Chuck Slagle and Baranof Fishing Excursions run a world class outfit.

Our family, from an 8 yr old girl, to hard-core adult male fishermen, to Grandpa, were seen after magnificently. We were picked up at the airport, ferried to the hotel, and transported to the Alaska Fish House (same family's restaurant) for a custom cooked dinner, including Ivory Salmon. I had never heard of it either. Wow. We met Chuck and planned our excursions. The next day, our guide, Brian Linville, took care of our family wonderfully, and he's a hell of a fisherman. The boat was a brand new, covered Raider, four stroke Honda 225, and they don't mind burning fuel, running farther to find fish. Their foul weather gear is top quality, clean, and well maintained. We had brand new Ugly Stick rods, and super reliable Penn reels. Monofilament for the soft mouth salmon, and high tech braid for the tough halibut.

It took Brian all of five minutes after the down riggers were set to get us on an electric bite of Silver Salmon. We landed fish constantly, including a couple of doubles and a triple. We trolled until we were tired and then ate a delicious lunch and switched to jigging for halibut. After some fantastic fights (20-50lb fish) and a full fish locker, including lingcod and rockfish in addition to the silvers and halibut, we headed back to town where the Fish House chefs - Heidi and a different Brian, cooked a portion of our fish for us as part of an amazing three course meal, and sent the rest for processing and freezing to take home. The chefs are happy to share recipes and cooking techniques, and we learned as much at the comfortable fire side table (with an epic view) as we did on the boat.

More of the same the next day, except the little girls are fans of the "Deadliest Catch" so Chuck and Brian arranged for us to drop some brand new crab pots and add an amazing Dungeness crab boil to our final night's dinner. Oh, and the one little girl who tried her best, but just doesn't like seafood, was treated to a juicy burger one night and a steak the next. That's world class custom service. They even made her a custom lunch instead of the delicious salmon salad sandwiches the rest of us inhaled.

Kayleigh Slagle is a friendly, smart, efficient coordinator, and made special accommodations for the younger and older in our group, and set up outside tours as well - the Misty Fjords via float plane is indescribably breathtaking.

This is a family run business that treats you like you're part of it. Their professionalism is top notch, the fishing and cooking expertise second to none, and the experience "en totale," couldn't have been better.

One final thought: Baranof fishing excursions is not the cheapest guide service on the planet. If you want cheap, go to WalMart, not Alaska. Think about how few and how precious your vacation days are, how often you honestly think you'll have an opportunity to do something like this, then contact Baranof and have the trip of a lifetime. Our family, our amazing meals, friendly guides and chefs (whom we are now proud to call friends), and the 120 lbs of fish filets (not whole fish, 120 lbs of edible filets) in our freezer, will testify that it's worth every penny and then some. If you want a trip you'll never forget, Baranof Excursions is your huckleberry. Five stars.

Spent the week of 6/24 - 7/1 in Ketchikan to attend my daughters wedding to a local " guy ". My daughter arranged a fishing trip through Kayleigh for me and my son/ her brother. Did not know what to expect as we were first timers. Was told to bring layers....well Baranof provided rubber foul weather gear from head to toe..so layers were a bit much. Got there at 7:00 AM and Captain Jim got us signed up, licensed and dressed up. It was just the three of us in this 6 seat skiff. Well we went from one fishing hole to the next...got some bites and finally I caught a halibut...probably 5-10 lbs. and a snapper 2-3 lb. My son, Paul, was being skunked....so instead of breaking for lunch we continued to fish and finally he caught a 8-10 lb snapper. Then we headed back. Enjoyable experience and would recommend Baranof for future trips.

How lucky were we to stumble onto Baranof--mark this as your top tour in Alaska! We chartered a private, covered boat with a guide from Baranof Fishing for three hours of fishing for our family of 5--parents and three kids in their 20's. William, our guide, picked us up at our cruise ship and got us on the water within a half hour. We caught a king, a halibut and four other salmon with tons of hits as well. William was knowledgeable and professional, but best of all, he was so much fun! He got as excited as we were when we caught something. Hands down, our morning fishing with William was the best part of our 8-day cruise to Alaska. When we were heading back in, we saw whales and he cruised by for an up close whale watching tour. Baranof's owner, Chuck, runs a great, fast-casual restaurant called Alaska Fish House where they cooked some of our freshly caught fish for lunch. How awesome is that! Definitely would go there for a quick gourmet meal while overlooking the fishing boats when they come in. We'll be back!

WOW
William our guide not only knew how to fish he also knew exactly where the fish were. Three of us left on the Baranof Fishing boat about 11:00 a.m., and were back at the docks by 2:30 p.m. after limiting out with 18 (BIG) Silver Salmon and 1 King Salmon. Thanks for the GREAT EXPERIENCE!!!!

This is by far the most amazing excursion we've done-and we've been to Alaska twice, so we've done a number of them! My family of four had a great time with our guide Chris. He made sure everyone (including my two boys) caught a few rockfish. He was a fun and knowledgeable guide. We also caught a gorgeous coho salmon-which was also very tasty.
The true highlight is the absolutely amazing beach cookout-a once in a lifetime setting with a huge roaring campfire and an amazing lunch-especially since it was fish we caught just an hour before! There is nothing quite like fish cooked outside in the wild and the preparation the Baranof chefs did was out of this world.
I highly recommend this trip!
