Pretty remote area, but reasonably priced for
this area as there aren't many options around, especially in the winter. Hamburger and pizza were pretty good.

The food was great, the staff was great and the price was right on. Only weird thing I experienced which is not the fault of the cafe is we were the only non-locals in the cafe so we felt out of place.

Mid September we spent the night at the Alaska Spruce Cabins and stopped in for dinner. The food, service and price were great. We liked it so much we went back for breakfast the next morning. Again everything was good. Will stop in again when we are in the area.

There's not a whole lot of choices in the area for affordable family food, as other restaurants tend to be at one end of the spectrum or the other. Totem's menu and servings are fairly typical roadside cafe fare, mostly what you expect although there have also been a time or two that we've had to return food to the kitchen. Restaurant staff here tend to be less attentive to details, appearances, and customers than you'd expect and receive at places closer to the park that are run by park concessionaire or cruise ship companies. Still, totem serves late and stays open when others close late in the season, so we generally eat a few meals at Totem Inn every fall when we visit Denali.

On the way back to Anchorage we stopped at the Totem Inn for the night. It was just as nice as it was last time and just as busy. The rates for the rooms dropped to $90, nice. It's cold here, and it snowed, in Sept.

It also reminded me that I was going to leave a review for the restaurant.

When we were here in Aug., we stay in the area for about a week and ate at pretty much every place. The place we ended up eating at the most was the Totem. It’s not fine dining; it’s not a steak house or a seafood house. If you are looking for these, don’t eat at the Totem. What we found at the totem was some of the best country cooking we’ve had in years. All the items are made from scratch. I had the chicken fried steak twice and had to be reminded to try other things. All the items we tried were great. They only have one server on per shift and boy do they hustle. I found out on this repeat trip that the Totem has been in business for over 30 years and owned by the same family. Not many business can say that. If you stop here, you have to try the pizza it’s really good and the wife says to try the pasta dishes, I like the chicken fried steak. I like the food, the prices and the people, what more can I say. Oh the prices….they are not bad, as an example: A grilled cheese sandwich with fries is only $4.00. The same sandwich at Roses café is $7.00, at the 49th state brewy…$9.00. The prices are like this across the whole menu, which is over 5 pages, lots of choices. We will be taking a pizza to go when we leave.
