At one hour's drive from Anchorage, you can find total silence in Knik River Lodge. Combined with a spectacular view of the mountains, and hosts that make you immediately feel very welcome, this is a great place to start a trip through Alaska after a long intercontinental flight. Relax, enjoy the beauty, enjoy the wine and the really fine food in the restaurant, and let go of that jetlag... Peter and Evelyne, the hosts, are really nice and warm. They bring a nice, healthy breakfast in your cabin, at the time you request the nigt before. The beds are really comfortable, the bathroom is spacious, all very clean. A place to ga back to, that's for sure. And, oh, if you do go, please taste the brownies...you won't be able to stop eating them...

My family and I (2 children ages 7 and 10) stayed at the Knik River Lodge for 4 nights and had a fabulous time. Peter and his wife were great hosts and arranged a number of excursions for us (horseback riding, fishing, air boat ride to the glacier, 2 nearby hikes and river rafting). We ate a number of meals at the lodge and they were all excellent. Also, we felt the cabin was very comfortable and had incredible views. Finally, we saw a lot of wildlife around the lodge, such as moose everyday. I would highly recommend the Knik River Lodge to anybody from couples to families,

After disembarking off the Carnival Spirit cruise ship in Whittier on May 20, we got on a mini-bus and enjoyed the beautiful scenic drive along Turn Again Arm. After an hour and half, we arrived at the Anchorage Airport where we rented a car and then drove an hour north to the Wasilla area to Knik River Lodge. It's perfect for a couple who need to compromise between camping and a bed and breakfast!

The drive took us 20 miles off the main highway. As you drove along the Knik River towards the mountains you felt like you were "getting away". Keep your eye open for an occasional moose! There are hiking trails in the area for the "camper at heart". And
I think any camper would give up sleeping on the ground to stay in this adorable cabin with a modern bathroom, microwave and a tv to watch movies on. (You borrow a movie from Peter's DVD library. He's the owner.) My husband's favorite part was sitting on the cabin's front deck and soaking in the beautiful mountains directly ahead of us.

If the camper in you is craving a tent, look no farther than the big white tent filled with picnic tables. It's covered in case of rain, and the cook is only too willing to please you with high quality entrees. We had salmon and leg of lamb for dinner. The meals all do cost extra. But if you're the b and b kind of person, you'll be happy to get a hot, complete meal that high up in the mountains!

The next morning is the surprise! They bring breakfast to you on the front deck of your cabin---better than the usual bed and breakfast style of eating with strangers!

The cool part of the environment there right now is that the sun set at 1:00 a.m and returned at 3:30 a.m., but we had no trouble sleeping with the blinds shut on the cabin windows.

Only drawbacks---In May it did get cold at night, so plan on using the extra sleeping blanket and room heaters in the cabin. If the sulpher smell of the natural mountain water bothers you, drink the bottled water, tea or coffee.

The next moring we drove another 2 1/2 hours to Talkeetna to take a flight excursion up over Denali National Park with K2 Aviation. We were happy with them, too. The prices in Talkeetna are cheaper than if you take a flight excursion directly from Anchorage. And with driving up to Talkeetna, we got to experience driving through some of Alaska.

We stayed at Knik River Lodge for the last 2 nights of our 15 day trip in Alaska. What a wonderful way to cap a fabulous trip! The owners were very gracious and accommodating-it was as if they had invited you to their home, and offered you your own little place to stay. Each cabin was very cute, with a little front porch and chairs to sit on;it had knotty pine paneling on the walls, and wood flooring, a king size bed, plus ample space for our luggage. The bathroom was also very nice, and there was a small kitchen area with a coffee maker, microwave and refrigerator. The little appointments were very special-there were dishes, glasses and silverware for use on the counter-the dishes were china-the silverware was real, not plastic! Before we turned in for the night, we let the staff know what time we wanted breakfast delivered to our cabin!!! There were not many activities which we participated in, but there was an airboat ride to see Knik River Glacier, which was available. Evelynn, the hostess, also offered to set us up with horseback riding, but we chose to take it easy on these last 2 days-we had been seeing and doing things almost every day. The scenery was also very beautiful all around, and it was a really great way to end our trip to Alaska.

  • Liked — The welcoming atmosphere, the personal touch in each cabin, the view
  • Disliked — Can't think of a thing

My wife and I and our two teenage daughters stayed for one night at the Knik River Lodge. Wow we should have stayed much longer. Peter and his wife are excellent hosts. This place at then end of a dead end road has the best views we saw of native Alaska, The Knik river is right below the lodge and on both sides are towering mountains. It was the quietest place we stayed at. At night you can imagine you are back in the 1800's with the lack of any road traffic etc. Just eagles flying overhead, an occassional moose or porcupine. The lodge is gorgeous brand new and perfect. The morning continental breakfast should be relabeled as a continental feast as the fresh cooked muffins, fruit etc. were awesome. We grilled a salmon with Peters assistance and ate it while taking in the awesome scenery. You won't get this in Denali or anywhere else in Alaska we went to truely great amenities, lodging in a unique setting.
