“Luxurious and Must Stay Destination at Kovalam”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 6, 2009

The Taj Greencove Resort was a magnificent experience for us. The resort was so comfortable and relaxing that a majority of the 3 nights spent in Kovalam were spent within the resort premises.

The rooms were all cottages and were spacious, had a wooden floor, a balcony, an LCD 32 inch television, complimentary tea/coffee with a coffee maker, a minibar (chargeable), complimentary bottles of mineral water, a desk, couple of chairs within the room and in the balcony too along with stools/tables and best of all an equally spacious bathroom and toilet with all modern amenities like shower, dryer, bath tub, iron, luggage rack and ample space with spic and span cleanliness.

The resort boasted of a signature "Open Air Jaccuzzi" snuggled within greenery all around. They had a cold and a hot jaccuzzi side-by-side. One could ask the hotel spa staff to switch on the jets upto 7 pm in the evening and it was probably one of the best features that we found here.

The Infinity Pool was scenic and had the common dining area where breakfast (complimentary) and candle light dinners were arranged. This pool overlooked the Arabian Sea and appeared majestic with its own "elephant shaped outdoor shower" and snuggled among greenery and cottages.

The spa with complimentary usage of gymnasium and steam room (separate for ladies too) was a relaxing feature. The paid services included special Kerala massages and a Beauty Salon too. The massages are as expected too expensive (given the 5 * nature) of the resort but the same can be had by going to either Trivandrum or Kovalam. There is also a massage center called "Gopal's" which is at a walking distance from the resort though one has to take a circuitous route for reaching the same.

The resort sports its own mini golf course with putting facilities, archery area, a private lagoon with boating facilities, a well stocked bar with happy hours too and two very good restaurants. All these places were accessible using golf carts, which one could ask the reception to be sent to pick you up from where-ever you were on the resort campus.

The food was excellent to say the least. The best dish was "Ulli Theeyal" with Tomato rice. The choice and spread of breakfast and dinner buffet too was incredible.

The staff was very courteous and prompt in service. They would go out of the way to help the guests be it to arrange special dinner tables or arrange dinners or make your bed in such a way that it looks aesthetic.

Probably the only area which required improvement was the cost of stay. The per night charges are a bit steep and it might help if the charges were reduced by 25% - 30% or so.

The second area where they could improve is to provide free internet access or even 2 hours per day internet access. If the resort thinks that they can earn Rs. 200 - Rs. 500 extra by charging for internet, then I think they are laying to waste the great experience that they otherwise provide at the resort.

All-in-all, a very relaxing and thoroughly enjoyable stay at Taj Greencove Resort. We are planning to come back again some day to spend time in this resort.

Taj Green Cove

All the usual 5 star treatment at this hotel.

Rooms are sat on the hill in landscaped gardens looking out to the sea. Be warned that hotel complex is not beach side. You view from a distance but with great sunsets from your balcony with sea and palm trees framing it. Picture postcard stuff.

The private beach is some way away (reachable by beach buggy or 10 minute walk) And the sand itself only appears at certain times of the year due to the tide. There was no sand when I was there. So the hotel took advantage and are refurbishing the beachside bar/restaurant area. It’s a great location once developed.

You can walk along from here to the public beaches. The path takes you up to the other 5* hotel in the area. The Leela. Whose location is not as good as the Taj.

Rooms itself are well equipped with the modern take on Balinese style. Rooms are spacious with large bed and nice bathroom. Downside would be lack of soundproofing. Noisy neighbours (kids screaming or amorous couple) would bother you.

Staff are attentive throughout and chatty but not too overbearing. Majority spoke perfect English. Although there were the odd lapse in service. Had to ask for a couple of things more than once.

Restaurants. Well there is only really one (others go unused) by the infinity pool. Good menu with a wide selection on offer to suit everyone. Prices not bad for a 5* hotel. Restaurants outside are only slightly less to pay but none of the silver service.

Would recommend taking a taxi up to Lighthouse beach. A more popular beach and also a bigger selection of eating places. Fresh fish and seafood is on offer.

