McKinley RV Park and Campground
Reviewed July 1, 2012

Like many others, I booked our stay at McKinley RV based on their advertisements and favorable reviews. Unfortunately, they do not live up to their self proclaimed "arguably the best RV park in Denali" by a long shot. When booking, I was assured we were being placed in a beautiful scenic site. When we pulled up to said site (#7) the "scenery" included a rusted out bus right next to us. OK, so it wasn't scenic, but we were going to try to make the most of a bad situation. The next stop was checking out the bathroom and showers. Lots of Weeds protruded out from the spaces on the steps leading up to the bathhouse-- not at all like the picture in the ad. The bathrooms and showers were archaic -- with dust hanging thick from the vents. Then, there was the trash that was overflowing from the dumpster. The final insult was that when we hooked up to the electric at our "full hook up" site, there was no power. Oops, so sorry, the other RV's on that line must have used up all the current available. It was almost comical how genuinely surprised the young man at the store was when I told him we would not be staying. I was so disgusted, I would have forfeited the entire amount I had paid just to get out of there, but he was gracious enough to reimburse 90%. Fortunately, there was a site available at Denali RV just down the road. Yes, we had to pay for showers, but it was well worth it for the clean bathrooms. Alaska RV parks in general are different than you find elsewhere and that took some getting used to, but McKinley RV was the worst by far. What a huge disappointment!

This was a great place to stay. I liked that there was a fully stocked little grocery right on property, lots of nice laundry machines, and a convenient shuttle bus to the Denali Park Wilderness Access Center and the "Canyon" area so we didn't have to drive our big rig around town. Just be sure to get a shuttle schedule before you leave.

We booked this campground based on its location close to the Denali Park and provides full hook-up including free wi-fi.
When we found out we need to pay for the showers, we wanted to inspect the place first... the showers looked awfull so we decided to shower in the RV.
It seemed that also the wi-fi did not provide a sufficient stable signal to make a connection.
The dump connection was dirty...
We c ertainly will use another campground during a future trip to this part of Alaska

And we thaught that we had seen and experienced everything...
This place is a disgrace and I really don't understand how people can describe the opposite.
Please be honest and don't just write a story. May be not all of ya have been to the showers? And what ab. $3 to take one, if it works, can close, or the tab isn't missing. And may be the word 'clean' hasn't the same meaning to all, to our standards (we were 5) it was dirty and in bad repair.
Been in the groceries? Didn't see any mice? WE DID!
We had an RV campsite almost on the road, cause of double booking!?And there were others!
But no worries, we had a compromise! free showers! Grr...
We couldn't believe that this was the same place as we had seen -and booked- on the internet site... And if you want to see contrasts...
Anyway it was a terrible weather, pooring rain and we were tired. We also needed electricity to charge the RV batteries for our 2 nights in Denali NP ;so we stayed.
But don't think that we managed to get our spot like that, and since we had to move to yet another place, we had to go back to the office ...
Only writing all this makes me nervous again...and unfortunately this was also the reason that we didn't find the courage to take pictures: "To bad we didn't !!!"
Later at night we realised that a grocery store and gas station, open 24h a day, can cause a lot of noise, and drunks like to wake up sleeping tourists...
In all, this was the worst experience of a 9 weeks trip! And nothing is more true!
We have been mislead and the fact that the owner not even tried to make things up, says it all.
The girl who took care ab. us was very gentle and we told her so too. She offered us the compensation of the free showers and felt really sorry. She promised to ask her boss to give us a refund. Until now...still no reaction...

Despite this misadventure: "Denali is awesome"

Finally an RV Park in Alaska thats not a gravel pit on the side of the highway. The park is located behind their grocery store down the hill. It's wooded and quite. They have a shuttle that takes you to the National Park for $1 each way. We walked to The 49th State Brewing Co which had great food and The Bus from the Movie "Into the Wild." It was a great place to stay.

We stayed at the Park a week ago and loved it. The staff was friendly and the park was clean. We stayed at a full hook up site.

We booked 5 nights here in July based on their ads and website and the limited reviews we could find. What a huge mistake! Only stayed one night and here is why: To start with the tent sites are tiny, we had other campers right on top of us. The tent sites are right next to a road and a rafting operation - you hear cars and the workers at the rafting company talking and loading rafts and hitching and unhitching trailers all night long. The area is also very windy, we were glad we had a good tent. I might have been able to put up with all of that but here is the worst part - the bathrooms for the campground were closed and emitting sewer gas! (to be fair there are other bathrooms/showers to use at the store/gas station) It was terrible! When the wind would blow towards us it was unbearable. We moved over to the Riley Creek Campground in the park after one night and could have not been happier with the change of venue! When we left the kid at the front desk apologized but said "I'm not allowed to give any refunds". That's alright, you couldn't pay me to stay here again.
