“Very special night in a tent”
Reviewed July 15, 2013

There was no cabins available when I booked, so I opted for tent. It is right at river bank, so we had the music of the water for the whole night. It was very bright through out the night, since tent doesn't block all the lights, but eye patches were provided, so I had no problem sleeping. Hosts are very hospitable, we had a nice chat with them during breakfast, which is healthy and delicious. Mosquitoes could be a problem, but nothing could be done with that. And as Audie mentioned, it's far better than some other places I went in Alaska. I will definitely stay there again if I decide to drive through Denali Highway again!

Not sure if it was the beautiful cabin, the comfortable beds with warm Hudson blankets, the cool June night or the calming rush of the river, but we enjoyed a wonderful night's sleep here. Fortunately, we still woke up in time for a lovely morning hike to Swan Lake and to enjoy Audie and Jenny's delicious breakfast.

Highly recommended.

This at the junction of the Richardson H`way & the Denali H`way & ideal if intending to cut across to Denali using the Denali H`way. The Cabins are compact but adequate & well maintained being clean & tidy. Slightly eccentric water system but not a problem. The owners obviously take great pride with their site. The breakfast had fresh eggs from the on site chickens together with home baked breads etc. No onsite evening food but there was a caravan on the corner serving take- away Thai food which you could take back to the Family room to eat. No hesitation in recommending these cabins

Audie & Jenny were very hospitable and even waited till 10 PM to check us in. We were warned about water pump so we did not use flush after everyone went to sleep. I had a cabin with my two kids. Cabin was very clean and beds were comfortable. Breakfast was healthy and delicious. I would definitely stay there again if I am in that nook of woods.

Room Tip: Sorry no swimming pool but could not take off once I clicked that line.

Very disappointed in our stay. The location was gorgeous (but where in AK isn't?) and the cabin was very nice. We'd really looked forward to grilling our supper here - which their website touts - but when we asked about it they wanted to know why we thought they had food available to grill and tried to blame our travel agent. Nope - it was their own website. They also had information in the cabin that said the same thing. This place is off the beaten path so we ended up eating out of a trailer converted into a restaurant. If they would have been honest about that and not so rude this review would have been better. Too many great choices in AK to bother with this place.

All right, what is it that visitors in 2013 are not understanding? We ARE NOT and never have been a restaurant. Period.
Far more importantly, however, is that in our utterly minuscule settlement of less than a dozen people, we definitely try to reach out and assist others. So when an enterprising couple opened up what universally was quickly acknowledged as the very best food in over 100 miles, with enormous alacrity we abandoned our very burdensome effort to keep on hand foodstuffs so that our guests would not have to endure mediocre fare.
The result of these efforts, as this review demonstrates, is that some travellers have decided that their stay with us is not about our magnificent cabins, our unparalleled scenery, our utterly unique and unbeatable Great Room, Jenny's 100% fully homemade breakfast - but about the lack of a hamburger.
If we were to base our response as a function of the negative reviews this year has engendered, we would be best to move the operation, lock, stock and chickenyard, to mid-town Manhattan.

PROS: beautiful cabin decor, comfortable beds and Hudson blankets, not too close to the next cabin so privacy. Wonderful free continental breakfast--hand-made baked goods, in the owner's Great Room. Very interesting and friendly owners with two charming Malamutes and numerous happy chickens wandering about. Far from the crowd, a taste of the Alaska bush, great birding habitat nearby.
OTHER: Paxson is a nothing town--no gas, no groceries, no restaurants, no laundry. So bring what you need--especially gas, lunch and dinner. Not supposed to wear shoes in cabins, and not supposed to eat in cabins. No frig in cabins. Owner does offer certain services at Alaska bush prices, not cheap. Nearest town is Delta, 80 miles and 2 hours away.Nearest restaurant & gas is Tangle River Inn, 20 miles and 30 minutes away.

Thank you for the wonderful PRO comments!

The only question I have is the following. The reviewer writes in the PROS: "far from the crowd, a taste of the Alaska bush". Then in the CONS writes: "Paxson is a nothing town-- no gas, no groceries, etc"

So which do you prefer? True remoteness, far from civilization and immersed in the wilderness? Or staying in a town with all services?

Paxson is an interesting place and for those travelers who can slow down and open their eyes to something different, it's a memorable change from the overcrowded mainstream touristy alternatives.

Audie and Jenny have done a wonderful job of creating a comfortable, enjoyable retreat far away from towns and the conveniences that come with them. When you stay here leave your preconceived notions behind and get into the spirit of the place. It's almost entirely off the grid. We enjoyed experiencing what it's like to be self-reliant in this beautiful but harsh environment. We loved the sound of the river rushing by our cabin, the delicious breakfasts in the spacious common room, the comfortable beds, the simple joy of hiking right from our cabin up Denali Highway in the evenings. Some reviewers have complained about having to take their shoes off, or that the pump is constantly running. Well, as we learned during our two weeks in Alaska, taking your shoes off before entering living spaces is the norm (Alaska is a muddy, messy place!). And the pump only runs when you are running a shower or flushing the toilet. Denali Highway Cabins is not a Marriott hotel, or a bed and breakfast in a developed area. Embrace the change of pace and have fun!
