“Hotel is a no go!!!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 19, 2013

This is the first review of a hotel I'm writing. I have been in all kinds of hotels world wide from USA to Australia and in all categories. In 5$ models as well as in superb 5 star hotels. Never I felt the necessity to write a reveiw to warn people going into a hotel.

Whatever you read you have to keep in mind that this is a 5 start hotel and rooms are accordingly charged.

We have booked 3 Arabian Sea View Room. Upon arrival in all 3 rooms there was still the luggage of the previous guests. The rooms were not cleaned properly for months. There were cobwebs in every corner of the room, rooms were dusty and walls dirty. In my room the toilet was obviously used (I will avoid details here) but no cleaned. One of the three rooms was in such bad conditions, especially the bathroom that we have refused to stay in that one. Unfortunatelly all others were already sold out.
Staff came 3 times to clean the rooms half way so we accepted to stay in the hotel. Actually we had no other choice because all other hotels in Kovalam were sold out.

After a huge fight with the mainenance manager and front desk manager we got a 50% discount on food and drinks and after another fight 50% for one of the rooms. But by then our Kerala trip was completely spoiled and the discount did not help to enjoy the stay.
Even after having that much escalation, during our 3 days stay the shower was not cleaned a single time. All 3 days we got only one small towel and were forced to beg for another one.

The rooms did not provide a minimbar, 2 did not even a fridge, one had an empty one. I think this should be pretty much standard for a 5 star hotel.

Pool area is small and only very limited deckchairs are available mostly occupied by older european folks who keep chairs occupied empty for the entire day. Staff is supporting that by taking money to reserve chairs in the early morning.

This hotel should be called beach hotel. There is a small steep, slippy pathway going down to the beach nicely decorated with garbage which you can see from your sea view room.

The gym facilities are ridiculous. Its small and machines are probably some 20 years old. If you want to brake your neck on the treadmill, go ahead.

I really can't understand so much positive ratings for this hotel.

Dear Guest,

First and foremost, we thank you for choosing to stay with Turtle on the Beach, Kovalam during your recent trip. We value your patronage and appreciate for sharing your experience with us. We perused your entire review and are working towards nullifying all the detrimental issues related to the property.

We endeavor in offering our guests with utmost luxury and superior facilities. Our prompt and willing staff takes constant effort in offering a relaxing, comfortable stay. It is however, disappointing to know that our rooms did not reflect the actual benchmark set. We shall be extra cautious while maintaining the same.

Our pool area is the centre of gravity and usually attracts many guests for leisure purposes. We deeply regret to know that you had to face inconvenience because of the heavy rush. Currently, we are working towards enhancing the recreational area so that our guests have a wholesome experience. Also, we will keep a regular check on the maintenance of the pathway.

Your insight has helped us improve for betterment. We would deem it a privilege to serve you again with amended services.

Best Regards,
Karan Bakshi

We stayed at the hotel for two weeks in February 2013. It is a good standard of accomodation, large well kept rooms with good facilities. We had a sea view room which was in a block separate to the main hotel. The staff were very helpful, pleasnat and provided a good service each morning at breakfast.

The food at breakfast was fresh, with a good choice available. Extra choices could be requested and were provided. I woudl certainly consider staying at this hotel again.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms - 801-804

I finished escorting a group from Cochin to Kovalam and we ended our stay in Kovalam at The Turtle on the Beach. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the manager and the reception staff. They gave us a shell necklace and fresh wet towels along with a cold drink. The room I was assigned was spacious and overlooked the water. The property is lovely, well maintained with all the amenities including a fitness centre, yoga classes in the afternoon and a nice spa tucked in the corner towards the front.

The staff were really friendly and helpful. There was a buffet breakfast included with the room stay. The wait staff were great and would make me lattes when requested. They have an omelet station, muffins, croissants, fresh fruit, juices, toast and a variety of Kerla dishes. Now I never had an opportunity to eat dinner at the hotel but the breakfasts were great! The restaurant overlooks one of the pools. They have 3 pools or you can go for a swim in the sea. There is a path from the hotel leading down to the beach. I went swimming one morning and the water was so lovely and warm. I loved the location of the hotel as well. You come out the front turn right and go down to the seaside shops. They have great shopping. Lots of fresh seafood choices, vegetarian restaurants, spicy curries, a great Fusion restaurant, bags, shoes, beautiful Indian outfits.

All in all a fabulous hotel in an excellent location. I would book this hotel for my clients!

Dear Guest,

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. Turtle on the Beach is a boutique hotel with an artsy touch. We are one of the few hotels in Kovalam that can provide such as close to nature feeling with warmth of a home.

