Each time I visit Petersburg I make a beeline for Coastal Cold Storage, located on the village's main drag. Tasty cooked breakfast (try the Big Ole, pronounced ala the Norwegian"Olie") and lunch items are offered. Additionally a cold storage case stocks takeaway items such as shrimp spread and cold drinks for days spent on the water fishing or whale watching.
Locally canned salmon is also available for sale in six-packs at Coastal. If you can avoid the temptation to eat it all yourself, the excellent canned salmon makes nice gifts for people back home. (For the record, a large US Postal Service flat-rate box holds 36 cans of salmon if you wish to ship it home....this beats hauling it around in your suitcase!)
I always order fish from Coastal Cold Storage to take home with me on Alaska Airlines. Doug and the CCS staff are always polite to work with. They pack the fish so well it arrives frozen even when shipped during the heat of summer. For a taste treat bring some unbeatably flavorful wild Alaskan salmon home with you. Remember...."Friends Don't Let Friends Eat Farmed Salmon!"
