Owner description: Explore the pristine waterways of Alaska's Inside Passage on a small ship with Alaska Coastal Quest. On a trip with us you will experience an Alaska not seen by those aboard larger vessels. Our purpose built, small ship, the "Misty Fjord" will get you up-close to the beauty of Alaska's wilderness and its amazing wildlife.

If you want to give yourself a very special treat, go on an Alaska cruise on the Misty Fjord with Captain Dale and his amazing crew. They made every effort to make this a trip of a lifetime for us. It started well beforehand, with questionnaires about dietary needs and wishes, a reading list with a wide range of topics related to Alaska and a packing list. Once on board, we were made to feel welcome everywhere except the crew's private quarters and the kitchen, the cook's realm. It's a good thing being in the fresh air gives you an appetite: the food was delicious and plentiful, and included fresh fish of course, but also cakes baked on board from scratch. The crew were all happy to talk to us about their experiences and all they knew about Alaska and other topics (an awful lot!), while at the same time being protective of our privacy as guests (we had to "invite" them to join us at the dinner table (on shelves around which Captain Dale's extensive Alaska library is housed). The cabins were compact, but comfortable, each with a private shower and toilet. There was an itinerary, but it was not set in stone, and so we got to watch whales for as long as we wanted, and spent an unplanned second night in Baranof Bay because it was so gorgeous there, and foggy further out. The boat was not huge, but because we could be in the sitting room, the wheel house, out on deck or in our cabin, it was possible to have time alone, as well as together. And there were opportunities to go kayaking, hiking, fishing, exploring, and relaxing in hot springs, in addition to visiting a native village and seeing lots of wildlife. If you are looking for an all-inclusive trip "away from it all", this is it.

Why go on a large cruise ship with 2000 other people when you can cruise on a 65 foot boat with 9 others and an incredibly attentive crew, who's goal is to make your trip an amazing experience! We had the most wonderful time imaginable on the Misty Fjord with Captain Dale and his delightful crew!! Unlike the large ships, everything is included, no hidden fees. Dale will take the boat to where the wildlife is and stay there to watch and photograph it. No jostling for the quick glance as you pass by, but lots of time to watch and take in all the grandeur of the area and the animals!

The boat is lovely, comfortable and where else could you spend lots of time in the wheelhouse talking with the captains and learning from them about the area, wildlife, the seas, fishing and all that's involved in piloting a boat. The food was wonderful and when we caught fish, we had them cooked perfectly as part of a meal. Our trip out of Petersburg was calm, with glassy smooth water much of the time. Never touched the Dramamine. We saw many Humpback Whales, Orcas, Seals, Sea Lions including a rookery, Sea Otters, jelly fish, Bald Eagles, Grizzly Bears, Black Bear, spawning salmon, and numerous other birds! It's the trip of a life time and I highly recommend taking it with Captain Dale and the Misty Fjord!

There is absolutely nothing bad I can possibly say about my time on the Misty Fjord. The crew were fantastic: friendly, courteous, helpful, funny, and the things we saw were absolutely spectacular! Even after seeing whales a few times, we were able to stop and watch more when they continued to be closer. When we docked at Baranof Bay and the day on the island dawned bright and clear with a wall of fog at the mouth of the bay, we were able to stay and explore the island because everybody (crew included) agreed that a day in that gorgeous place beat going somewhere else in 1/4mile visibility just to say we did.
The food was wonderful, and always prepared with a joke and a smile, and while under way, we all spent a fair amount of time in the Wheelhouse, talking with and learning from Dale and RK. We had brought books and games to do in our down time, but we didn't hardly have any and we certainly were never bored watching the various islands go by.
Because the Misty Fjord is a small boat, you get to know the crew as well as all the passengers, get to stop and even go out of your way for whales if that's what you want, and get to go right up close to a glacier where the giant cruise ships aren't allowed. If a small, personalised trip is something you're looking for, you're looking at the right place. Everything is included in the up front payment-excursions, drinks, food-except the tip.
A list of animals we saw (there is no guarantee of seeing any, but Dale and RK will do their best to find them if that's what you want): brown bear, orca, sea lions, seals, otters, eagles, salmon, jelly fish, humpback whales, gulls, terns, and trout

We had an awesome experience on the Misty Fjord. The food was excellent, the crew very friendly. The captain was always ready to idle the boat while we took pictures or move the boat until the light was right.

Stops were informative and fun.

The rooms were comfortable, if small. Overall it was the experience of a lifetime. Exceeded all our expectations.

Southeast Alaska is a labyrinth of channels, bays and islands. Travel by road is out of the question. Most travelers arrive in Ketchikan on a large cruise ship and may take a float plane excursion to Misty Fjords National Monument. But to really experience this wild place you need several days, a small ship and an experienced Captain. Dale Pihlman and his M/V Misty Fjord provided that to our group of photographers. Dale's years of varied experience allowed him to share special bear viewing areas, hard to see petroglyphs, and whales, lots of whales.
The M/V Misty Fjord is a labor of love for Dale. He took it from bare hull to a very well appointed expedition ship. The staterooms are small but functional. Each has its own bathroom. There is a dining area and a salon for relaxing after a hard day of whale watching. The food is great. Our chef, Greg, turned out some unbelievable meals in the small gallery.
Dale believes in being flexible. He can take you to where your interest lead; providing pleasant surprises along the way. Our interests were photography and Dale, who is a formally trained artist, knew what we wanted--spectacular scenery and wildlife, especially bears and whales. And he delivered!
