Owner description: The Totem Heritage Center was established in 1976 to house and preserve endangered 19th century totem poles retrieved from uninhabited Tlingit and Haida village sites near Ketchikan and to preserve and promote Native artistic and cultural traditions through traditional classes. The Center is home to 33 authentic poles, numerous historic images, and Native art works. Educational and interpretive tours are available.

We visited the Totem Heritage Center right after we left Saxman Native Village. Saxman was disappointing so we almost didn't visit the center but that would have been a mistake. The Heritage Center has some very old, very neat totems to view and gives so much more background on totems, why they are carved, types of totems, etc. We really enjoyed our time here.

The insight that this gave us for all the totems we would eventually see on our SE Alaska trip (Ketchikan was our first stop) was so helpful. How great that they have worked to preserve these works that were on the verge on decaying into the forest floor. Also a great place to escape from the hordes of cruise ship passengers, very few of whom seemed to want to walk up the hill to this center. Their loss!

We had limited time in Ketchikan because of the tours we were doing but considering we were in Alaska we had to stop here. Kind of wish we didn't. Did enjoy the walk to the center. The history and really old totem poles were very interesting to see but it was so small we finished in 10 minutes.

another great opportunity to see and learn about the Alaskan Culture as is pertains to the Totem. Many very old totems have been salvaged and preserved for visitor enjoyment.
