Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: Lighthouse, Totems, and Eagles Excursion is a 3-hour expedition (dock-to-dock). Our dock representative or van driver greets the passengers as they get off of their ship and guides them to their transportation. After a short, narrated bus or van ride out to our rustic Ward Cove location, guests board one of our 45 passenger vessels (either the M/V Totem Princess or the M/V Lighthouse Endeavor) to embark on an interactive, educational, and entertaining voyage to Guard Island Lighthouse and back. Notable locations along the tour route include the historic site of the Ward Cove Pulp Mill, Ward Cove Packing Company, Refuge Cove and its outlying islands, Totem Bight State Park, Guard Island Lighthouse, and Vallenar Rocks Wildlife Viewing area. Our primary wildlife viewing is eagles and their nests, but sightings also include seals, sea lions, blue heron and other seabirds, and even humpback and orca whales. We follow a circuitous route, which ensures there is no redundancy in scenery.

It's such a beautiful area, and we definitely saw eagles and eagle nests. There is always a good chance it will rain so we were happy for the dry areas on the boat, but there are also open areas that are good for taking photos. I could have skipped the prerecorded parts of the tour since I'd rather listen to something more spontaneous, but our captain definitely knew a lot about the area and kept it interesting. We were glad we took this excursion.

So we leave our cruise ship in Ketchikan on a rainy day and thankful that we are going to be on an enclosed boat...

We take a bus into a small marina that is a complete dump. Honestly Sanford and Son would nt step foot into this marina.

When we get on the boat it is evident that the owner has a huge need to update the inside and clean both the inside and outside. It smelled horrible and several of the seats were broken.

Once we set out it is evident that the captain loves his own voice. How much you ask? Most of what you hear is a recording of him and he adds in his own additional commentary.

Lets review some of what he talked about:

He talked about how he eats a high fiber diet and he goes to the bathroom everyday. He then asked how long we take to defecate. He then proceeded to go past dozens of homes and talk about each and every resident. He talked about one widow and likes to stand naked in her window. He the. Went by his doctor's house and informs us, again, that due to his high fiber diet and daily defecation he hasn't seen his doctor in years.

If that wasn't enough, he continued to add in constant comments with little sexual innuendos. As we were on the boat with our children, you could say it was innappropriate. Almost everyone in the lower cabin either rolled their eyes or talked about the innappropriateness of his incessant rambling.

Yes, the sights were nice, but it was ruined by an outdated, dirty boat and a captain that I can't explain any other way than he was really weird and totally hung up on his regular colon.

The kid working in the cabin rolled his eyes and said that everyone loves his humor.

Do the math of the number of guests on the boat and the number of trips each day during the season. He is making a ton of money providing a sub standard tour with a box of crackers, some sliced cheese and a can of salmon dip and powdered hot chocolate. His innappropriate rambling and filthy boat just confirms that this tour is overrated.

Yes he has many good reviews but trust me - after you take this tour you will be greatly disappointed!

It is always fascinating to hear some of the bad reports on the very same tour as you hear good reports on. Rarely do you hear a complaint from someone who says they brought these complaints to the attention of the captain or crew and they did absolutely nothing to correct a situation. On the other had we feel every complaint MUST have SOME basis of fact so we do read them and take them seriously as a means of improving our excursion each and every day out. That is probably why we have earned the C.R.U.I.S.E. Award "Tour Guide of the Year" every year for 10 years in a row. This guest is definitely one of those people you just half to ask, "What would have made them happy?"

This past month I heard from several guests and some of their comments you may find interesting. Ella W. said, “The captain and crew were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. We saw many eagle + nest. The crew took our pictures, helped me with my camera and provided delicious food snacks. The homemade salmon did was out of this world delicious. The captain and crew were very child centered allowing anyone to steer the boat as they took their picture. Betty G. said, “We were a party of 9 - ranging in age 12 to 74- We all enjoyed seeing everything, especially the Eagles! Out tour guide provided Binoculars and snacks and drinks and wonderful history of the area. He spotted the eagles and nests so easily! And another guest wrote, “The Capt. was fantastic!! Honestly, he provided us with an absolutely amazing tour. He is an extremely knowledgeable guide with mountains of history he is capable of sharing in a delightful manner. He appropriately points out important landmarks and has stories to go along with them. He knows where all the eagles are and encourages his riders to look for them & get photos. He is the best! So glad we were on his boat ! ! Terrific Tour ! ! So maybe our efforts to improve are paying off. Please come and join us for a tour that delivers beyond your expectations where you can have your pictures taken in front of the Totem Park AND in front of the Guard Island Lighthouse.

The boat tour on 8/10/13 was wonderful. The weather was great and lots of opportunities were present to view or take photos of bald eagles, totems, harbor seals, and the lighthouse. Captain Rob was very knowledgable about the areas to see, as well as the local history. The entire crew was polite and made us feel welcome, including snacks and the recipe for the salmon spread. This was a great tour to take.
