“Excellent Hotel”
Reviewed January 14, 2013

Turtle on the beach is an excellent hotel. I made a tele booking of an Arabian Sea view room day before my arrival to kovalam and to my surprise no advance payment was asked during the time of tele booking and check-in unlike the hotel udaya samudra. The entire check-in procedure was smooth. The location of this hotel is sea facing but good passage to beach directly from hotel is missing you need to take a walk of five minutes in order to access beach.

The room was huge and clean with almost every possible facility a room can have, the balcony was spacious with a large table and chairs to enjoy your morning & evening tea. The bathroom was big with a good size bath tub. The view of the sea from the balcony of the room was very beautiful.

The quality of the food served at restaurant was good and reasonably priced; the breakfast buffet had many options and was good too. The service at the restaurant was excellent. Every staff of the hotel was courteous & helpful.

I am unable to recall the name of the staffs, Manager of the booking department, ladies at the reception and the waiter at the restaurant thank you for making my trip memorable and pleasant one.

Will definitely visit Turtle on the Beach again.

I am going to start this review by saying that the hotel is closer to a 4 star resort than a 5 star especially if comparing to other 5 star hotels in the area such as the Taj or the Leela so bare that in mind when booking!

We had booked 5 nights through last minute.com however when we arrived at the hotel we realised that the dates we had booked were actually incorrect - the staff were incredibly helpful at honouring the booking despite the mistake that had been made and considering it was christmas eve this was a huge relief. The hotel was fully booked yet they still managed to give us a room for the entire stay which was much appreciated.

The hotel itself was very nice and all of the staff members were extremely friendly. The hotel was in a decent location; the beach was roughly a 5 minute walk away however the main town of Kovalam was a short tuk tuk ride away.

Before we came to the hotel we noticed there was a lot of reviews complaining about the food - we actually thought the restaurant food was very good. A lot of complaints seem to be around variety but in my opinion that is what you get when you opt for a buffet - Every night there was a buffet option however we opted for the Al la carte which I think was reasonably priced and very tasty. For breakfast but they offered a big variety buffet breakfast that included traditional south indian cuisine (idli, dosa, etc), continental (eggs cooked to order etc), cereal, fresh fruit, and tea/coffee. Not sure what other people expected but I thought the breakfast wasn't too bad.

The hotel also had a pretty good mini gym which had a good range of free weights as well as cardio equipment. Overall considering the hotel rates are almost half compared to other 5 star resorts in the area the hotel is a good option.

Room Tip: The sea front rooms are a better choice than the garden facing!

Check in /out – good and fast and efficient.
Rooms – good, comfortable and fairly large – we had an Arabian Sea view room, with outside balcony. Comfortable, clean, roomy, though the bathroom is a tad small.

The one criticism I have is you need a darned PhD in electricity to work out how all the light switches work – very confusing ! And the shower/bath taps are just as bad to understand ! I should also mention that the shower/bath mixer leaked quite badly, partly flooding the bathroom floor, which was irritating.

Position – excellent views, but getting down to the beach is via a steep, somewhat treacherous, unpaved path – I seriously don’t recommend taking it in the dark ! And the path comes out onto the beach through what I can only describe as a small rubbish dump – not so pleasant !
Better to get to the beach using a tuk-tuk. Pay a visit to the fishing harbour at Vizinjham – its worth it.

Pool was good.

Food – buffet was fair to good, and the a la carte we didn’t try, though I did overhear some other guests complaining of the speed of service.

Be aware that you CANNOT GET ANY ALCOHOL here, and you have to resort to going up the road to a “hole-in-the wall” beer shop, and public drinking is frowned upon (illegal ?) in all of Kerala so you have to resort to “under the table” moves ! You get to feeling like a bit of a criminal or naughty schoolboy, having a beer !

Ayurvedic massage was excellent and very relaxing, and a specific massage I had to help with a sprained ankle was helpful.

All in all, we enjoyed our stay though, and I would recommend it.

Room Tip: Take an Arabian sea-view room

Dear Guest,

Many thanks for choosing to check-in with Turtle on the Beach and for posting your feedback. It is indeed a pleasure to note that you liked our Arabian Sea-view rooms and enjoyed the splendid sights. They are the most sought after accommodation options at our luxury beach resort in Kovalam. We are glad the swimming pool impressed you and the buffet was at par with your expectations. A beach resort in Kerala is incomplete without a host of specialized rejuvenation and relaxation facilities. At Turtle on the Beach, we have a dedicated centre for Ayurveda known as ‘Ayurveda Vaidyasala’ offering healing as well as relaxing treatments. We are pleased to know that you experienced our services here which aided in your sprained ankle as well.

We are investigating the concerns highlighted by you and assure you that corrective actions have been taken on all. We value your opinion and thank you for bringing it to our notice.

