We had a friendly warm welcome on arrival. Stayed in the garden room where we could sit outside surrounded by coconut trees and the sound of birds. This was very relaxing. Hotel room was very clean and staff cleaned the room twice a day throughout our stay. The hotel part of the beach was wonderful. There was beach restaurant and I would highly recommend the coconut water. The sea was rough but you can easily paddle in this. Some people did swim. Throughout our stay we tried the three different restaurants. There was a good selection and food and service were excellent. We also took advantage of the free yoga class. There are plenty of day trips available at the hotel information desk. I recommend the evening back water trip and half day trip to neyyar wild life sanctuary. Take bananas along with you to feed the elephants. Finally I would like to particularly thank the catering staff for making our stay extra special.

This is probably the best hotel we've ever stayed in at this price. Amazing 5 star luxury at still an affordable price. Very exclusive and a beautiful property. No alchohol served in the Bait restaurant though. Food and beer also fairly priced(wines very expensive). Has a private beach to bathe and lounge in. Amazing infinity swimming pool.

We stayed at the Vivanta by Taj, Kovalam for 3 nights. Right from the time we stepped in , we were absolutely stress free and relaxed thanks to the excellent atmosphere, amenities and activities at the hotel.

* Check-in was smooth - lasted about 10 minutes.
* We were then shown to our rooms which were the superior sea facing rooms. The rooms were clean and well maintained. Had a beautiful view of both the pool and the beach.
* The bathroom was clean. However, the water was only warm and not hot at any point during our stay. This was a let down.
* Service in this hotel was good but can improve. Most staff were very friendly and cordial except for one or two who weren't. The room service and house keeping staff in particular were efficient and warm.
* The food in this hotel is good but can get boring after 2 days. They only have 3 restaurants, the third being a sea food restaurant on the beach which we didn't try as we were vegetarians. The service time at Curries (their Indian restaurant) was very slow.
* Activities in this hotel are aplenty. The pool was great. The spa was even better. And the beach was the best. We even used their tennis court which was good but poorly maintained.

The Leela vs The Taj -
We visited the Leela for a meal and found the hotel to be luxurious. Although I can't comment on the rooms in this hotel, the service and food wasn't great and it was absolutely jam packed and loud. Taj on the other hand was calm, serene and more intimate. My vote certainly goes to the Taj.

Overall - It was one of the most relaxing and stress free vacations. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone for a short trip. It's one big thumbs up from me!

We stayed 7 nights at the Taj. We were in a suite with extra beds added and it was roomy enough for a family of five. We had a small problem with our room and they happily moved us to a suite with the lap pool. It was very nice. Restaurant service was typically slow. The food manager, Soumitra, was very helpful and accommodating. His excellent customer service made the difference in our stay. The spa was excellent. I would recommend this hotel but perhaps for a 4 night maximum. There are only 3 restaurants (with limited timings) so we did grow tired of the food choices. Overall, we had a very nice time and enjoyed our stay!

This was the highlight of our trip after an exhausting tour and we had expected a great hotel. Instead we found dark, damp, poky rooms smelling musty so much so that they installed a dehumidifier...we then moved rooms but the problem was the same and the dehumidifier followed us. Considering this was Christmas and New Year (peak period), only one small swimming pool was in operation (the other we were told was being cleaned during our entire stay) so we were squashed round one pool which was overlooked by the restaurant with not enough beds or space. I have a feeling that the pool was no longer operational at all, it looked abandoned. The private beach (which is nice) also ran out of beds and towels on one day. The telephone system and air conditioning system in or room did not work and they had to be repaired. We went to Bait, the hotel's restaurant on the beach which had good reviews BUT BEWARE it is alcohol free and we were not able to enjoy a Kingfisher or even a glass of wine at the beach at all during our entire stay...what a tragedy and a missed opportunity for the hotel. I had expected great things from a Taj group hotel but we were so disappointed and would not return.....Jackie Morgan

This hotel isn’t a four star. Or even a three. I’d rate it two and a half stars. Here’s why.

It’s rare that you have hot water. So if you’re like me, and enjoy taking a hot shower, you’re out of luck. The A/C units in the rooms are contaminated with mold. We stayed two nights, in two different rooms. The second being a highly overpriced suite. Both had so much mold in the air that I got sick. The rooms are marginally clean. And quite dark and damp. You can’t open the windows, else the room is filled with mosquitoes. Signs on all the windows remind you of such. So within a short period of time of being in the room, or on the thickly forested property, you begin to feel claustrophobic. This feeling led us to explore areas outside the property grounds. Bad idea. As soon as you set foot off the property, you’re immediately inundated by local beggars. They beg you to ride their cabs. They beg you to visit their shops. Children in the local village and on the beaches beg you for money and food. Not exactly our idea of an enjoyable holiday.

Then there’s the matter of the service at the hotel restaurants. It’s horrible. The first night, we dined at the beach restaurant, and waited over an hour for our entrée’s to arrive. Then we were asked no less than 10-12 times, “How is your food?” One would think that after communicating this information 5 or 6 times would be enough. But why must this question be asked over and over and over again? On the second night, we dined at the poolside restaurant. We ordered drinks. My partner’s drink arrived after 10 minutes wait. My drink arrived after 30 minutes wait! So much for being able to have a toast. This time our food took almost an hour and a half to arrive. And when it did arrive, they had forgotten to include two of the items we had ordered. We couldn’t address the issue with our waiter, because midway through the elongated wait period, he simply disappeared. Never to be seen again. Rather than pressing the issue with another waiter, and perhaps waiting yet another hour and a half, we simply finished eating what they did bring, and called it a night.

Does all this sound like four star service and accommodations to you? I think not. We were scheduled for a 6 night stay. After 2 nights, we checked out early and headed home. I would avoid not only the hotel, but the entire area. The beaches are saturated with litter and filth. And the shops are highly uneventful.

The printer in the business center was malfunctioning. And there was not a staff member available to assist.

The only redeeming activity of our stay was the spa. It was sensational. But for us, this was a very long way to travel for just a spa. Once you look past the spa treatment, there’s not much left that would make a trip to this hotel desirable or worthy of the investment of time and money to get here.

Again, I’d put this place on my “avoid” list.

This was my second bad experience at a Taj hotel. Starting to see a trend.

We stayed at the resort (previously called Taj Green Cove) for three nights. The quality of food and service at the spa were excellent and worth the money. However there were a few glitches in our stay. We had a room specific issue - lots of flies in the room which room service could not fix. Secondly service was extremely slow and confused at both Bait and Curries - their two more upmarket restaurants. Staff even muddled up the serving order for starters and mains. This should be an easy fix and one that is needed in order for this resort to fly the Taj banner. I would probably try the Leela if I were to return to Kovalam. Reception / Travel services staff were were very helpful and courteous - full marks to them.
