Owner description: Gold Rush Dog Tours highlights summer cart-mushing in the picturesque Sheep Creek in Juneau, Alaska. Your approach to dog-camp will bring you by the relics of Juneau's famed mining history, transporting you through the rain forest from sea level to our mountain valley home. While in camp, you will meet the Handlers and Mushers of Sheep Creek, as well as their teammates, the famed dogs of Alaska's official state sport. Following proper introductions, dog sled history, and a little mushing 101, you will take to our specially designed trainer carts for a 20-15 minute ride. Be sure to watch for porcupine, eagles, and even the potential black bear along the way. And then, there's cookies. Upon returning, it's time to crab a cookie and hot cup of cocoa prior to departing ways for your next adventure. Gold Rush Sled Dogs is ideal for groups and mushers of all ages. We look forward to seeing you this summer, happy tails!

We totally enjoyed our experience. The sight of so many dogs was amazing and the ride was truly great. Our musher was Tonya Schlentner and she made the time so worthwhile. Her stories of the Idarod and the love she showed for her dogs made us better able to imagine what a super experience this race would be. Not that any of us would want to run it. Anyone visiting Juneau should consider this experience. It was a highlight of our trip.
Thanks so much

Thank you Don,

I am happy to hear that you enjoyed your experience. Should you ever feel the need to get out there and participate in the Last Great Race, we would be happy to give you some pointers. Tonya is an amazing musher and we are honored to count her as one of our own. Thank you for choosing to visit Alaska this summer, enjoy

“Enthusiastic Dogs + Mushers = Happy Tourists”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 8, 2012

Jeremy and the other just-post-college mushers that guide the guests were so interested in sharing information and facts about their dogs that they raised this made-for-tourist event above the amusing tourist trap that we had expected. The young mushers had stars in their eyes as they talked about their sport. And, the 120 dogs in the yard barked a chorus of “Pick Me! Pick Me!” whenever a summer sled was being hooked up and dogs chosen to pull it. The high energy enthusiasm was contagious and good fun. The highlight was the ride on the dog-powered wheeled summer sled, although we also loved the dog talk by Jeremy and the opportunity to hold a five-week-old future sled dog.

The summer dog camp’s organization and style ensure a consistent, positive experience. The place is well run and well laid out, and is a nicely conceived glimpse of sled dog racing. This is a basic, no frills attraction that is well suited for its subject. I am happy that our tourist dollars bought some of the dogs kibble and their handlers some more time learning the sport.

Thank you Galen,

We strive to put forth a genuine product and pride ourselves on the efforts of our staff. Jeremy is a prime example of the magic of dog mushing, for once they experience it, they can't put it down. Thank you for your review and visiting us this summer. I assure you, the puppies appreciate the kibble. Have a great summer Galen, take care

“Fun, Fun, Fun!”

After a lengthy delay getting to the camp due to construction on the roads from the port to the camp, we arrived and were met by very nice camp staff and excited dogs. Our tourguide/musher was Shaynee Seipke. She was extremely nice and knowledgeable (not to mention having the most beautiful skin!)
We first went to a couple of huts at the camp to view a real dog sled, dog mittens, musher outfits etc. Then we had hot chocolate and cookies. Finally we got in our wheeled sled for a ride with Shaynee's own dogs who clearly respect her and follow her commands. Last, but certainly not least, we got to cuddle with the most recent puppies who were only a few weeks old. Heaven!

Great outing but felt a bit rushed due to construction on roads. Saw 2 black bears on the way back to the boat!

We are hoping the construction will be past us soon!! Sorry for the delay. The sled dog camp is on the edge of town. Bear, deer, goats and porcupine are freguently spotted on the drive.

Glad you were able to join us. All of the mushers at Summer Camp work with their team throughout the year. During the winter some of them do winter tours on snow and the others train for a sled dog race.

“Great adventure!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 3, 2012

Greeted by dozens of howling but friendly Alaskan huskies was a great beginning to this tour. We had a delightful personal tour guide "musher" Shaynee Siepke, who raises her own dogs and is training to run the Ididirod Dogsled Race! She gave us a great tour, followed by an exciting dogsled ride! But the best part was the adorable puppies! A terrific tour!