Once again, we thank you for choosing us. We look forward to serving you on your next trip with amended services and hospitality par excellence at Turtle on the Beach.

Best Regards,
Karan Bakshi

We had booked and prepaid (through Hotels.com) for two sea-view rooms (one with king bed and one with two twins) for two nights (Dec. 30 and 31, 2012). On the morning of December 30, I called to confirm two rooms, one with king bed and one with two twins, and advised them we would arrive close to midnight. The female receptionist confirmed that the rooms had already been assigned, and that one had a king bed and one had two twins. When we arrived just after midnight, first the male clerk could not open the rooms with a key-card. A replacement also did not work. So he gave us actual keys. Both rooms had a king bed. The rooms smelled strongly of cigarette smoke, as if a group of people had been smoking in the rooms shortly before our arrivals and the rooms had not been cleaned or aired out. When we reminded the clerk we had booked one room with a king bed and one with two twins, we were told the hotel did not have any sea-view rooms with twin beds, so we could not possibly have made such bookings. We showed him the printout of the confirmation from hotels.com. We asked him for clean rooms with the correct bed configuration. He then stated he could do nothing except provide a cot for one room, no other rooms were available, and the manager would have to handle the situation in the morning. He promised to have the manager contact us first thing in the morning. It was by now about 1 am, too late to find a room at another hotel. The cot provided was extremely uncomfortable.

The manager did not call on December 31. At 10 am I called and was told he was not available but would return my call. He did not. I went to the reception and was told he was busy. I demanded to see him right away. He came out. He then offered to change our rooms. The new rooms were clean, did not smell, and had the correct bed configuration. We asked him what he would do about the previous night. He stated he was remedying the situation by moving us. I told him that remedy applied to the second night’s stay, but that I should get a refund for the first night as the rooms we had to use did not have the correct bed assignments and were not clean. He stated he was the duty manager, and was not authorized to make such a decision. Only the general manager could do that. I asked to see the general manager. I was told he was not available, but would come and meet with me. The day passed and the general manager did not contact me. Towards the end of the day I asked to talk with him on the telephone, and was told he would be given a message. He did not call.

The rooms assigned to us for December 30, 2012 were neither clean nor with the correct bed configuration as booked.

The staff are lovely, but have not been well trained so are unable to offer the service you'd expect from a 5 star hotel, the service is woefully disorganised and slow. Not on the beach as the name suggests, thought it's only a 5 min stroll to the beach. Breakfast selection is pretty average and very samey, it's not varied from day to day.

A nice hotel, but if you are expecting amazing 5 star service and dining this is not the place for you.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for choosing Turtle on the Beach. We are pleased to know that you had a pleasant stay at our hotel. Turtle on the Beach is a resort situated, at a 5 minutes walking distance from the Eve’s beach. We strive to maintain the highest level of service complemented by state of the art amenities, testimony to which is the series of positive feedback that we have been receiving from our guests across public platforms.

We have noted that your pleasant experience was marred by lapse in service. We regret the inconvenience caused and would be re-educating the staff after a full investigation. However, we assure you that your experience with the staff is a rare instance in the property.
Once again, we express our disappointment for the discomfort caused. We look forward to a chance to serve you again at the property.

This hotel is in a great location and offers access onto Kovalam Beach with all of its restaraunts and bars. The rooms are spacious and you can hear the ocean at night. The breakfast was not that good, however the restaraunt serves very good food at other times. The swimming pool is a little small however you are close to the ocean. The only downside was the currency exchange which was the worst rate of our holiday. Staff are efficient and polite. Overall a good place to relax and unwind.

Room Tip: Avoid the rooms near the pool as at night the restaraunt serves food to tables right outside your ro...

I stayed in Turtle on the beach in February 2012 with my family and must say the stay experience was overwhelming... it started off with the front desk person informing us that our room was auto upgraded to the suite... The suite was really great with lots of space, it was a corner room so has 270 degree views of not just the Arabian sea but the entire property.. the property has a unique character with interesting sculptures all around the hotel.. The library and reading room was great place to hang out.. Gym was ok with all the equipment I needed and certainly more than some of the more fancier hotels have..
We were very hungry and they actually opened up lunch before the planned time.. however my son was not hungry and he threw a tantrum getting into the restaurant and would not let us eat. The restaurant staff immediately swung into action and took my son out for a stroll while we had our lunch in peace..
The breakfast buffet was absolutely delicious and the chef was especially accommodating to our requests. We celebrated our anniversary there and the hotel staff again made great arrangements for a poolside candlelight dinner... with the musical performance at the poolside the experience was unforgettable.
The beach is a 5 minutes walk, although its not a smooth passage, but we didn't mind it..
Overall - had a very nice experience as I was a bit worried with so many negative reviews, but I did not find anything negative about this hotel

Room Tip: go for the arabian view suites
