Owner description: This tour is also known as "Deadliest Catch Crab Fishermen's Tour". You can come aboard the "Aleutian Ballad" crabbing vessel as seen on season 2 of the Discovery Channel's "Deadliest Catch". Depart Ketchikan Alaska for a 3 hour trip to catch king crab, snow crab, octopus, fish, prawns and more. This tour also features some of the best eagle viewing on the planet. Share the allure and adventure that draw fishermen to the sea. Fishing legends that have worked the Bering Sea are your guides, some you may have seen on TV. The vessel has been retrofitted for guests comfort and fun, with a "live" tank on deck to allow for closer viewing of the wondrous creatures brought on board. Guests stay warm, dry and comfortable while we sail calm and protected waters. This is the REAL ALASKA and you won't want to miss it! Age limit for this tour is 5 years old due to maritime regulations.

While the excursion was not quite what I expected (not as daring or dangerous), it ended up being more than awesome! Learned so much about crab fishing. The eagles were simply amazing. Super clean and modern facilities. Staff were friendly and outstanding. We loved it.

Highlights: the best up and close eagle experience; holding a giant crab; hearing firsthand experiences from genuine Bering sea crab fishermen; seeing how the equipment on a crab boat works. The crew are generous and frank with their personal stories- the danger the experienced is genuine. Wonderful and different- yes, the crab pots were full- we took the afternoon tour so they'd probably been there from the morning tour but there's nothing fake about this experience. Had many wonderful experiences in Alaska over our 12 day cruise tour- this came at the end of thr trip and was unanimously voted the best experience by our party of 4. Our teenage traveler wants to do it again!

My husband and I really enjoyed this excursion. The fishermen/guides were genuine and excited to be sharing their stories, experience and knowledge with the audience. The ship was a crabbing vessel that had been retrofitted for tours. The stadium seating was comfortable and offered a good view of all that was happening. They pulled up crab pots for us so we could see how it was done and gave us time to come down and experience the crabs first hand and gain more knowledge about their life cycles and such. They took some frozen fish and also fed nearby eagles which was really neat. I have only seen eagles hanging out in the trees so it was nice to see them actually swooping down to pluck the fish out of the water. Overall it was a fun trip with good information and fantastic guides!

Thank you Derek, Terry and Travis for a great experience! Yes, we knew it was staged, but it was done in such a way that that most people don't care. The guys are very entertaining and do everything with such exuberance. They make every effort to make sure everyone who wants to can touch and hold the starfish and crabs. After they tell us their tales of their time at sea there is a Q & A session that allows anyone to ask questions about the industry and life on a fishing vessel. The stop to feed and see the eagles is amazing.

Informative demonstration of a day in the life of a crab fisherman but nothing more than a show. Felt like a commercialized photo opp with crabs. Great eagle watching though.

As we boarded the boat, we were assigned seats in their stadium theater that resembled an informercial layout. At times, their demonstration was entertaining but it was nothing more than a show. At each of the five crabbing stops, they pull up cages with a variety of crabs and shrimp but as they put the crab and shrimp (and possibly food for them?...) back in the cages before they throw them back in the water, you get the distinct impression they have pet crabs trapped in each cage just hanging out waiting until the next tour group to come by. In that sense, it comes across as staged and disingenuous.

The highlight for us was the eagle watching -- the boat crew took us by what seemed to be an eagle habitat where at least 25 bald eagles soared above the water and trees. A large nest was there which was fascinating to observe. The fisherman threw in about 100 dead frozen fish which the eagles flew down and swept up from the water's surface. This was really fun to see. However, like the crab show it started to feel like a feeding zoo with pellet food thrown to the animals...

The main guide Danny does his job well. He gives a lot of insight to the dangerous, intense, hard-working life of a fisherman. Despite a flawed format, Danny shines through as a legitimate instructor.

Just know what you're buying here and set your expectations accordingly. For us, it was a letdown compared to what we've come to experience as real tours with hands on, authentic, personalized experiences out in nature. 3 hours started to feel more like 5 by the time it was over.

First, I would like to thank you for leaving a review for our tour. Every review is appreciated, for better or worse, because it allows us to hear the concerns of our valued guests.
We do replace the crabs into the pot and re-set them, where they will be able to feed on the ocean floor. Guest expectations are that they will see a crab pot pulled up and it is expected that there will be crab within that pot. While we understand that some guests may feel that this is not an "authentic" fishing experience, it is our hope that it will raise awareness of the crab fishing industry, the biological hazards that are facing sea-life and our work to make the ocean a safer place for man and beast. If we did not convey that effectively, we apologize and will strive to make that more clear on future tours. If one guest leaves the tour with a greater understanding of the eco-system beneath our shores, we feel we have succeeded.
Regarding the portion of the tour when the eagles are fed, this is done with care and consideration for the eagles and their natural habitat. They are fed fish that would be a part of their natural daily diet and it is our hope that by having such a close, first-hand experience, guests will leave the tour with a greater appreciation of this magnificent bird.
Having discussed your review with the Captain and crew, we do hope that in the future you will not hesitate to bring your concerns directly to the tour operator as all concerns can be addressed immediately. We sincerely appreciate that you chose our tour and hope that some elements of it left you with a positive impression.
