“Wonderful Kerala, loved the houseboat.”
Reviewed December 18, 2007

We booked our trip to Kerala with First Choice. Despite reassurance through email correspondence there were no building works in progress at UDS we were put in a room right next to where a new lift shaft was being installed! However Jeff, the rep, got us moved the next day to a great room overlooking the sea and one of the pools. The best rooms are the ones starting with 5,6 or 7. The rooms are very comfortable with emormous double beds, mini bar, cable TV (no English programmes but plenty of cricket!). The room boys are delightfuland and will do anything to help you. The rooms do not have hair dryers - for UK electrical appliances take a European adaptor as these will fit in the Indian plug sockets. Would recommend breakfast only basis as loads of other places to go try the local food. Breakfasts were very good, fruit, juices, cereal, sausages or bacon and an egg chef who will cook you an omelette, fried or scrambled eggs. For the more adventurous you can try the local sambal (veg curry) and dosa or parathas.

The hotel facilities are very good. 3 swimming pools open with plenty of sunbeds which sometimes get 'booked' rather early. The pool by the grill bar (nearest the sea) is good if you want drinks or snacks (good value). There is also a small gym and an ayurevedic centre. Prices here though are considerably higher than ayurvedic centres outside the hotel. Just outside to the left of the hotel is the Prikriti centre where we had wonderful massages at a third of the cost of hotel prices. the hotel had entertainment on most evenings, most of which was very enjoyable. It all finishes by about 10pm so you are not disturbed if you want to get to bed early. Don't worry about taking lots of books as there is a good 'library' by the middle pool

Local restuarants are located on the beach adjacent to the hotel - can recommend 3rd Rock or go to Lighhthouse Beach (Tuk Tuk costs about 200 rupees return) which is more lively.

We had an overnight trip on a houseboat on the backwaters. You can book these trips with restuarant owners on the beach - cheaper than through hotel or rep. It cost £120 for the two of us, would have been less for a larger party. A thoroughly relaxing trip with amazing people and your own personal chef. You have to like currys though and he will cook them to your taste. A great way to see life on the backwaters. The bedroom on the boat has air conditioning which is a boon as it gets very sticky in the evenings and there are a lot more mossies than in the hotel area. the journey to the houseboat takes about 4hours but it is worth it.

If you need any dental work can recommend getting work done while in Kerala as it works out about a third less than the UK. The hotel has an arrangement with a dentist who comes and gives a free consultation. The hotel provides free transport to and from the clinic in Trivandrum for the course of your treatment. He is currently getting a clinic set up in the hotel itself. Be prepared to accept your appointments will not always be kept as we got the feeling he was taking too much on. I had my final bridge put in at 11pm at night as I insisted I would not wait another day!

If you fancy new glasses, again these work out very cheap. Ther are 2 opticinas oppoiste the hotel. they do do an eye test but take your prescription with you if you've had a recent test.

All in all, a wonderful holiday, we want to go back next year. Finally, we upgraded to premium star class on the aircraft. If you can afford it would recommend this as it made the long flight much more comfortabel.

My husband & I have just returned from 2 weeks staying at the Uday Samudra Beach Resort in Kovalam. It was our first visit to Kerala as we usually go to Goa so we wasn't quite sure what to expect having read mixed reviews. Our first impression was good & overall the hotel accomodation & grounds are lovely. Having said that be warned as there is still building work going on in one of the apartment blocks. Whilst we were staying there we were woken at 8am every morning to the sound of drilling & banging! They are almost complete in adding a second lift, but there is still some way to go on the top floor of the block. All in all it was a lovley place to go - although we do prefer Goa - only because there is slightly more to do than Kerala. The beach outside the hotel is not really a beach & the sea is really rough. The best beach we found was the next one on, which is a short walk past the Hotel Samudra. There are several restaurants outside the Hotel which serve fanatastic food. If you miss English food then Molly's is the place to go - but you may need to book as it is a popular choice. The weather was fantastic whilst we were there - mid 30s during the day & no problems with mosquitos either. In our opinion it was just a bit too relaxing for us & we thought it was definitely for the older couple.

