This hotel opened in the late 20' in what was then the British concession. The building is nice and the recent refurbishment preserved the historical character of this place. The old Otis lift installed in 1928 contributes to the charm of the place (don’t worry there is also a brand new one!).
The location in Heping district the central part of Tianjin is fine. Most of the customers are Chinese or Japanese. Very little Westerners. The staff is friendly but cannot speak English at all.
Being an old building, rooms are much larger than usual. They are equipped with air-conditioning, Internet, WIFI. Furniture and decoration are in the original Art Deco style of the 20’ and I found it relatively simple but elegant. Beds are clean and comfortable. Bathrooms are large too. Inside the hotel it is quiet. The price is very reasonable, which makes it a good choice if you can manage the contact with the Chinese speaking staff.
For breakfast, you may prefer something more “Western style” and go to a Starbucks of the neighborhood. There is one on Kaifeng road (开封道), at the crossing with Jianshe road (建设路) that opens at 7:30am on week days and 8:30am on week-ends. It takes 5 minutes to get there. There is another one on Tai’An road (泰安路).
The Astor hotel, also on North Liberation road (解放北路) and very close, opened in 1863 is actually the oldest hotel of Tianjin. On evenings, you might be interested in having a drink in the O’Hara’s bar of the Astor, more typical than the Japanese clubs around the First Hotel.