This whole area is authentic India. Ok. A sprinkling of Westerners but mostly the locals enjoying the facilities. Be it a dip in the ocean or eating in the restaurants.

Bad points.
This is a conference hotel so you get two extremes, some facilities are underused and so lack atmosphere. ie empty infinity pool but come breakfast time it is packed. Staff cope really well though. Could work in your favour if you time everything around when the conferences are on.

Also the other hotels nearby spoil the Taj tranquillity by playing loud music which reverberates round the area. Thankfully, India laws shut bars at 11pm so the noise subsides.

A good 5* Indian experience but unfortunately the Far East (Thailand/Malaysia) still beats them for the top experience.

Arriving at Kovalam, with no accomm booked we compared the Taj Green Cove with the Leela. We decided to check these out as tipped off they were really short of guests, both offered great rates, but we decided on the Taj, as it felt more intimate, and they threw in half board. The Leela like many hotels of its size and style felt a bit sterile, and the balcony in the club room was tiny.
We finally decided on a sea view room instead of the suite on offer, as the plunge pool and jacuzzi was right by our room and no-one else ever used it, thus saving ourselves another 220GBP, and there was never more than 8 people round the infinity pool all day!
Obviously service was excellent given number of guests, but I believe they would give you a good stay anyway and they were friendly, and attentive, but not overfacing. Jessica was outstanding among all the good staff.
Not all restaurants operating every night, but this meant we could eat off the al a carte menu, the curry was good, the tenderloin to die for, everything you could need for breakfast.
Liked the room, bed comfy, a/c everything worked, great sized bathroom inc bath, large balcony, perfect for watching sunsets over the sea.
Had a good massage though the coconut wrap was average - very pricey compared to others we'd had over holiday, but better than some cheap ones. (just spending some of our savings) hubby had exclusive use of the gym, and complimentary yoga sessions.
The beach facilities were all being refurbished, but as we just wanted to snooze and read by the pool not a problem for us, supposed to be finished by mid Nov so check this out, before you book, if its important to you.
Overall a great stay just what we needed, and at a perfect price!

Hotel has a great hilloc location but at the same time which means that you get a very confortable access to the sea beach. Food is good. rooms are great and staff is helpful to make you as comfortable as possible. Its connectivity is poor and a long distance from the airport.

I was the coordinator for a large group of 98 people on a spiritual tour and we stayed at this hotel for 4 nights. As you can imagine it is not easy hosting such a large group. The hotel did excellent.
Food: Very well prepared and delicious. Compared to the other places we ate in Kovalam this rated the best. Breakfast pool side is highly recommended. The view is excellent.
Accommodation: The rooms are clean and beautiful. They are located all over the property so it is a lovely walk through meandering pathways to get to your thatched-roof room.
Property: The pool is perfectly located with a great view, the lobby is big and charming, and in general the property is tucked away enough that it is quiet, peaceful and an ideal retreat.
Staff: We found to be very helpful. They accommodated all our large group needs with willingness.
I'd stay here again.

We stayed at the Taj for 8 days on a special deal with 4 nights for the price of 3 - brilliant value! This is a beautiful hotel set in spectacular grounds with wonderful views of the gardens. Our room was lovely, luxurious as you would expect from a 5* hotel, with fluffy towels, bathrobes and slippers and a powerful shower. The infinity pool was beautiful and looked out over the sea and the crashing waves of the Arabian sea which is pretty rough in the summer. You can't swim in the sea at all but the pool is lovely, cool and clean and very quiet in August - some days we were the only ones in swimming. The food in this hotel is superb. We ate lunch there everyday and there was plenty of choice, Indian and international. We never ate from the buffet but ate a la carte on three occasions in the evening and the food was among the best we have ever had in India. We asked to eat in the little gazebo by the pool which was supposed to be extra but we weren't charged anything more. The staff are lovely - friendly but not intrusive and happy to advise and chat if you want to do so. We would have liked to return there after our week in the Maldives and were disappointed they were full. We would definitely go back. Probably the loveliest hotel in Kovalam, much better than the leela and a bit more upmarket than the Uday Sumadra ( though we spent a happy 4 days there after the Maldives).
