, a first floor Rejang suite overlooking the lotus pond pool. This was the first stop of our Bali honeymoon and we booked the honeymoon package for 7 nights.
This hotel is not like any other we have stayed in, the old balanise style rooms all made of wood and straw are delightful, very spacious and comfortable, a suite rather than a room. Things are a mixture of traditional Bali building and historic antique fittings. Nothing comes modern, no marble floors, bright lighting or mod cons, just comfortable and traditional. Unlike other reviews, we found the beds very comfortable and the cleanliness fine.
The service was second to none and they could not do enough for you. Special mention to Nardan our “driver” who was the ideal person to take you to anywhere you wanted to go. If you book, get a package that does some of the traditional meals, they are well worth it with private dining in any room you want. Make sure you book the Beach BBQ and the Royal Tugadom dinner an experience you will never forget, with all the staff dressed in traditional gear a parade and dance to lead you to your meal amazing. We also did the full day cookery course in the Waroeng with a market visit. You go to markets to buy the food (be prepared it is an experience not for the faint hearted) and then bring it back and prepare your own meal in the evening. Don’t plan to eat out, there is nothing nearby and why bother, just relax here at night and go out in the daytime
A few points; this is not a place for Heath and Safety aficionados, leave your regulations book at home, electrics are questionable. Also there are a lot of pools and ponds with limited protection against small children, do not come here if you have a small child unless you can keep an eye on them 24/7 it is dangerous.
Note: Unlike some websites, their pictures do actually show what the place is like, other than the colour filters. This is a true representation of the place.
We also stayed at the Four seasons Jimberan and the Alila Ubud, however this is the place we would come back to out of the three. 10/10

Great hotel! We were there for the last three days of our honeymoon. We came from the Amandari and Amankila. What I loved about Tugu was the museum-quality atmosphere. We enjoyed exploring as you find interesting things around every corner. We also loved just sitting in the restaurant and listening to the Indian Ocean and feeling the soft breeze. The staff was very friendly and service-oriented.

There were a few things that were not quite to my liking, however. The beds, although beautiful and part of the visual charm, were uncomfortable. I agree with the last review in that not everything needs to be antique. In addition, the Indian ocean there is not really swim-able if you're not a strong swimmer. The waves are huge and powerful......though great for surfing as there were many folks doing that in the mornings. One other thing was that, although also visually charming, the lily-pad ponds create the biggest problem associated with standing water.......mosquitoes. However, we still opened the windows of our suite to enjoy the breeze, coming back in with only a few bites.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone who enjoys an experience unlike large chain resorts. This place is truly unique and I would come back in a heartbeat.

I am now writing this review while sitting at the pool area, staying here for a total of 4 nights.

In a nutshell, this hotel is outstanding in all aspects, friendliness and services of the staffs is impecabble, although I wouldn't say it is an exemplary one.

The hotel itself is build on ponds, and the labyrinthine walkways linking each villa are both romantic and confusing. The owner himself is a fanatic art and antique collector, and you can surely tell by all his personal collections displayed in every corner of the hotel. Although it might not be in a bad way, but I feel that it is being overdone in few aspects. For example it certainly does not feel posh to have a sumptuous dinner eating from an obscure chipped wooden bowl.

Another thing is I am very particular with regards to cleaniness, and it certainly does not feel good to arrive in a tastefully decorated room with spider webs in the bathroom corner and a yellow toe nail at the bedside. GOD knows if these were artfully left behind on purpose.

Nevertheless I would highly recommend this hotel to newly web couples who seek tranquility in a remote part of bali, and be lost in this heavenly place one earth.

This is definitely a great hotel to be in if you want to experience history, culture, hospitality, good food and personalized service. We loved the hotel setting with antiques everywhere and the romantic dinner by the beach to watch the sunset is definitely not to be missed. The hotel is owned and operated by the Anhar family. There is an interesting story about why the owner started the hotel. Read the book "Gathering Places" by Barbara Walker. The book can be found on the coffee table in the lobby. We stayed at a Rejang Suite wit a view of the Indian Ocean that had a great sunk in tub. An offering made of palm leaves woven in unique design and decorated with fresh flowers along with a plate full of fresh fruits are provided to us everyday. In the evening, a different but smaller palm leaves offering with a poem printed on raw paper were placed on wooden plate on our bed wishing us sweet dreams. We had massages in the Spa as well as the bale (hut) in the garden by the beach. Listening to the waves, feeling the sea breezes and hearing children's laughters in a distance, the massage offered a very unique experience. We tried all the different style of breakfast, Javanese, Balinese, Chinese and Western. We think the local favors far exceed the Western ones. The Chinese is not true Chinese. It was a new creation since the Chinese integrated with the Balinese for centuries. The only thing we were disappointed was the limited English skills of the staff. We also suggest not to book any tour from the hotel because their staff couldn't speak English well so he only acted as a driver. There was no local tour information offered and we had to ask the reception for a tour guide. We suggest to go into town to Kuta and negotiate with a tour/activities vendor. They are all over Kuta. They offer sharing tours or private tours. Private tour usually include driver, guide, entry fees and meals. We discovered that joining a tour with a credited tour guide is definitely the way to go. It was cheaper and you learn more. We had a great tour guide who had great knowledge of the culture and could speak English very well. His name is I Ketut Astadi. He works with his team mate driver Madam Rose. They both were a great team. His mobil phone is 08123615377. We learned a lot about the Balinese culture from him. If you can time it, try finding out when the next burial ceremony is and schedule yourself to be there. We missed it but we were told it would be quite an experience. We loved Bali and what it represents. We loved the people, the culture, the hospitality. We know we will be back there. Next time, I may want to start staying at Kuta to do all the shopping for two days, then, go to Ubud and stay there for a few days, and then end it with Hotel Tugu Bali where we can just relax and not go anywhere.

  • Liked — unique experience, quiet, hospitality, good food
  • Disliked — tour -- too expensive and staff does not speak English well. Don't book tour from hotel

We have just had a wonderful five days at the Hotel Tugu. The grounds and rooms are magnificent. Ths staff treat you like royalty. We had a great time trying items from their extensive menu and each night ate in a different beautiful temple room that are part of the hotel. There is lots to do in the area and the hotel drivers were good guides.
For a really special experience, with all the flavor and beauty of old world Bali, this is the hotel to stay at.

We are a little late in posting this review. This is one of our favorite places to stay on Bali. It is a little out of the way -- say 15 mintes to Legian but they provide free and timely transportation. The rooms are spacious, clean and so quiet. We found thhe food quite good and had intended to eat downtown but after a day touring we typically just chilled out and had dinner delivered to our pool room. What a serene experience. If you are more adventurous it's only 15 minutes to excellent restaurants downtown. The beach is across a small road and, like many Bali beches, is on black sand and iit does tend to stain the feet. But it is nice too walk on and the sunsets are glorious. We found the service very attentive --- all requests were speedily addressed. We will return.
