“"The" place to stay near Denali NP”
Reviewed September 8, 2008

I would really recommend these cabins when looking for accomodation near Denali NP. The cabins are located 10-20 min. by car from the entrance (depends how fast you drive...). We booked 3 nights there & 2 cabins. They are almost new (built some 3-4 yeras ago) and look that. They were built with attention to detail too, which is nice to see. Cabins have full kitchen and 2 queen beds. Porch has a beautiful view of the mountain range, there is an outside gril to use and the surroundings are quiet. The only negatives (and details really) that I will separately let the owner know as well are: 1/ only 2 ceiling lights and no bed-side lamps/lights - very annoying (to me at least), 2/ some of the pots in the kitchen, though scrubbed clean, just need to be replaced (there is not much to do once previous guests obviously really burned something in them and the bottom looks it) - I did not want to use them. This is in contrast to the fact that everything else was new and sparkling. There is a complimentary coffee, which is nice too.

We booked 3 nights here in August and really didn't know what to expect. We booked this place over other similar places because of the full kitchen and price (~$150 night incl tax).

We were very happy with our decision to stay here! The property consists of 2 personal buildings (owned by Doug) and 3 individual cabins that was side by side. Each cabin has 2 beds, a full bath, a full kitchen, and a nice deck. There's also a nice gas grill for guests to use. The place is away from the Parks Highway so there's little traffic and noise. Beautiful views, very peaceful and quiet!

The place was spotless as well. The TV was a bit of a joke (placed on top of the armoir and maybe a 12") - but as previous posters have said, you're not really staying there to watch tv.

I would recommend this place to anyone willing to drive ~15 min to get to the park and who wants quiet accomodations.

  • Liked — view, full kitchen, price

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights in late June. I was a little reluctant in booking here as there was only one review at the time on tripadvisor, and it really didn't provide much details. But what a pleasant surprise. The cabin is about 10 miles north of the park, and is an easy drive to the park entrance. The cabins are tucked away off a side road, and are peaceful and quiet. There are fabulous views of the mountains all around. The accommodations are basic but comfortable. The kitchen was a nice feature to have available. The cabin does also have satellite TV, but be aware that signals in the area are very weak so there may only be about 5 channels to choose from sometimes. There is a small convenience store right around the corner and also a small restaurant where you can get dinner and even pizza for take out. So even though you are not in what they call "glitter glutch" there are nearby options available for food.
The owner Doug was nice, and pretty much let you keep to yourself during your stay...but was only a stones throw away if needed. He did clean the cabin each day as well.
The cabin was really a nice place to go back to after a long day of excursions. At $135 night, I felt it was a great deal for the area and would recommend others to stay here.

I read about the spruce cabin on tripadvisor and decided to try them out. Since i have a toddler who prefers home cooked meals as opposed to just pizza and mac and cheese, i needed a place with full kitchen and something close to the Denali national park. The cabins met at all the criteria - a full kitchen, 11 miles from the park entrance and 2 decent sized beds! The kitchen did not have a dish washer but that was OK with us. Doug the owner is very nice and helpful. we locked ourselves out the first night and he was willing to drive down and open the cabin for us late in the evening and he did not even wince about it!! For the first time a full kitchen also meant basic things like salt and pepper included! Will stay here again!

Healy seems like an ideal place to stay near Denali. We stayed at the Alaskan Spruce Cabins, which had a full kitchen and two double beds. The TV was tiny, but who cares, it never got turned on. The decor was basic, but nice. Doug was quick to get us settled in and leave us be. We had a moose and calf walk through the front yard our first morning. And, I think there would have been a great view of the surrounding mountains from our porch, if not for all of the clouds. Hey, what do you expect, it's Denali! The grocery store in Healy was pretty basic, better to supply yourself in Glitter Gulch. The liquor store was attached, in the Alaska style. Also didn't see any restaurants, but I read somewhere there are some... I liked the Salmon Bake in Glitter Gulch. The Halibut Burrito was great!
