“Great opportunity!”
Reviewed June 13, 2014

Several people had informed us before leaving on our trip that the scheduled excursions in Ketchikan didn't spend nearly enough time at the locations so we were better off trying something on our own. While perusing the excursion options while on board our Holland America cruise ship, I noticed the option to hire a Hummer for a personal 4-hour tour for $599 per vehicle (for up to 5 people). Four of us were interested in going together, so this made the cost only $150 per person, which is somewhat in line with the other excursions we signed up for at the other ports. With this option, you simply filled out a form and selected some local highlights that you want to explore, and the guide builds the tour around those preferences. Our main preference had been to view the totem poles in the area, so he took us to the Totem Heritage Center, the Potlatch Totem Park, and Totem Bight State Historical Park. We were able to spend as long as we wanted at each location, and we even had time to view some local wildlife and sample our guides' personally caught and locally canned smoked salmon. This was an excellent opportunity for anyone wanting a more focused experience. Thanks!

Hey there Jon and thanks for your Review! First of all let me just say wow! Your review is extreamly detailed and really breaks down how the Hummer tour is such a great deal! A small personal tour that really fits a family size of 2-5 that allows you to really personalize and really experience everything about Ketchikan the best way. I’m really glad you got to see so many sights and really enjoy Ketchikan for the fullest. From all of us here at AkHummer thanks and keep enjoying Alaska! (PS: sorry it took so long to respond to your review) :)

“Do Your Own Thing in Style”
Reviewed June 10, 2014

We booked through Holland America, and, though expensive, for 4 people it was about average.
We had a 4 hour tour of what we wanted to see: The Totems, and enough time left to see some of both Ketchikan and its wildlife. Our guide was both friendly and knowledgeable. And he let us sample some of his self caught, locally canned salmon! Very tasty. A great afternoon.

“Best way to see Ketchikan”
Reviewed November 4, 2013

I booked this tour through Royal Caribbean as excursion ID KE40 for a party of 4 adults. The tour cost $560 for up to 5 people. The price is a little more than other excursions, but I figured it was going to be worth it since we had our own dedicated tour guide. On board the ship, we filled out a preference sheet (which is the same one found on their website) the day before the tour. The guide uses the preference sheet to route the tour - you are always in control though - if you want to skip something or stop part of it short, just tell the guide.

Hunter met us at the pier and was very personable. He had an extra foot stool to help granny get in and out of the hummer. Granny also had a wheelchair which had no problem fitting in the back.

Hunter had a story for everything (as you would expect from a good tour guide). We saw plenty of bald eagles - (binoculars are available to use during the tour). We tried to find some bear, but never did. We saw some water falls, drove through the city, and went to a totem park (I also reviewed). Our guide was able to share many stories behind the totems in the park which helps us understand the meaning.

At the end, we stopped by our guide's favorite local coffee shop and he dropped us off in the shopping district at our request equipping us with directions to get back to our ship.

The tour was 4 hours - we did everything on our preference sheet and were never bored. This was well worth the extra cost for a group of 4 adults who want a personalized tour.

Hey there Jeff M and thank you for your review! Sorry it took so long for us to get back to you but back when you posted this review tripadvisor was kind of a new thing to us and some things fell through the cracks. It sounds like you guys had a blast on your Trip though “bald eagles, totem poles, the waterfall and other local highlights”. It’s a bummer that you guys did not see bears, we try to find them every time but being wild animals they sometimes are pretty reclusive. Anyways, from all of us here at AkHummer thanks!
