Owner description: The Alaska State Museum located in the new state-of-the-art Fr. Andrew P. Kashevaroff (APK) in Juneau, presents a unique view of Alaska’s history and diverse cultures. Exhibits feature an expansive collection of Alaska Native materials, fine art, and objects relating to topics such as mining, fishing, forestry, tourism, Russian-American period, and World War II. The Science on a Sphere TM theater cycles through a variety of animated geographical programs showing Alaska’s place in the world. There is a discovery room, with a climb-aboard replica of an early sailing ship and fun activities for all ages. There is always something new to see in the changing temporary exhibitions. The special summer 2017 shows are "Decolonizing Alaska" – featuring the work of 30 artists addressing resilience, adaptation & cultural survival resulting from dominant forces such as colonization and climate change, and the "Grand Visions of the Great Land: Historic and contemporary Art from the Alaska State Museum Collection". Upstairs, visitors can also explore the State Library and Archives with Alaskana collections, newspapers and magazines, WiFi, and more. A small cafe on the first floor serves breakfast and lunch as well as coffee. In the summer we are open 9am-5pm daily. Come visit!

Full of Alaskan history. From the beginning to current. Wildlife as well as human. A must see for history buffs.

The museum has exceptional Native Alaska exhibits with items from numerous cultures depicting the entire state along with gold rush history and displays from current artists. The exhibits are well done and gave detailed information about each culture. The museum was quite impressive! The museum was located within walking distance from the cruise ship and most ages would enjoy it.

Of course its a smaller one compared to some cities but you can see the effort and detail put into it. Very friendly staff and a nice gift shop. (check the on sale print rack for cheap but high quality gifts).
Perfect size for a quick Cruise tour destination and walking distance from port.
We even saw mountain sheep on the mountain next to it.
Below they ask if it has wheelchair access; I have no idea.

Just got back from my NCL Cruise to Alaska. I am not a Museum fan, but this was an excellent Museum to bring the family. The exhibits were well documented and I have an even higher regard for the creativity and ingenuity of the original Native Alaskans and the original settlers. The price is extremely reasonable for what you get. It is well worth the visit. Don’t miss it.

Very good Alaska Native Culture exhibits with items from across the entire state, not just SE Coastal areas. Also some gold rush history, some new works by current artists. Moderate size, very approachable, and good destination in the rain. Opens 8:30am in summer, something to do early.
