Recommended length of visit: More than 3 hours
Owner description: Mendenhall Glacier is easily accessible via roads from the local airport, cruise ship terminal and state ferry terminal. Our facility and lands are managed by the federal government through the United States Forest Service. Federal passes are accepted and sold s well as daily passes. There is a visitor center with a theater showing a 15-minute film on Mendenhall Glacier, a bookstore operated by nonprofit organization Discovery Southeast, and exhibits on wildlife, history, and glacial and geological changes. Rangers provide talks at various indoor and outdoor sites in summer. Open hours in summer are daily 8am to 7:30pm. Due to wildlife and bears, no food is allowed outdoors from April-November. There is no beverage or food service available to prevent bears from becoming food-conditioned. Nearby Steep Creek is the spawning stream for wild sockeye salmon from late July through early September. Later in the fall, a run of coho salmon spawn in the creek. Porcupines can be seen foraging on leaves in deciduous trees. Beavers are visible early in the morning and in the evening. Learn about Alaska and the natural world around the glacier and lake. Enjoy a one-hour hike to 400-foot-tall Nugget Falls. Other trails lead to different habitats. In winter, the visitor center is open Friday-Sunday from 10am to 4pm and closed on federal holidays.

We took a blue bus for $16 round trip out of Juneau to see the glacier. It was worth the trip. The glacier has really receded since the building of the visitor's center. There is a 2-mile hike round trip to get a close up view of a waterfall next to the glacier. The glacier is massive; all should see it if possible.

This site was easy to get to- many shuttles, and not far from downtown! There are really easy short hikes right near the glacier, and longer more intense hikes (West Glacier Trail) that peak over the top of the glacier. We did them all, and they were all great!

The Glacier is beautiful, and there is a lovely walk below the Visitor's Center. However, I recommend making sure you take time to hike one of the trails. My family hiked on the East Loop trail, where the sound of waterfalls is all around you. It's a rainforest eco-system, with a very manageable trail. My husband grew up in the Catskills, and I lived near the Shenandoah Valley - and we both agreed it was one of the loveliest trails we've ever hiked.

After a short hike from the parking lot, you can get fairly close to Mendenhall Glacier. It is absolutely beautiful and so impressive.

There are also good sized icebergs floating in the lake below the glacier that are SO blue. Amazing.

This was a highlight of our cruise! We took the Mendenhall Glacier & Whale Quest tour in the morning which was wonderful. We saw humpback and killer whales, sea lions and seals along with the Mendenhall Glacier from the visitor's center. However, our helicopter tour that afternoon was the absolute highlight. The helicopter seated 4 plus the pilot so the person in the middle back may not have gotten quite as good a view but I was in the front passenger seat so my view was fabulous. We landed on the glacier and walked around with a guide for almost 30 minutes. The guide was interesting, friendly and informative and the time on the glacier was very exciting. Up close the glacier was nothing like I expected - the crevices were such a deep beautiful blue and it was very craggy in places. They give you special boots and warm clothing to wear over your own clothes although it was still cold. My pictures of the glacier and the helicopter flight are wonderful. I loved this excursion!! Well worth the time and the high price!
