We stayed here for a day and I have to say I loved the view and the hike to the mine above it.
The lodge has a rustic ski look to it and the girl behind the desk and kitchen was very nice to say the least. We were there when NO ONE else was and stayed in cabin #5 which was a dry cabin but had a sink and chemical toilet. It's a little rough living for most but they furnished water in a jug which help. The view of the mountains was spectacular and I couldn't get enough of them from my cabin double large window. We brought food and didn't use the lodge for eats, I slept well and can't complain. It was May, so off season for skiing and the price was right.
Don't let the old guy(handyman, jack of all trades) who lives above the lodge scare ya off. He's a little different and right to the point when it comes to questions but is helpful when he wants to be.

We did not get the opportunity to stay here so I can't speak to the lodging. However, we did get to eat at the lodge restaurant. Granted it is rustic but the food was good and the views are awesome. The wine cheese fondue was excellent. I usually make and have it with beer but next time I'll make it with wine and try to copy their recipe. We also had the smoked halibut sandwich, first time I have had smoked halibut. This was very good too.

I have to say, don't let the terrible reviews stop you from staying here. If you are looking for skiing, sledding, hiking, etc, right out of the front door of your cabin, then this is the place for you! As previous posts have mentioned, this is a rustic, wilderness lodge. The lodge itself is quaint. When I am here, I expect things to be a bit 'slower'. (aka, island time) The prices are very similar to those in Anchorage. If you want a place to kick back and relax after your days activities, then this is the place for you. The views are beyond incredible.

First, before reading too much into the other reviews rating Hatcher Pass Lodge as 'terrible' or 'poor', one needs to keep in mind that Hatcher Pass Lodge is a lodge located in an Alaskan mountain pass, running off of generators, and it's meant to be rustic. You don't come to this place looking for the most pristine, luxurious of settings. It's meant to be a place to get away from it all and enjoy the majesty that envelops the area. There may be a bit of dust in the cabin, the linens are a bit dated, and no the furniture doesn't match, but Hatcher Pass Lodge is the perfect place to stay if you're looking for a fun, rustic setting to enjoy a weekend of hiking or skiing.

We just returned from two nights at the Lodge where we stayed in a cabin with one bed in the upstairs loft. We intended to spend the weekend cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and just relaxing without the bother of phones and internet. We greatly enjoyed skiing up to the mine and snowshoeing around the lodge area. Once the sun set, it was an almost other worldy experience as the only folks around are those staying at the lodge. It's deathly quiet, and the wind blows the snow into beautiful drifts around the cabins. We welcomed the opportunity to enjoy an early dinner with hot buttered rum and then return to our cabin to read and relax. We loved that the lodge was so dog-friendly. We were able to bring our dog with us each morning for coffee and each evening for dinner. It was great not having to trade off in the room or worry about her being left alone. She was always welcome, and this was a major advantage! We also liked that that loft cabin gave us the opportunity to put our son to bed in his pack and play and then spend several hours upstairs reading and playing cards.

We were also pleasantly surprised by the food offerings at the lodge. We found that the food was homey and comforting with features like corn chowder, fresh baked bread, and awesome cheese fondue. Yes, the food is a bit pricey, but that's to be expected at a location so far off the grid. You have to remember everything has to be trucked up by the staff as no delivery services visit the lodge. Also, keep in mind that the staff on hand is limited. Often, the chef is taking your order prior to making your meal and serving it to you. Be patient and enjoy the amazing scenery around you. No need to be in a hurry up here!

All of the staff we interacted with really, truly seemed to enjoy their job, and they were always willing to stop for a chat.

We truly enjoyed our stay at Hatcher Pass Lodge, and we look forward to visiting again with our family in the future!

A few things to note for your stay:
While we didn't use it, the sauna looked awesome! Be sure to ask at the front desk if you're interested. It's located just down the hill from the lodge near the stream.
The main lodge stays open until 11:00pm or so where guests have full access to flushing toilets and a shower. Coffee, water, and tea are also available while the main lodge is open.
The cabins do not have running water, but each cabin is equipped with a jug of fresh mountain spring water and a chemical toilet. We didn't find the toilet bad to use at all.

Okay just got back from a second stay, my opinion is not swayed but strengthened. First the setting is proof of god. Second and more importantly what many reviewers don't seem to get, this is a wilderness lodge!! This is not the hotel it is a no frills rustic lodge that, has had little done to it over the years and that is the charm. On our last visit, we had two familes with guest for a total of 13 people to a person we all loved our stay and the food and felt it was to short. The staff was AMAZING, I can not say enough good things about them. You have to undersatnd how this place works, they are so easy going with kids and pets, yes you can bring your dog right into the lodge they don't mind. There is a a coal fired wood stove right in the middle of the lodge, a huge window looks down the valley, there are skiing and climbing paraphnelia hanging on the walls.
Imagine a full day of sledding and skiing and coming back to a excellent hot meal with a hot drink iand playing games with your family and friends; then going to your cabin for more laughter. That is what we had. This place is so flexible they even let us bring in our own beer and wine and suppled us with an opener, where else can you do that! My grad school daughter says we should make this a tradtion, I agree.

Room Tip: Get a hot alcolholic drink like the HBR or Cocoa and schnapps.

From the moment you enter their premises, it feels like a dream! We spent 2 days here and still cant believe how beautiful the location was. One can hear a nearby river and spend time exploring the pass or just enjoying a nice book in your cabin/ the lodge itself. The staff was very helpful and friendly and we absolutely loved our stay here! The food was good and everything was very nice and clean.

This place is amazing. The cabins are really cool. We stayed in a cabin with a queen bed in the loft. Every cabin has an awesome view of the mountains. The bathroom is very basic, but it really didn't matter. The isolation is nice, but the drive to town isn't long if needed. We only stayed one night on a whim, but worth it, wish we could have stayed another night. Trip Advisor only has a rating of 5 as the max...i would give it a 6. Love it, next trip to Alaska we will definitely stay here again. The restaurant has great food.

Room Tip: We stayed in a cabin with a loft...it does have a ladder.
