I often take guests here. Rarely see more than a handful of other tourists, so it is quite and relaxed, and the mountains are beautiful, even in winter.

DO NOT eat at the restaurants, as they are merciless in their charges, which do not appear on the menu! Expect to pay about 3-4 times the regular price for meals; better yet, take a packed lunch.

The Great Wall is the thing that I want to see the most when visiting China. Whoever built this was a true genius! It’s all rock and rock but put together it became one of the most precious wonders of the world. I walked along the great wall for almost one hour, and the experience was amazing. You guys should not miss this place!

Took a car from my hotel in Tianjin up to the wall, which is about a 2.5 hour drive. It's very cold up there now, but because of that it was very a quite and peaceful experience walking up the wall and on the trails above the main section of the wall. Pretty fun, you can actually get good cell reception up there so I got to talk to my wife real quick from the Great Wall of China! A welcome break from the masses in the city! A great first experience on visiting the wall!

After walking up and back for about 2 hours I went to lunch at a little spot inside the parking area. The front of the shop said something along the lines of coffee and tea shop on the front of it. The girl who runs it seamed nice enough and I should have been paying more attention but after sitting down and being brought WAY too much food she brought me a the bill for 750 RMB! For 1 person! I didn't pay the whole amount but still got ripped off!!!

Lesson learned: always agree a price before placing the order.

Definitely go check out the Wall here if you have a day to spare in Tianjin, but I recommend packing a lunch! ;)

Happy Travels!

The great wall in Tianjin is approximately 2h by car from the city. There is a motorway most of the way and the last part is quite pleasant countryside/mountain roads.

If you come to China, you simply must visit the great wall!

The great wall in Tianjin is the best place to visit the wall if you want to see it all without tourists. I have been there twice and the first time we met 4 or 5 other persons and the second time we saw a few persons some hundred meters behind us. (But don't go here on a public holiday...)

Take one of the small shuttle buses from the parking up the mountain and then walk "down". It's a nice, albeit a bit tough, walk. Our friends' 4-year-old can walk it himself so it's not impossible it you're used to walking and climbing stairs. There are no parts that are very narrow and there are handrails where it's a bit steep.

The view is amazing and depending on when you go during the year , it's always different colour surrounding you.

Bring a picnic that you can enjoy in one of the watchtowers.
A trip here can be combined with visit to the Eastern Qing tombs in the afternoon.

I was very impressed with the great construction which wa sdone long back when there was no engineering development
I climbed the wall a little as it is difficult to climb more
The coffee was 35 yuan which is very expensive so dont take coffee and snacks there on the wall shops. Even T shirts etc are also very expensive
