This is a small independent company, family owned, not shown on any cruise ship listing. But they are on the web site for Ketchikan. There is a very good reason for this, no crowds, very personal service. Open to all levels, but could be better suited for beginner to experience level kayaker. But they do have patience and experience to teach so no worry. What a thrill to paddle through the creek with salmon jumping on both sides of the kayak. The islands where just magnificent and seeing that Bald Eagle nest with the young ones in it was just the highlight of the day. And by the way the wife did feel that Seal bumping the Kayak, but being the good sport that she is, did not freak out. If ever we do go back on another Alaska cruise and are still able to , we certainly will be booking again with this company. So if you are tired of the crowds and kayaking is your sport, you must try this company.
Based on other reviews, we chose the Orcas Cove trip, and loved it. There's a 10 minute or so boat ride to get there, but we heard lots of great stories about the area on the way there and back, and the scenery is gorgeous, so that was part of the fun. We had had 5 days of sun, so knew we were pushing our luck with the weather, and sure enough, most of our kayaking was done in the rain, some of it pretty heavy. Didn't matter: we still saw great scenery (and the rain sometimes enhanced that), a few kingfishers, some harbor seals, and some bald eagles; and were rewarded for our rainy tour with a rainbow. Our guide was charming, interesting, and knowledgeable. The excellent smoked salmon and crackers, plus hot chocolate, at the end, was a surprising treat. The equipment is high end, evidence of how seriously they take this and how passionate they are about what they do. So, wear layers and a hat with a brim, use their water-proof jackets and pants, plus any water-proof items you may have, and enjoy whatever comes your way. This is a terrific way to spend time in Ketchikan.
