Perfect mix of rustic Alaska experience with luxury comforts

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jul 11, 2023
We’ve wanted to do Alaska for years, but we were worried about where to stay because it always looked too “sportsman” for a trip with the whole family. We have an 8 yo boy (that part’s a slam dunk) and an 11 yo girl that prefers things more refined.

We chose Stillpoint because it looked like we could get the full Alaska experience and satisfy the whole family. It exceeded our expectations and was an exceptional experience.

Some specifics we really liked:

1. The location is a stunning cove only accessible by water (e.g boat, float-plane, etc). Very calm and peaceful as the whole cove is wake-free and full of wildlife (otters, seals, eagles). The tide swings are huge - 10-25 feet so the water is always gently moving to keep it fresh and interesting. The mosquitos weren’t too bad for us, but we were there in late June ‘23 so maybe that was a factor.

2. Our cabin was secluded and had a great view with a deck that looked over the cove (I think most/all of them do). We didn’t spend much time there because we were always doing things, but it had everything we needed. One note that I’m not sure I fully appreciated beforehand is that the bathroom is private to the cabin, but in its own little room just a few feet from the cabin entrance. All the plumbing and showers are normal and worked great. But, for those of us that get up in the night to use the bathroom, you do walk a few feet outside. Ultimately I found it to be super cool to wake up at 2:00 am, walk outside to an incredibly peaceful scene while it was still fully light outside (we were there toward the end of June). We were worried about sleeping with so much daylight, but it turned out to not be an issue for any of us.

3. The food was perhaps the most surprising. We expected good food, but this was fabulous. Beautiful presentations for every meal and it tasted great. I don’t know how they manage to do this with how hard it must be to keep the kitchen stocked in this remote location. Lots of vegetables and herbs from their garden. For example, the “special” for breakfast one day was “kimchee toast with scrambled eggs”. Not what I’d expect from an Alaska lodge, but wow it was amazing. And the oysters were the best we’ve ever had - from right there in Kachemak Bay. And they taught us how to shuck them so we ordered 6 dozen and had them shipped to us from the oyster coop on the Homer spit. Highly recommend this.

4. The excursions were great. We saw bears, caught lots of halibut and salmon, and went on great hikes. All of the excursions were led by great folks with top-rate equipment and tailored to our ability level. The first day we did a 2-3 mile hike to a glacier lake and kayaked around giant chunks of ice - it felt like a National Geographic movie. And they packed us great lunches we ate by a campfire on the shore.

5. The team that runs Stillpoint is special and has a family feel. They seem to love what they do and, because it’s such a small lodge with only a few families at any one time, you get to know the people and it doesn’t feel “corporate” or stiff. Everyone chips in to make the guest experience work - the chefs, guides, masseuses, etc. When you’re there you become part of their extended family and they really go out of their way to make it special. For example, we had trouble getting to the Homer airport due to some traffic issues on the Homer spit. They literally helped us drag our luggage by hand over a mile so we could get passed the traffic and catch our flight on time to get home. It’s a story you should ask them to share with you!

In summary, Stillpoint was the perfect mix of rustic Alaska experience with the comforts of feeling at home with wonderful people who would bend over backwards to make our stay special. Thank you to the team and Stillpoint!

We had the most wonderful 4th of July weekend at Stillpoint Lodge. The staff was friendly, top-notch, and extremely professional, the food was beyond delicious, the scenery out every single window was incredible, and the lovely private Alaskan cabins makes this place 100% a 5 star lodge.
We hiked up a waterfall, explored the coast of Halibut Cove from the boat, went to a beach to collect sea-glass, saw about 50 starfish in the tide pools along the beach and a black bear all on the first day. The second day we went on a first class fishing charter and slayed the halibut, saw whales up close and another black bear on the beach. Bald Eagles are everywhere and seeing sea otters and seals playing in Halibut Cove is common as well. The last day we had a massage, relaxed, and reflected on life, adventures we had just had, and the beauty of Alaska. Each evening after dinner, we decided to meet up with friends and gather around the fire pit, some to make s’mores and others to have a glass of wine. Every second of our 3 day visit to Stillpoint was completely enjoyable. Whether your looking for a special place to share time with family or friends, bring the kids, or a romantic weekend away, Stillpoint caters to everyone. It absolutely did not disappoint!

