We stayed four nights at the Cape Fox lodge, nesteled in the hills above Ketchikan, easy tram down to the "Creek Steet" historic district and easy walk into town, minutes from the Totem Heritage Center, a must see, and the Fish Hatchery. We followed the signs from the lodge, and walked over a bridge where the salmon were spawning in vast numbers below us. We also rented a car while in Ketchikan, highly recommended, and drove to the Pioneer Park and did the rain forest hike there, beautiful, and an easy hike. We bought the "Misty Fjords" flight and I would highly recommend this--flying above the fjords was one of the most incredible sights I have seen anywhere...we landed on a lake, walked out on a rock platform.Back to the lodge--it is rustic in some of the rooms, water can accumulate on the windows incessantly and is clearly a challenge for maintenance. I did not mind, the bath room was very clean and the bedroom as well. Room was equipped with fridge and microwave. Eating in Ketchikan, I highly recommend the lodge restaurant. I was cautious given some of the other reviews, and we ate at several other restaurants in town, but dinner was more predictable at the Lodge, the food was good, go with the specials. At the other restaurants (Fish Pirate, Annabelles) our food was mediocre and the charge was just about as high as the Lodge.Having a car was very nice, cheaper than buying the tours to see bears, and totem parks, and could do all on our own timetable. Recommend: Bight Totem Park, nice variety of totems, Saxman park and bear viewing off the road at Herring Cove. We had a wonderful vacation in Ketchikan! Final note on the lodge: Great service in the coffee cafe and restaurant, service at the front desk was great during the day, more uneven in the evening.

We chose this lodge in Ketchikan to be close but not too close to the downtown action. After arriving at 5:30am we caught a cab to the hotel ($11). At a more civilized hour the city bus ($1, get off at Creek Street) or the hotel van would have been better transportation options. They let us in our room because it was not occupied, something we appreciated and needed after such an early start. Loved the northwest native artifacts onsite and the woodsy feeling up on the ridge.

Did not love the too-firm beds and the spotty wi-fi coverage in the buildings. One day it worked in the lobby, the next in the bar, another time on the second level, and once or twice in the room. Our view was mostly obscured by the fogged window (between the panes). Cape Fox could easily get a higher rating if they attended to the little things like these. Don't shower with the door open even a crack, as you will set off the smoke detectors. One thing I would tell the lodge is to clear out the alders growing on the city side of the complex--they are quickly growing into the view that we paid a premium for and there is plenty of other vegetation to preserve the forested effect.

A funicular (free for guests) takes people from the lodge to Creek Street below, or you can walk up and down on a trail and stairs to town. Cape Fox Lodge is in a great position to walk to almost everything from tours to trails. With thousands of people disembarking cruise ships each day, I was happy to be a bit above the downtown streets. We departed in the afternoon and were able to take advantage of the complimentary Cape Fox van.

Room Tip: From downtown looking up at the lodge it appeared that the highest levels of the 400 building might...

I took my family to lunch at the restaurant and needless to say I was very disappointed.
The lunch prices were unbelievably HIGH. The fresh veggies were dirty and the service was slow. If you plan on staying here I would suggest you find another place to eat. The Pioneer
Pantry a good place.

We flew to Ketchikan for a few days site seeing unlike most tourists who seem to come on or off the cruise boats. This hotel is located on a small hill above the town and is accessed by gondola or walking trail. It is ideally located being very short walk to town but being up a hill gets you away from the 1000's of people who arrive daily on the cruise boats. The rooms are large, clean and most seem to have a view. The hotel runs a free shuttle to and from the airport ferry. It is a non smoking hotel so we were very surprised to see that smoking was allowed in the bar and part of the restaurant. The restaurant had an extensive menu and the quality of food was very good. The staff were very knowledgable and helpful in suggesting places to go things to do and other venues to eat at.
Having visited some of the others this is definitely the best hotel for location, and quality. Whilst a little more expensive than other hotels we felt it was certainly worth it.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the upper floors overlooking the harbour and the town.

We rode the incline up and ate here during our vacation. My husband got the 2 piece fish and chips and I got the 4 piece one (shared with our son). The fish and chips were very good. The server surprised our son with a balloon with a face on it tied to a package of cookies. This was lunch and we wore jeans and fit right in. We had a very nice table with a view of our cruise ship below. After lunch, we went around behind the lodge and walked down the Married Man's Trail. That was very enjoyable also. The only thing I could see that would have been nice was there was a computer station next to the restroom. I'm sure it was for hotel guests. I jumped on it to try to send a quick "we're fine" email to home. But it had a log on for guests only. I suppose we could have asked for a log on.

We recently stayed here on a business trip and were quite disappointed. Unfortunately my family that ate at the restaurant believe we got food poisoning from an undercooked hamburger. While we reported this to the manager and were more than willing to review the situation we found that the staff while sympathetic, did not address our concerns. We were extremely frustrated at their unwillingness to address these issues. We requested our meal comped several times (it was not) nor did they attempt to make any accommodations to review the situation or put our concerns at ease. The floor manager seemed unable to make any accommodations and the manager, though informed, made no attempt to contact us. We found it unbelievable that so many levels of hotel staff were unable to address this or take any responsibility. We would most definitely not stay here again and recommend staff take a course on customer relations.
