“I will be honest with you.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 18, 2012

Well, I will be honest. This place is old and the floors and loud! But I would not stay anywhere else while in Homer! It is the scenery and the location that makes this place! The room was ok, we actually had a loft room which means we had a bathroom and sitting area downstairs and our bed was upstairs. Nice? Kinda, but having to walk up and down the stairs especially at night to get to the bathroom was tiring. Plus, the old wooden floors creaked so you heard this all night long with others walking around. I will say this place is not quiet at all. One night we kept waking up to what sounded like someone building a new hotel next to us. Still have no idea what we heard. Again, the breath taking views from the ocean side balcony is what you are staying here for! As we saw a few whales and a porpoise from our room!
Other than that, our bed was comfy enough. I do was we would have had a screen on our window as we wanted to keep it open for some fresh air and to listen to the water, but with no screen we were just asking for misquitos.
The restaurant served a wonderful and descent priced breakfast.
The outside hot tub was nice- especially when it is so cold out, but at the time we went it was hard to get into as so many others had the same idea. They do have an indoor small pool and sauna.
The location really makes this place stay able as I would stay here again, despite the few issues we did have. There is not another hotel on the spit and the spit is where it all is at. This hotel is walking distance to the harbor and several nice restaurants. Plus, just being able to leave your room and be directly on the beach was very nice. So if you want seclusion try this place!

Room Tip: Ask for an Oceanside view!

Since we were traveling with extended family, we stayed in one of the beachfront condo rentals, #701. The condo was really beautiful - we enjoyed simple, modern decor, comfy living room chairs, a full kitchen with everything we needed to make our own breakfast and lunch at the condo, and it was spotlessly clean. We arrived during a storm that was hammering the Homer spit with 50-60 MPH winds, but it was kind of exciting to watch the stormy seas from the massive two story windows in our condo. There was a gas fireplace that was surprisingly effective and kept us all toasty while we waited for the storm to subside.

The condo also had a lovely looking deck, but unfortunately we weren't really able to use it because it was so windy during our stay. There was a bench right inside the window, though, which we spent a fair bit of time viewing the birds and otters and other sea life! The proximity to the beach was awesome - we made use of it and took lots of beach walks during our stay.

The only reason I am giving it four stars instead of five is because of the odd lack of privacy and soundproofing in the condo. Our condo had three bedrooms, but two of them (the ones with en suite bathrooms - which I should also add, had no doors!) had big open windows looking down onto the main living room, separated only by some retractable shudders. It just just felt weird not to be able to speak without everyone else in the house hearing you. This means pretty much everyone has to agree to retire for the night at the same time or else come equipped with earplugs. We couldn't watch tv or listen to music or have a conversation in a normal voice after even one person went to bed, because noise traveled so easily in the house.
Still, it was an overall great experience, despite the oddness of the condo layout.

Pretty location. Room was nice, one queen sized bed, ground floor in the “newer” area, had a patio and great view. No maid service, lots of paperwork to sign when checking in, front desk people were kind of clueless but not rude.

We stayed 2 nights at Land's End in August. (Hotel) It was our favorite place in Alaska to stay. People say the rooms are outdated. We didn't find that to be true. We stayed in a 2 room 2nd floor w/ balcony overlooking the bay. It was ideal for the 4 of us. Kids had their own area. But why you would spend a ton of time in the room is beyond me! The view is killer. I had to pinch myself to remember it was the real deal as I sat on my balcony (yes, small, but who cares?!) overlooking otters playing and those beautiful mountains. The food in the restaurant was terrific. And we lioved the concierge - so helpful and interesting. The deck is fantastic. hot tub overlooking the bay. The pool is more like a huge hot tub, but the kids loved it.
We loved watching the otters play and were very excited one day to have 2 humpback whales come up for air 15 feet off the beach (the tide is incredibly high/low - difference of 21 feet or so, which makes it very deep at high tide). I would go back again in a heartbeat! Walking distance to the small area of stores and restaurants on the beach.

We choose the condo rental managed by the Lands End hotel in Homer Alaska. The condo was very new, and had all the amenities required of any hotel stay (coffee maker, refrigerator, and microwave). The room had a queen size bed, and featured wireless internet, TV, etc. Fully functional room with a great view of the Homer sea activity including boats, seagulls, etc. don't expect to go swimming, as the ocean temps are pretty cold but beach wanderings will show a lot of seaweed and miscellaneous driftwood washed up on the beach. Halibut fishing tours abound, and If you don't desire a warm dip in the ocean and want to have a great view of the Kachemak bay, use the Lands End.

Room Tip: Use the option for a condo rental

It was heaven on earth.
Every room has a patio and chair with a view of the ocean. It is gorgeous. The rooms have a nautical theme, which is befitting to the setting.
From site-seeing, beach combing and eating after work, we only hit the rooms around 1:00 am and were back out by 7:30 am.
There is something so spiritual about the ocean and being right next to the shore is AMAZING!

This is our forth time here over the past five years. The View is none stop. The resort sits at the end of a four + mile spit looking across at many glaciers, etc. Fishing boats, ferrys, all kinds of boats go by. At real low tide have a great time looking for all kinds of things. Otters, Orcas, Seals swim by, etc., etc. The food is great at a good price for HOMER, AK. The staff is friendly and on the ball. The new Midshipman Rooms are large with a small balcony & on cold days sit inside with your coffee & still see the great view !!

Room Tip: The New Midshipman Rooms have the view's. The new ones are larger & have frig. & microw...
