“Delivers on the whales!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 18, 2012

We took the evening whale watching excursion that we booked through the cruise line. We really enjoyed it. We saw a pod of orcas and we several pods of hump back whales. We got lots of pictures. We had plenty of opportunities to view the whales. Eventhough the boat was almost full it didn't seem crowded. It was raining part of the time but we saw a lot of whales. The outside viewing area was great and ideal for getting pictures. The crew did a great job telling about the whales and their habits. On the evening whale watching excursion they served food. The had several kinds of salads, appetizers, and the like. The also had roast beef and reindeer sausage. There was more than enough food. They also had a galley that served sodas and beer. It was a very enjoyable trip. I would recommend this for any one.

“Not at all disappointed!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 17, 2012

I've been on these types of tours before only to be disappointed with the "fine print" but this was in NO WAY a disappointment!

We were cruising with Celebrity Cruises and this was offered as one of their preferred excursions in Juneau, Alaska. I was incredibly impressed with everyone involved with Allen Marine Tours. The naturalists clearly love their jobs and everything about Alaska and the wildlife there. They were approachable, encouraged questions and discussion and were very knowledgeable.

The boat ride out to Orca Point Lodge even produced a quick whale sighting that got everyone excited before things even got started. Lunch at the lodge was fantastic and with a small gift shop full of locally made gifts. Our lunch consisted of homemade coleslaw that was to die for (at the table they provided a list of ingredients), steamed veggies, Hawaiian sweet dinner rolls, herbed rice, grilled local salmon and skewered chicken seasoned with a rub that you could buy in the gift shop. Oh - and the best homemade brownies! The staff was friendly and like the naturalist - clearly loved what they did.

Then we set out for about an hour and 45 minute ride where we cruised through various parts of the waterways around Douglas Island and the Chilkat Peninsula. We all were encouraged to keep our eyes open for "blows" and when we did we yelled out a position and then the fun began! The boat driver would carefully get us as close as we could and although we weren't fortunate enough to see a breach (jumping out of the water), we probably saw close to 20 backs and 4-5 tails which prompted the entire boat to break out in applause every time! So much fun!

There really wasn't a bad seat on the boat because the driver was sure to turn the boat so everyone got a good look - given the whale stuck around long enough and most of the time they did.

And only because I wondered before taking this tour - what kind of whales would we see? We went on September 9th and we only saw Humpbacks but you might get lucky and see an Orca too! I also wondered about the comfort of the boat as we were traveling in September but we had the option of sitting down below where it was enclosed and heated or up top for a better (chillier) view but all seats were good!

Another tip - lots of restroom opportunities. :)

I want to say you won't be disappointed but if you're expecting animals to preform on cue like they do at Sea World - you just might. But for wild animals allowing us to invade their water - they were very hospitable!

“Experience of a Lifetime”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 4, 2012

Humpback whales, sea lions, eagles what a great adventure. This guaranteed whale watching excursion was part of our Princess package and was so worth it. They guaranteed we would see whales and wow did we ever. A pod of humpback whales continously circled the boat and we we got to see them bubble-net feeding and seeing these magnificant animals up close was awe inspiring. The staff were very friendly and extremely knowlegeable of the area and the animals that we saw and the snacks and drinks available on board were a nice touch. The catamaran was great you could see from all sides with the large windows or could even go outside on the upper deck if you wanted to. The tour was about 2 1/2 hours and I'm glad that it was the only one we did so we did not have to rush. Would highly recommend this tour.

“An awesome experience.”

Humpback whales, sea lions, seals, eagles and ORCAS!!! A great tour of the area to with a very knowlegable and friendly staff. The orca point lodge was a beautiful facility in a fantastic setting and the salmon bake lunch was excellent. They do offer chicken as an option for those who do not like salmon.

“Whales and glaciers”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 31, 2012

This tour was slickly organised and the whale boat captains clearly have finding whales down to a fine art. The company's policy is not to get nearer than 100 yards to any sightings. however, this does not stop whales coming closer to the boats and we were treated to an unbelievable display from a very showy pod of orcas. To come this close to these animals in the wild is an exhilarating experience and we felt privileged. The glacier trip is probably a bit tight for time in the 1 hour allowed. If you want to walk to the glacier, you'll use up the time just doing this. However, many people just visit the visitor centre and don't need any more time- therefore, it's a compromise and wont suit everyone. However, people need to see for themselves the rate at which this spectacular glacier is retreating. Great experience all round and plenty of food for thought.
