Owner description: The Alaska State Museum located in the new state-of-the-art Fr. Andrew P. Kashevaroff (APK) in Juneau, presents a unique view of Alaska’s history and diverse cultures. Exhibits feature an expansive collection of Alaska Native materials, fine art, and objects relating to topics such as mining, fishing, forestry, tourism, Russian-American period, and World War II. The Science on a Sphere TM theater cycles through a variety of animated geographical programs showing Alaska’s place in the world. There is a discovery room, with a climb-aboard replica of an early sailing ship and fun activities for all ages. There is always something new to see in the changing temporary exhibitions. The special summer 2017 shows are "Decolonizing Alaska" – featuring the work of 30 artists addressing resilience, adaptation & cultural survival resulting from dominant forces such as colonization and climate change, and the "Grand Visions of the Great Land: Historic and contemporary Art from the Alaska State Museum Collection". Upstairs, visitors can also explore the State Library and Archives with Alaskana collections, newspapers and magazines, WiFi, and more. A small cafe on the first floor serves breakfast and lunch as well as coffee. In the summer we are open 9am-5pm daily. Come visit!

The museum is a great place to get a broad overview of the history of Alaska, its regions, and the people that populate them. We spent about 1-1/2 hours browsing the exhibits. Admission was $7/pp for adults.

“Museam”

We had done some tours in Juneau before, so this time we just went to the State Museum. It was pretty interesting if you like that sort of thing -- lots of history on pre-European, Russian and U.S. eras.

“Very Nice Museum”
Reviewed June 4, 2013

This is a great museum and not so overwhelming that you can't enjoy it in an hour or so. Also seemed to have hands-on activities for kids -- that I just walked by. The circular walk-up past a central diorama is great.

Wonderful presentations of historical artifacts from Native, Russian and United States Control. We spent about 1.5 hours going through the museum and had a wonderful time.
