Several people had informed us before leaving on our trip that the scheduled excursions in Ketchikan didn't spend nearly enough time at the locations so we were better off trying something on our own. While perusing the excursion options while on board our Holland America cruise ship, I noticed the option to hire a Hummer for a personal 4-hour tour for $599 per vehicle (for up to 5 people). Four of us were interested in going together, so this made the cost only $150 per person, which is somewhat in line with the other excursions we signed up for at the other ports. With this option, you simply filled out a form and selected some local highlights that you want to explore, and the guide builds the tour around those preferences. Our main preference had been to view the totem poles in the area, so he took us to the Totem Heritage Center, the Potlatch Totem Park, and Totem Bight State Historical Park. We were able to spend as long as we wanted at each location, and we even had time to view some local wildlife and sample our guides' personally caught and locally canned smoked salmon. This was an excellent opportunity for anyone wanting a more focused experience. Thanks!