I would give Stillpoint Lodge 6 starts if we could. My family travels regularly and would place Stillpoint amongst our favorite trips. Incredible property, gourmet meals, and beautiful accommodations complement the truly unspoiled beauty of Halibut Bay. The excursions will generate lifetime memories. We enjoyed bear viewing, fishing and the glacier hike. We also enjoyed having time to simply enjoying the property. Most importantly, the staff are truly special. We felt like we were saying goodbye to friends who welcomed us to their Alaskan home. If you are thinking of a trip to Alaska combing luxury accommodations, outdoor excursions and rustic beauty, you've found your spot.

Our first time to Alaska and we couldn't have asked for anything more. We were warmly welcomed at the Homer airport and driven to the marina for our boat ride to Halibut Cove. On the ride over we detoured to see Gull Island and were told all about the history of the area. Beka (the GM) and staff were waiting for us at the dock- like family welcoming us home.
After enjoying a 4 star lunch (the first of many incredible meals) we were taken to our cabin. The view was amazing and so peaceful. Throughout our stay we would see otters, eagles and even a bear across the cove. The bed was so comfortable and we felt like we were in our own little slice of paradise.
We kayaked and sea cycled around the cove, relaxed with early morning yoga, hiked on the Native Trail, flew in a seaplane (for the first time), went bear watching on Crescent Lake, hiking and glacier kayaking on Grewingk Lake (it was exhilarating), relaxed with amazing massages, shared our daily exploits at Happy Hour and ate way too much amazing food (this was definitely world class dining).
The staff at Stillpoint were the friendliest, hardest working, multi talented, knowledgeable, accommodating and fun group we have ever encountered. You really feel like you're part of a family. Thanks to all of you for helping us to escape the worries of the day and find a place to relax and enjoy life.

We are a family of five with three young adult kids. We had an amazing trip.

Although remote, this lodge lacks for nothing. Delicious food, well- appointed cabins (robes, water, tea) and a location like no other are just the beginning the experience.

The staff goes above and beyond, from knowing our names upon arrival, having our sizes ready for gear in the gear cave to sharing their personal stories …the staff really made our trip. We went on a hike to a glacial lake where we kayaked, went bear watching at Crescent Lake, went halibut fishing and for a fat tire bike ride. The most unexpected, and unplanned experience, was watching orca in the lodge’s small boat between Homer and Halibut Cove for over two hours. Our guide was just as excited as we were. Orcas were spotted while we were eating our breakfast so we scrapped kayaking to see whales. Love how the staff is flexible and really helped make the most of our stay.

I would recommend telling Beka, the GM, what you activities you wsnt to do when you book. Tours in Alaska book up well in advance and weather is unpredictable. She planned everything for us, including our float plane trip to Stillpoint.

As I am high-risk, I am genuinely appreciative of the Covid protocols. I felt safe.

This was truly the trip of a lifetime! Thanks, Beka and crew!

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave an excellent rating. We really appreciate that you chose to stay with us and trusted Stillpoint to make your Alaska vacation amazing! Your family took advantage of a wide range of activities, and getting to spend two hours with the orcas must have been unforgettable! A big "Thank You" from our whole staff for the generous gratuity!

We love that you are giving future guests some good advice to talk with us about their interest in certain activities. You're so right! Alaska has become even more of a popular destination and we are amazed at how quickly the tours sell out! Book early and we will work hard to get those excursions booked early, too!

We also pleased to learn that you felt safe with our Covid protocols. Our goal is to stay up to date on the latest safety precautions, and we've just announced we'll be requiring proof of vaccination for all staff and guests for our 2022 season.

Please let us know what we can do for you in the future...

Our best from Alaska!
