Description: AJ's Oldtown Steakhouse & Tavern is known locally as the "Historic Waterfront". AJ's is proud to be serving up the top 2% of USDA Prime Beef offered in the Nation and the only on the Kenai Peninsula. Offering mouth-watering steaks & great seafood including Scallops, King Crab, Fresh Halibut & Salmon! Let's not forget those delicious cheese burgers, the Tavern Menu, Spirits and Specialty Martinis in a casual old town atmosphere! This venue also features great family entertainment & dinner music before 10pm. If your looking for food late...AJ's is the last Kitchen open in Homer. Come in and see what's new. The transformation is amazing! We've kept the old town hospitality tradtion going and are still serving Homer's famous Red Knot Craft Beer, the Old Town Rusty Nail & some amazing specialty martinis! Some history...Established in 1941 AJ's has an amazing history. The front part of the building was built as the original women's club in 1937. Laura & Walt purchased it from the women's club and it opened as the first cafe & bar in Homer in 1941. They named it the Homer Cafe & Club. It featured just a few bar stools, a pool table, and a tiny kitchen. Over the years it has had many owners including Tex & Marge Sharp. They named it the "Waterfront" and it became known as the best place on the peninsula to get a good steak! In the 1970's folks would spend hours at the Waterfront being entertained by the likes of Harley Hess & Hobo Jim. In the 1990's it became Duggan's and featured a friendly, Irish Pub atmosphere. Now, as AJ's, the old town building has come full circle back to the ol' Waterfront days, featuring great Steak, Seafood, Spirits & Entertainment, along with the same friendly old town hospitality that has been a tradition for over 70 years.

“This is a locals joint - travelers not really welcome”

I'm a sociable kiwi guy who's been living in AK for the last 6 mths. I went here on a Saturday night after the Fat Olive (which was excellent; go there instead). The staff basically ignored me and the locals blew me off. Strictly a locals joint; travelers not really welcome.

This comes as a contrast to my travels here; I have found Alaska to be the warmest and most welcoming place I have ever visited. Try Chair 5 in Girdwood if you want a real AK welcome; leave AJ's to the moronic locals.

We walked in. We walked out. There is a reason there were only about 3 people in the bar/restaurant. I think it was the sticky floors that turned us off.

“Best steak in Alaska!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 15, 2012 via mobile

Waitress excellent and knowledgeable about the food. Ordered a 12oz rib eye and a sirloin for the wife which was the special.
The beef is advertised as being from local grass fed cattle, and it was clear from the first bite that this was quality meat!
If you're in Homer look no further for steak, probably the best steak we've ever had!

“Mouthwatering! To die for! Must go!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 6, 2012 via mobile

Mmmmm...AJ's serves locally raised cattle. McNeil Canyon beef I believe. Ohhh, it was mouthwatering. Three of us ordered it: medium, medium- rare and rare. All three of us were well-pleased with the steak. We a agreed that each of ours was served true to form. The waiter told us the cattle was all grass-fed and perfectly marbleized. We were delighted with our meal. Gosh. I almost feel tongue-tied like a lovesick teenager, but I'm telling you; AJ's steakhouse has got to go on your bucket list! I've never had the expensive $300 a pound Japanese steak-but I'm sure this is their American Counterpart!
Side note - they also had a jukebox and for $5.00 you get 18 songs. Lemme tell you - the service was stellar, the food was divine, their wine list was excellent, the bathrooms were clean and the music was great. Doesn't get any better than that! Wait - yes, it gets better. The prices were reasonable. I think our steak meals were $24.95 and came with your choice of a starch and vegetable.
