Was here first time 32 years ago in 1981. Through the years I have visited Lighthouse Beach several times, latest in the middle of Febr. 2013.
In spite of the marked and clear change from a quite beach with few shacks to a very busy and commercialized spot that is a rage with tourists mainly from India, it is still a visit worth due to its beautiful setting and scenery with the light tower, the rocks, the fishermen in the morning, the many palms and the sunsets.
Lighthouse Beach is one of the most attractive beaches in South India and the most visited of the three beaches in Kovalam Resort witout any disturbing vehicles. It is small, a little dirty and with a sandy bottom. Be aware of the undercurrent even there are life guards on duty all day. Most of the day the beach was crowded except in the mornings.
I visited several sea facing hotels, small shops and restaurants on the promenade along the beach as well as restaurants and funky eateries in the area behind the beach and everywhere I enjoyed the food and the fascinating view of the sea. Compared to other places in Kerala and as expected, Kovalam was overpriced.
Only few restaurants had the license to sell beer and alcohol and that's why beer often is served in a tea pot.
Budget travellers can find cheaper hotel rooms and restaurants in the area behind the promenade.
It was a good place to swim, eat different kind of fresh fish curries, meet a mix of new people and relax in a pleasant atmosphere. However as also mentioned by others, Kovalam has been commercialized too much and has lost its natural charm. Due to the many western tourists, Kovalam is not real India but it is still an interesting place to chill out for a couple of days.
Many years ago I celebrated the New Year on the beach with fire and sea food in the cone of circulating light from the light house. Today the sources of light come from the many hotels, restaurants, shops and ayurvedic massage parlours which is quite diffe-rent, but wellknown from the development of many other attractive tourist spots.