  • Liked — Rooms were lovely & staff very friendly
  • Disliked — The only thing we didnt like was the building noise!

What can I say about the week we spent at this hotel in Kovalam. A Credit to the staff and Thomas Cook for making our stay wonderful.

The hotel is currently being expanded because of its popularity. When we first got to our room it felt damp and I could see mold on the bathroom tiles, however once I reported this, the mold was gone and the dampness disappeared. What would one expect in a developing country. The air condition and fan and fridge and TV were excellent, a timely reminder of home, however we wanted a place to sleep and this was more than we expected. I would have rated this hotel 5 Star. The sheets and towels were changed every day and sometimes twice a day. There was no pressure to give tips as you will find that Kerala People are very proud people, which makes it an honour to tip them.

The hotel boasts three swimming pools and Gym and Ayurvedic Centre.

We had an Indian Massage at the center which was invigorating and costs only £12.00 each and lasts an Hour. This is what would expect from the Massage:-
You have to strip - Men/Woman You will be given a very small dothi to wear -don't be shy.
The beer is warm at this hotel, however speaking to other guests in other hotels this seems to be the common, however if you are planning on Sunbathing at one of the pools from 9am inform the pool bar staff that you want cold beers to day and they will place a case load in the freezer for you- Absolutely fantastic.

Being of Indian Origin Well actually born in Kenya, I love my curries, however the down side is that Kerala Curries are made with alot of spicies if you are not used to it. It does over power the taste sometimes and certainly I did not enjoy the curries. You must try and Peanut Masala my family were given these complimentary throughout our stay.

We did not go to the Thomas Cook introductory meet. I only picked up my brochure with departure papers and left candidly. the prices charged by the hotel and Thomas Cook are extortionate to say the least. We booked a Backwater River trip and a trip to Trivandrum the capital with a local taxi driver - We saved a whole load of cash by doing this. Take a camera - the Sunsets are beautiful.

Despite the food, the beer was good, the people are friendly and welcoming.

One thing I would say is that if things work at a slower pace than your used to then don't complain. Please respect the cultures of the people of Kerala. We had a guest on our flight who complained that his room was not ready within 5 mins of him getting there - he ended up shouting at the rep for no reason and I was not best pleased with his attitude. Its guests like that that make me sick and give a bad name to other Brits visiting this beautiful hotel.

  • Liked — Modern Comforts, Service and Cleanliness
  • Disliked — Warm Beer , but if you ask nicely the waiters will stasha case for you in the freezer

We are two norwegian girls who was travelling alone, but that was no problem in Kerala. The people were nice and helpful, and we felt safe.

The hotel, rooms and the hotelarea were clean and nice.
The staff were extreamly helpful and did what they could to make our stay unforgetable.
The guys that was cleaning our room was just amazing (look at the picture of our bed)!
It was allways clean and nicely maid.
When we had any problems there was allways a lot of people that wanted to help.
The Aqua Marine restaurant at the hotel had the best seafood! The staff there was fun, helpful and and allways smiling.
In the morning the fishermen were singing and pooling up their fishernets. But when they had finished, it was a good beach to spend our day there on a sunbed.

When you go to Kerala you should make time to go to an overnight stay at a housboat in Allepey. It was paradise!

We loved our stay in Kerala and at Uday Samundra. And would love to stay there again!

It was our first time in India, we wanted to try something new and not too touristy. Accommodation was good, not so the food, this may be because of the change in kitchen due to reorganisation, this may improve in due course once the kitchen is established close to the Grasshopper restaurant. I would recommend B&B basis at this time and eat outside, as so many excellent restaurants, with no ill effects. People so very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed a relaxing break, and met some very nice fellow travellers. This experience has been positive, and we are now keen to try Goa, we would go back to Kerala and this resort/accommodation.
