“Fabuluous Trip!”
Reviewed June 30, 2014

Not a day goes by since my return from Tower Rock Lodge that I don’t think about plans for a next trip to Alaska. As a Navy veteran stationed at Pearl Harbor Hawaii, I have spent time in many places around the world and few if any have come close to the beauty and serenity of Alaska. My father-in-law and I are very close and have spent a great deal of time together on fishing trips. We have gone on some wonderful trips in the past such as Gulf Stream fishing for Tuna, Tarpon fishing in Key West and a remote fly-in to northern Canada, but I have to say that our trip to Alaska was our best trip to date! I usually am the one who plans vacations for both sides of my family and I spend a great deal of time researching to make our trips memorable. Tower Rock Lodge exceeded my expectations. The food was excellent, the accommodations were exactly as promised, and the staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome. My father-in-law is 82 and the staff went what I consider far beyond what was expected in taking care of him. They even sent an extra guide on our fishing trips to provide some extra help for him. They also provided all the gear. Usually when a place says they provide everything, I am still a bit skeptical and bring a few items of my own (extra fishing rod, reel, knife, pliers, etc.). Tower Rock did in fact provide everything we needed to fish from good quality hip waders and rain gear to top-of-the-line fishing equipment. Of course there was the fishing! We arrived in early June just before the large number of Salmon had entered the rivers and also the Alaska Fish and Game had closed King Salmon fishing on the Kenai where the lodge is located so the fishing was a bit lighter than it would be later in the season. This is, of course, a relative term because a day of “light fishing” in Alaska usually beats most days everywhere else. The advantage was there were no crowds which greatly appealed to us. On most other charter trips we have gone on we simply met the guide at the dock, but at this lodge, the guides are part of the staff. This is a huge advantage in that you have the flexibility to do multiple things in one day if you like. During our stay, we got to know the guides and greatly enjoyed talking with all of them. They were all very willing to share information and help in any way such as teaching us to fly fish. Our first day, we fished for Kings on the Kasilof river. We caught one 25lb wild catch-and-release King Salmon and a few Red Salmon. In this river, we found out you are only allowed to keep the Hatchery King Salmon. They have a clipped fin so you are able to identify them. The Alaska fish and game have done this in an effort to build up the wild King Salmon population. As with most of these rivers, they are glacier fed, so one bit of advice is to take more warm clothes than you think you need. Sitting in a metal boat for most of the day on ice cold water and occasional light rain makes for a chilly fishing trip. Although, we did not go Halibut fishing due to weather, we did substitute with a trout fishing day and a fly-out. These were both highlights of our trip. On the trout fishing day, we both learned how to fly fish and caught plenty of nice catch-and-release trout. We fished on a small lake, Lake Johnson, and with exception to the Eagles, were the only ones there. It was a great relaxing day of fishing! The fly-out was amazing and I would highly recommend that trip for anyone because not only did we catch our limit of Salmon in less than two hours, but we saw grizzly bears, a black bear, and some of the most pristine wilderness imaginable. The pilot even took us on a little "flight seeing" side trip and flew us over a glacier on the way home. It was a fabulous week and many thanks to Mike, Mark, Griff and the entire staff! So, if you are a serious fisherman looking to make a memory of a lifetime, I would highly recommend Tower Rock Lodge

Room Tip: We stayed in a cabin and they were very nice.

Thanks for the kind words and such an articulate explanation of what guests can expect here. Let me know the dates you coming next year and I'll put a request in for weather conditions suitable not just for halibut fishing but for conditions that make the barn door size ones hungry. John

I'm 82 years old and four months before going to TRL I fractured two vertebrae's and had them surgically repaired. My son-in-law and I planned this fishing trip 8 months before we went so we were committed. Needless to say I was concerned about my physical stamina for this trip and 'bothered' Griff, Mike and Mark extensively about my concerns. They all assured me that their folks would give me all the help I needed - AND THEY DID!! I had help getting in/out of the boat/airplane or anything I was not comfortable doing. Additionally, as others have found, the folks (owners, guides and lodge staff) were magnificent. Hard to believe the quality of food and accommodations were so good on a fishing trip. The environment encourages interaction with the staff as well as other fishermen . Could not have had a better experience. Highly recommended no matter you age and physical ability.

Room Tip: We stayed comfortably in a cottage

Allen, glad we could accommodate you and have a chair ready anytime you needed to take a break from reeling all those in. Not sure if it was one of Mike's fish tales or not, but he was saying you landing a sockeye salmon from a lawn chair, a Tower Rock Lodge first!!! John

The management, staff, and guides at Tower Rock Lodge worked tirelessly to ensure that our experience was a memorable one. Accommodations were superior, the food excellent and the lodge staff friendly and outgoing. The guides are fish heads and willing to do what it takes to put you on your target fish. Never once did I see a guide check their watch and try to call it a day, we fished each day until we reached our limit or we as the angler decided we had had enough. Lastly, I wish to commend the owners who provided some of some of the finest and funniest post dinner conversation I have enjoyed. I have been on my share of destination fishing trips and Tower Rock Lodge is among the best. I will be back.

Jeff, sounds like your first trip to Alaska worked out pretty well, all the fishing you could handle and of Mike's after dinner gut busting stories. We enjoyed making you happy and putting you on the fish. John

I had a quick business trip and wanted to at least say I went fishing while I was in Alaska. Saw review of Tower Rock and friends said that Kenai was the place to go so I booked 2 nights and fishing with Mike. I cannot express how great Mike and the entire crew was to make my trip successful. The weather was tough and the water was high, but they knew where to go!

This is a great place from the meals, the rooms, the guides and fishing you cannot go wrong! We even took an excursion to some friend that won the Iditarod to learn about sled dogs. Mike and his crew do all they can to make you feel like family and as welcome as a longtime friend. As you can imagine, I recommend this place more than I can say. Thanks Roger

Tower Rock Lodge created an Alaska fishing adventure of a lifetime for myself, my two sons and my grandson. The Management is outstanding. The staff is professional, competent, accommodating, and most gracious. The accommodations, and meals are extraordinary. Every detail of our stay was carefully planned and provided to us by the experienced and well trained personnel. Upgraded quality equipment, and other fishing necessaries are provided by the host.

The itinerary composed by Tower Rock Lodge was constant and exceptional . . . our fishing sites included river wading, river drifting, and a fly-in for spectacular Silver Salmon. The guides are "first class", and intuitive on angler's abilities, making each event very special for all.

The end-of-day dinners are absolutely remarkable . . . we enjoyed fellowship and shared the days experiences, while sitting outside at firepit, with an after-dinner drink. The perfect end to a perfect day.

Tower Rock Lodge, a great facility, and a great staff, resulted in a most fantastic and memorable experience for everyone. Best of all, we plan to be back next year. Thank you Tower Rock Lodge! Jim K
