The duck boat tour in Ketchikan was wonderful. Our tour guide was Anthony and the captain was Ken. The informational talk that they provide as they tour you around the town and then out into the bay should not be missed. You get to learn about the area and in the bay you see a side of the town you would not otherwise. We were fortunate to have sunshine!!! while we were there which they tell us is rare.

Our craft had Capt Don and Kassi. They were both pretty funny. I did end up buying a duck caller for my dad because they go camping a lot and thought it would be a funny gift. Saw several bald eagles and got up close and personal with the docks. The fishing boat even hammed it up for us showing off their red snapper catch. Only drawback was the windows were kinda cloudy so we had to stand up to see out of the holes. I found out some information about Ketchikan that I didn't know so that was fun. Oh and yes Kassi, we returned to Alaska because we think it's beautiful up there! No we were not lying to ya ;) lol

Six of us took the Duck tour from our Norwegian Star cruise. These "ducks" are purpose built machines that seat about 60 people and are not the WW2 amphibious vehicles that are sometimes adapted to this use. You do climb a staircase / ladder to board because the vehcile is about 6 ft off the ground when on land. Once aboard there is a (Coast Guard) licensed captain / driver and a narrator. The sides have plastic windows with circular holes cut in them for ventilation and the top is clear plastic. If you are an avid photographer sit in the last seats which have open sides (no windows). The downside of the those seats are the engine / prop noise and on our duck the speaker system in the back was barely audible.

They give you a drive through town so you will cover quite a bit of the area and the north end of the town where the boat ramp is utilized to go in the water. You cannot get off the duck once you are on, but they do drive slowly and make a few stops for pictures. The water portion is through a marina and then south to the docks where fishing boats deliver their catch, then out into the channel where the sea planes are taking off and landing, down the channel to the ramp area and then back onto land.

The ducks are equipped with "quackers" on the overhead roof panels, which you can also purchase. In the event of depressurization of the duck, these fall down and you blow into them very hard. The loud quacking sound resulting from 60 people blowing in them will quickly re-pressurize the duck... at least that is the information we were provided by the narrator. They also have lap blankets on each seat if the weather is cold. It is well worth the fee to get a excellent overview of the town and the trip into the water is a one of a kind experience.
