We booked a half day salmon fishing thru Rum Runner from the reservation to being promptly picked up by Capt. Chris and Brandi everything was great. We went out with Capt. Josh and his mate. Their professionalism at their age was truly impressive. While we did not catch any fish, the scenery and seeing whales was wonderful. If they had not been booked for the afternoon we would have stayed for the day.

My friend booked 8 of us to go on this excursion late June. She read posts on this site and decided the price was fair and the communication was thorough and immediate. It was pouring down rain when we arrived but we were greeted with smiles and umbrellas as they walked us to their two boats. I had the privledge of riding with Captain Josh and his mate. They went over the safety features of the boat before we departed in the rain. We learned a lot of history of not only the area but all of the mammals and wildlife. Josh is very knowledgable and very nice. We saw Humpbacks, orcas, sea lions and eagles. He positioned the boat so we had the best view for the most amazing photos I've ever taken! It truly was the best 4 hours of the trip, even in the rain. I would highly recommend Captain Chris and Captain Josh for this amazing excursion. You will NOT be disappointed!

Our family of six decided to avoid the crowded whale watching tours that were offered by the cruise line and for less money, book a four hour tour with an experienced marine biologist (Captn. Chris). In my opinion, booking a private charter is no comparison to fighting tons of other people on over crowded boats to see the whales. Especially if you are short or have kids. Capt. Chris had the perfect boat with a nice warm enclosed downstairs with food and drink and an open upstairs with a perfect 360 degree view of the water and plenty of seating. He is very friendly and knowledgeable. Took the time to teach the kids about the whales and what they were seeing. Of course no one can predict what you see but our 1/2 day with him was like a national geographic special. Salmon and porpoise were jumping out of the water as he took us around. We saw a group of four humpbacks bubble feeding and watched for quite awhile. He showed us seals and seal lions. Then a little later, he located another humpback for us. And just when we thought the humpback had left the area, the whale came up and breached right in front of our boat. Capt. Chris has a fishfinder, plenty of knowledge and remains in contact with other charter boats to obtain the location of the whales. The odds are very good you are going to see them. He was helpful and friendly in the booking stages, and even more helpful and friendly in person. We were one of the first people off the cruise ship and he was promptly waiting for us with a nice large sign. He gave us a history lesson on the way to the bay. I enjoyed learning about the sea life and his enthusiasm for what he was doing showed. Out of all our excursions, this was the best. Bar none. Not just because of what we saw, but the boat was comfortable and we could do what we wanted, stay as long at a site as we chose and not have to fight for a spot and take turns looking like we did on the more crowded cruise ship excursions. An Alaskan cruise is a pricy vacation and seeing this type of marine life can be a once in a lifetime experience...so do it right the first time. Book with Rum Runner Charters. You will not be disappointed.

We were picked up at the port and driven to the dock passing the Mendenhall Glacier on the way. Once at the dock our captain provided some background on the port and tides as well as educated us on the vessel. We chose the 4 hour tour and were not disappointed seeing several different humpback whales as well as a pod bubble netting for fish. Finally, we returned to the pier and witnessed bald eagles soaring close to the boat. It was incredible. The captain, deckhand, and the company made booking easy, the vessel was clean with snacks provided, and they worked hard to make sure that we had a great time. This was our favorite Alaskan excursion.

The captain, the deckhand, and their dog are all awesome! They are very hospitable and welcoming!! We caught 2 fish! Obviously you can't guarantee a catch but the boat and the people running it are GREAT!!! Free pickup from the ship terminal! Great guys and great value. Definitely recommend!
