Yes, Alaska is gorgeous! Okay, we had incredible experiences viewing wildlife and interacting with local characters. But it is interesting after returning home from our Alaskan cruise that one of the definite highlights of our sojourn was eating at this local establishment in Juneau. We'd been to this city a couple of time previously so have seen and done a lot of things there. We were initially quite disappointed that our favorite Thane Ore House had closed, but the rental car agent steered us in the direction of the San Bar and Grill and we were thrilled she did! Yes, we were warned that it is a bit of a dive. Not to the point where you can't be interested in another layer of Alaskan experience. But the fried Halibut platter made everything worth it. Kind of funny that after consuming a myriad of delectable meals on our cruise, this is probably the meal which stands out in our collective memories after returning home. Would we go back again? You betcha! Don't just settle for the melt-in-your-mouth halibut balls and fries, but be sure to order some of the deep-fried zucchini and other vegetables, too. I can see why they can't add this to the formal tour circuit, but all you independents should put it on your agendas:)

The food was great but didn't know it was a bar and a dive bar. Right in the middle of a argument over pool game. Got out before the fist started to fly.

If your looking for the place the locals go, then this is the place. Don't expect anything fancy. It's behind a bar in an industrial area. But the food is fantastic. Quick fast service in a no frills environment. The owner/cook was friendly and cautious.

JUST GREAT HALIBUT !!!! Order the 8 piece, the 5 piece will just having you want more.

We went here on the recommendation of a locals resident when we first moved here. The halibut fish and chips is great. The service is spotty if you are eating in the bar area. I've been back several times and haven't been disappointed.

When you pull up to the Sand Bar, you are unsure about the place..because the outside of it is a little sketchy. The ambience of the Sand Bar is FUN! The people are friendly! The juke box music makes it fun. There is a pool table that is always busy. The poker table in the back had a game going on. The sampler platter as an appetizer was yummy. The Halibut was delicious!!!! Order it!!
