I went to The teda branch of this restaurant.
we were a group of 20 so i booked two tables . upon arrival i easy told that minimum charge per table is 1000 rmb. we ended up having to order way too much food. dumplings were juicy and good alright , but somehow i feel cheated. i hate to see so much food wasted .

I arrive during the lunch time, and the waiters told me it was almost the time to close. It was only 1:15pm, and the sign says the restaurant close at 1:30pm. Can not believe but looks not polite. Finally I ate, but I was really fast .... :-)

This restaurant is located near the shopping hub of Xidan, a short stroll of 20-30mins from the subway station. The establishment itself is large and has a large imposing entrance. For a traditional dumpling place, I was expecting something more quaint and low key.

Like many places in China, getting a non smoking seat can take some effort, but in the end we were taken upstairs to a mezzanine like level which they reopened just for us. We ordered several dishes of dumplings, varying from vegetarian to pork options - mainly keeping with the simple and authentic ingredients. Not only were they cheap, but they tasted exceptional. They weren't of the exact preciseness you'd find at Din Tai Fung, but were more home style.

It is a little off the beaten track, but well worth the extra trouble, especially given that food in China can be hit and miss.

Given the limited time we had in Beijing we researched online and on Dianping.com to find the best place we could find dumplings and Bai Jian Yuan came up tops with the highest reviews from locals.

We took the subway here rather than trying to battle with taxi drivers (which seemed to fail everytime we tried to go to a restaurant despite having the name written in Chinese). Take the subway to Xidan station and walk south along Xuanwumen Nei Street for about 400m and turn right on Xinwenhua Street. Tianjin Baijiaoyuan is on the left hand side about 100 meters down the street. It is towards the end of the street and has a grand facade - hard to miss in a street full of small eateries.

The staff in the restaurant are quite surly and speak minimal English, we asked for a non-smoking table but were shown to a table smack bang in the smoking section. After waiting to get the staff's attention they reluctantly moved us to a non-smoking area. The restaurant has 229 different flavours of dumplings which blew our minds and we had trouble deciding which ones to get. They do offer other Chinese dishes but we were here for the dumplings of which costed around 10RMB per plate which is a bargain!

As usual thinking with our tummies we over ordered and ordered enough to feed a large family but it was worth it as the dumplings were fresh and tasty, and as delicious as all the reviews said. We ordered 6 different plates of dumplings - pork and chive, prawn, duck and shiitake, vegetarian and a few others I can't remember now.

Recommend heading here at lunch and then walking down the street to check out the malls which have Western Chains such as Zara and a large H&M. It is a little out of the way from other sights but worth visiting if you want some authentic dumplings at a very reasonable price.

If you want the real thing this is it! As many varieties of dumpling boiled / fried, meat, veg, fish, sweet etc etc. as you can eat and choose. Well worth the visit. Service is typical for this sort of restaurant so make sure you go with a Chinese speaker to maximise your enjoyment.
