This is privately and family owned, there are totems, stories, scenery and lots to see - but there is also a very special gift shop and a couple small "museums" of sorts. We were in a group of 6 and some were happy to see the complimentary coffee and clean restrooms. It's a no brainer when you are on the way to or coming back from Totem Bight. Bring your camera, take some pictures and step back in time.

This small but intriguing park offers a glimpse of native culture that has been all but lost. Way back when, when the Christians came to "cleanse the heathens", they mistakenly saw totem poles as religious objects, and had them all burned. They couldn't have been more wrong. Totem poles are records of history, or lore. Nothing at all religious about them.
The Christians, in their misguided wisdom, destroyed eons of history of these legendary peoples (and also tried to obliterate their native languages). Visiting this beautiful, enigmatic park is at once profound and very sad. The effort to re-establish totem poles is alive and well.
A worthy trip.

Since you know by the name that you are going to look at Totem Poles, this place does not disappoint. It's a gentle uphill walk from the highway heading south out of Ketchikan. The Poles are colorful, each tells a story as the Indians didn't have a written language (we are told) and expressed both positive and negative feelings with these poles.

The totem park is almost hidden behind a trading post/souvenir shop just of the main highway. If had not been for a local resident we would never have know about it. This is the working location of those who are working so diligently at retaining he totem pole and cultural heritage of the native area clans. There are many totem poles in the park to view and several in the process of being created.

Even though the walk was uphill, lol, it was worth it! The park was beautiful and the totem poles were wonderful. For some reason I felt I needed to see as many as possible and very glad I did. It closed right after we got there so we didn't see much. If I ever get back I know to go earlier
