“Pleasant place before Mt. Kenya”
Reviewed January 30, 2012

This is a small jewel before/after going to Mt. Kenya trek - we had a very pleasant, relaxed stay. Accomodation was very simple, but also clean and nothing left to desire (maybe a reading lamp beside the bed). Very nice location and garden with many birds and black and white colobus monkeys, and there is an hour walking trail - sorry I didn't have the time to see it.
Food is great, try anything they offer. Juices very good.
I am sorry we had only one night here, could have spent also more time. I would definitely return here.

Spent 4 days at the River Lodge. Things seems to have picked up..the staff are all very helpful and friendly - took up the cabin cottage Batian right by the river. Having been there before I would say the older cottages have a better fireplace system (less smoke more warmth) than the newer cottages. We did find the rooms musty but we had them clean it up and air it out. Linen was clean though. The fixtures are old but they work and when they dont a maintenance team respond very quickly...water is hot I like that they embrace solar heating and other green ways to keep things going...

We also picked the half board meal plan - the breakfast served was pretty good lots of fresh fruits and a good variety of breakfast things...I wasnt too hot with their pastries...but they were fresh.

Dinner would be buffet and I actually liked the food.

Never got round to swimming but the pool was clean and there is a sauna not sure if that costs extra.

We loved the gardens, an awesome place to take it easy - there is wireless at the main restaurant but not very strong signal all the time.

All in all its a wonderful getaway and we plan to make it a routine to go there - we liked Nelion cottage and are saving up to try it next time...maybe try some fishing too (we saw the sign)

Room Tip: If you dont want a cottage, we would recommend the superior rooms they have the best view of the riv...

I just returned from a weekend getaway to Naro Moru River Lodge with my husband. I stayed at the lodge in 2005, and nothing really has changed since then. The lodge is in dire need of repair and upgrades. The rooms are dull and poorly lit. The bathroom fixtures are tarnished with taps dripping and chipped tiles. We paid for full board deluxe accomodations, but I would say it was more like your standard room. The food is mediocre with little change in menu between lunch and dinner. In fact one lunch was made up of leftovers from previous nights dinner. Most services offered on-site come at an extra cost. You have to may to use the sauna, tennis courts, table tennis, and pool. These services should be included with the stay. The grounds are nicely kept, and the view of Mt. Kenya is priceless. With a some investment and TLC this hotel has the potential of a 3-4 star, but in its current condition it barely makes a 2 star.

We booked two separate stays for Naro Moru River Lodge, providing credit card for guaranteed reservation, confident in their 24 hour cancellation policy as with other standard hotels here in Kenya. We cancelled both reservations several days before check in only to find that they refused to refund any of the significant amount they charged our card, offering only a credit (which we will be unable to use.) We remain hopeful of a solution, but at this time cannot recommend this place due to this non-standard policy. We will update this advisor if the situation changes.

The hotel has very beautiful grounds. The rooms were especially wonderful. They were clean and linen could be changed everyday or after 3 days for a longer stay. Despite it being the cold season, the rooms were very warm.
The food was horrible. On one night the chicken was off, the food was just a bad experience. The decorations on the table looked like a sight out of the local markets. They need to work on that much much more.
The check out process was much longer. First they don't give cash refunds so we had to work out the difference among ourselves. They put the wrong amount in the wrong room and it took us more than 2 hours to check in. Much as most of us had paid earlier.
I would not advise anyone to go to that hotel till it ups its game.
It was a horrible experience

This hotel has a great setting with individual log cabins spread out along the river. These are real log cabins – confirmed by the gaps between the logs! The mosquito nets were therefore a welcome sight although there were in the event few insects to trouble us. The small team were efficient and friendly.
The pool is a short walk from the accommodation and the edges of the pool are a bit of a hazard so care is needed but that said is no worse than many we have seen in the developing world.
There are two restaurants: one providing snacks by the pool, which closes at six and the main restaurant, which has a nice atmosphere and better food. The main restaurant generally provides a good evening buffet but the hotel was quiet the first evening and dinner was a la carte and excellent. The only small annoyance was that on the second night we fell for the may I recommend a different wine sir trick and paid about three times what we expected; not a great deal of money to us but it cast a cloud over what otherwise was a great two days.
This hotel is a base camp for Mount Kenya, which looms nearby and also convenient for the Rhino Sanctuary within Sweetwater’s National Park and the Spinners &Weavers Cooperative that provides a livelihood for 130 plus women in Nanyuki and good value hand woven carpets for clients - This operation has to be seen to be believed from a health and safety viewpoint.
