“Just fine for a one-night stay”
Reviewed September 12, 2011

If you read the other reviews of Trail Lake Lodge you'll know what to expect. This isn't a Marriott, it's a small and simple lodge. Our room included a queen size bed, a sofa bed and a twin bed. The sink and vanity are outside the bathroom and the shower/toilet in its own small space. Everything was clean and sanitary. The room itself was a bit noisy but mostly when other guests were walking by or leaving in the morning (yes, at 5 am). The TV gets four channels and none of the content is appropriate for kids (just an FYI for you, not a complaint). The service at check-in was welcoming and friendly and the breakfast we had in the morning was good. So while the accommodations may look a bit dated and its not the quietest place you can stay, for one night, the Trail Lake Lodge was just fine for our family.

Ok, so you're in Moose Pass Alaska and you need somewhere to stay... your choices would be the Trail Lake Lodge and... yup, the Trail Lake Lodge! So, that being the case, I guess they can afford to charge you an arm and a leg for a less than stellar motel room! If we had paid $50-60 for the room, we'd be writing a glowing review... but for $109... hard to encourage you to spend your cash here!
That being said, the folks were friendly, and the food & atmosphere at the restaurant/bar were great, so it's not all bad.
But in Alaska, where everything costs a fortune and cancellation policies are iron-clad, I would not recommend staying here - stay the night in Seward (also pricey, but at least a town) or push up to Girdwood, and just grab a bite here on the road.

We were in the area for a family vacation and stayed here for five nights. We could not ask for a better time. The room was clean and had a great view of the lake. The staff especially Doug were beyond accommodating. They were cheerful, friendly, funny and attentive. We ate in the lodge for almost one meal a day (breakfast, lunch or dinner) and found the food fresh and tasty. We loved how the whole atmosphere made you relax and switch into a less hectic pace. Kids liked to walk around the grounds and to sit on the back porch and watch the float planes take off and land. Best location around for exploring Seward, Copper's Landing, etc. Great hikes and, of course, fishing. We'd love to come back! Doug's a great guide too.Thank you Doug and everyone!

Room Tip: We stayed in the lodge rooms.

Stayed here as part of a group. It's not bad, because we were busy doing other things. It's true that the tv only gets 3 channels, but in spite of the rain, we were not there for the tv. Generally the management and restaurant people were ok, but really a bit of a lackadaisical attitude; not really sure if they knew what the concept of "customer service" is all about. The area is beautiful, however, and the food supplied to our group in the "pavillion" was ok to good. The room was small, but certainly serviceable, and clean.

Room Tip: Good luck.

My son and I had talked about a trip to Alaska for several years and we were finally able to coordinate our schedules this May. We wanted a place from which we could explore the Kenai Peninsula at a reasonable cost. Trail Lake Lodge fit the requirement well. It is centrally located and easy access Seward, Cooper Landing and a reasonable drive to Homer. The room cost was about half of hotels in Anchorage and the scenery around the lodge was outstanding. The room was clean and comfortable with simple décor appropriate for the rustic setting. It was early in the fishing season; however the general manager Doug was went out of his way to make inquiries about local fishing conditions which resulted in a successful day of salmon fishing. The staff was very knowledgeable and helpful in answering our questions and recommending activities. My only disappointment is they were still serving from their winter menu which did not have the larger selection of their summer menu.

This hotel is ok. Nothing horrible about it, but nothing great. We stayed in the lodge so were were right above the restaurant. Unfortunately, the bar is open late so we heard people until the early hours of the morning. Also, there was a smoking area right outside our door so we heard people out there until quite late. We also couldn't open any windows because the smoke would come in. Despite these things, we still slept ok. The room slept the 3 of us comfortably and was clean enough (a little old). It was a little more spacious than rooms in hotels like this normally are. We ate dinner in the restaurant and the food was very good. We also felt like the amount of food we got for our money was a good deal and the staff were nice. This wasn't my favorite place I stayed in Alaska but it was ok for a one night stop over.

I stopped at the Lodge by accident on my first trip to Seward. All I wanted was a quick breakfast and coffee. Chef Wayne's breakfast creations were the rival of the best of New Orleans. I came back that evening for dinner on my return to Anchorage. Dinner was so delightful we decided to spend the night. I returned the following weekend with friends, and have not stopped raving about it. The owner, Steamer Fulton, the staff and Chef Wayne and wife Debbie made us feel very comfortable. The place is the shiniest gem on Peninsula full of shining gems.
