“BATES MOTEL - PART 2”
Reviewed June 23, 2012

We made the mistake of booking our reservation before we read the reviews. We never felt more uncomfortable then when we were at this place. They cater to the foreign tourists and the locals. People from Fairbanks are not welcome and they make it very clear. We were enjoying ourselves at the bar, as the owner and the bartender counted how many drinks we had throughout the evening. The locals and the foreign bus tour that was in the bar could drink all they wanted. When we asked for another drink we were 86'd and were not welcome in the bar anymore. Couldn't understand it, because we were staying at one of their cabins and weren't driving anywhere. It was a joke. If we had not been drinking we would of escaped the Bates Motel and gone straight home. There was no tv in the room. It was a very creepy atmosphere. We were both afraid to sleep that night. It sure wasn't worth the $160 we spent, plus what we spent in the bar. We were so glad to pull out of there first thing in the morning. Oh, by the way, no hot water in the rooms, so we couldn't even take a shower. TRAVELERS BEWARE!

Real Alaska run lodge with an amazing view out the dining room windows over Tangle Lake and the Alaska Range. They had a buffet going that was an amazing value for the price- featuring Halibut and roast beef that night. The rooms with private bath are really nice- very clean. The half bath rooms were a little too close to the generator (they have to make their own power) so we went for the private bath and were happy we did so.

I was one of 8 people on a tour that stayed at Tangle River Inn on the 28th August 2011 .When we arrived we all went canoeing and saw a bit of bird life on the clear still lake. The afternoon brought a mirror effect on the lake and great photos. The cabin that I had was very comfortable and clean and I quite liked the idea of curtains made from towels.I also liked the option of turning the heat off. The cabin was opposite the tents used by the mining people but was not a bother I knew the helicopter was in and out but I did not seem to notice it .
The source of power is the generator but I did not notice it. I had hot water and the lights worked although there was no central light just table lamps.
The evening meal although a bit expensive was a smorgasboard of a home cooked baked dinner complete with home made gravy and vegatables or as an alternative there was fish and a pasta dish. And of course salad.
Breakfast was just as good
If you want 5 star accomodation this is not for you but if you want rustic and charm you found it and look at the views this particular night I actually saw the Northern Lights an added bonus!

We booked based on their web site, got to this place and were disappointed. The place is noisy with a loud generator, the room is very basic and old, smelled bad, and was very unpleasant. We made the mistake of complaining. The owner's solution wad to ask us to leave the place... We did so willingly and was happy we'll never have to see this crappy place again.

Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to a better place. We ended up in Denali highway cabins, just 20 miles away, and highly recommend it!

I moved from Maine to alaska 20 years ago and the first lodge I came to was Tangle River Inn the view, people and experience alone is what made up mind to work and live here. It is a sad day when employees that cant handle it here, leave and have friends say bad things about the place and have never been here to begin with is sad. Yes we have a generator running 24 hours aday if we didnt our people would not have lights, running bath rooms, and heat when needed 24 hours aday, and good healthy food. all I can say if you dont experience it on your own dont say anything about us. Ok, This is Alaska people, and it's in a fairly remote setting. So don't complain about a generator. Be happy you have power. If you want 5 star accommodations, stay in Anchorage. It's a great little place. Their prices are all reasonable. Food at the restaurant is pretty good. Yes, there is a helipad there. Fortunately I slept through it, but my friend did not. It didn't start until 8 am. This is a great place to go to fish. We rented the canoe for the day and caught a lot of Grayling. Violet is great and accommodating. Will definitely be back.

Over priced food that tasted like McDonald's. Seemed like everyone on the staff smoked all day long and it drifted in to the dining area. Heard the old couple that own the place arguing loudly. I would drive down to mile marker 42 to the Maclaren River Lodge. Their place is quiet, friendly and sits next to the river. Well worth the the "extra" drive.