At Turtle on the Beach, our guest can relax in the pool or take a swim in the open sea close to the hotel or get spoiled in the lap of luxury. Our rooms are designed to make the guests feel pampered and at home. Most of rooms face either the sea or the garden; while our restaurants are facing pool area to give our guests a wholesome view of the nature. Also, we are inclined towards promoting the harmony between natural forces and inner self with our spa and yoga sessions conducted by trained therapists.

We thank you for your custom and feedback. We hope to welcome you again at our hotel.

Warm Regards,
Karan Bakshi

Although its a nice enough hotel, I would have expected a bit more for INR 10,000 a night ( GBP 120 ).

Everything is fine - the pool was great, the food is OK, the view from the room was excellent. However, all that really distinguished it from just any old hotel was the size of the room (although in a place like Kovalam, an enormous room is not really very essential!)
More importantly, there was something missing.........

The website (and the price) give the impression that it is a luxury hotel, but its missing all the little things that would make it a luxury hotel. I have stayed in many hotels in India, and most of them (not just luxury hotels) had little things such as flowers everywhere (and in the room), newspaper delivered every morning to the room, often fruit in the room and so on. This hotel was missing all of those things, and although the service was efficient enough there was nothing personal about it.

I had booked on the hotels own website, but on arrival I was asked for a voucher - they seemed rather put out that I did not have one!! I was also told I needed to pay a deposit (which turned out to be the full room charge for the whole stay) - despite having given my credit card details on the booking form as guarantee. I have never had to do that in any hotel anywhere!! My confirmation email said there would be a balcony of 219 sq ft, but the room we were given had a balcony less than half that size (with the sea view partially obstructed by the cracked glass roof of part of the lobby). I was told that they could not move me to a room with a bigger balcony without contacting their booking department which was somewhere else and was closed for the night!! The next day they did move us and both the room and the balcony were huge, and excellent.

As others have said, the walk down to the beach is a bit odd, but that didn't cause us a problem.
The bar does not exist, but that was not a problem - the hotel served beer quite happily!

Several reviews have mentioned the fact that they charge for wifi. To justify it by saying that it includes tax and that other places in Kovalam charge for it is ridiculous. The charge is small, but again when I am paying 10000 INR a night I really would expect the wifi to be free.

We are visiting Kovalam again next year, but will not be staying at the Turtle on the Beach.

Room Tip: 402 has a small balcony - 404 is much better :-)

I had a two night stay at the Hotel (Arabian Sea View), and had a very bad experience.

The room allotted to me had a split AC and was making noise like a generator, after repeatedly calling reception for 45 minutes, they asked me to wait as they have to repair the AC. I asked to change my room which was done but the room had spider webs and the AC again was making noise (but a lot less than the prethat).

The food was not up to the mark as a simple burger (costing Rs.324) was pathetic than a Rs.25 burger in Mc.Donald.

Positives:

Location and Staff.

I would suggest to check in TAJ or Leela if you are really up for a 5 star but not this.

Room Tip: Not worth Spending money

Dear Guest,

We thank you for taking the time out to sharing your concerns regarding your stay with us. We regret the condition of the room and the split AC. Since then these issues have been addressed and also checked in other rooms. We have also revisited our presentation and composition of the burgers and assure you that this was just an aberration in the otherwise carefully prepared dishes at the hotel.

Once again, we thank you for sharing your experience and look forward to welcoming you again at Turtle on The Beach.

Lying just som 100 meter from the beach and 500 meters from the seafront of Kovalam the location is very good. From the terrace and the pool you are overlooking the sea . In the evening you can have a romantic dinner with the stars above and hundreds of lights from lights on the small fisherboats in the horizon.
The hotel staff are very wellcoming and eager to make your stay perfect. The also have massage and a gymn. The room we got was spacious.

Room Tip: Try to have a room in the 2-3 upper floor with a seaview

We had an Arabian Sea View room ,which was very spacious and a large balcony. Don't book a room on the same level as the restaurant as they have open and not very private balconies.
Buffet lunches and dinners very good and a good variation from day to day. We were half board but often opted to take lunch and then have dinner at a restaurant by the beach, they were very happy to accommodate this.
When we were there they did not have an alcohol licence until the day before we left. In truth the bar area was not fantastic and we preferred the atmosphere by the beach in the evening.
The beach is a 5 minute walk down a hill ( recommend a Tut Tut back to the hotel for 100 rupees £ 1.25 ). Our favourite restaurant was Jeevan on Lighthouse Beach where the prawns are fantastic and the snapper great value at £ 4.50 and cooked to perfection. Try the cashew nuts with a pre dinner beer cooked with onion curry leaves and chilli

Room Tip: The higher the room the better And book an Arabian Sea view rather than a garden view
