We went in very early season (May) so it was grey and raining the whole trip. We made the trip out anyway and it was very nice to see the glacier. We were able to walk on the "beach' and got great, unobstructed views. The visitors center was very crowded and cost money. We didn't need to the visitor center to truly enjoy our trip to the glacier. I would recommend going out. One note, even on a grey, raining day, you could see the line of commercial helicopters heading out to land on the glacier. it was a little distracting but not the fault of the visitor center etc.
