“Absolutely delicious, fresh seafood, excellent service”
Reviewed July 1, 2014

We spent a week in Haines, sampling every restaurant there (there are few good ones). We were fortunate to be served by Jessie, who we had met earlier at the Haines-Scagway fast ferry location. She is a dream person who attends to your every need. We began our meal with the green apple caramelized flatbread along with a caesar salad. We each ordered the crab encrusted halibut and were served an ample portion cooked to perfection. Coffee completed our meal. This is not an inexpensive place to eat (bill $91.00) but is certainly equal to the meals we had in Juneau for the same price. Too bad we ate here the last night of our trip, for we certainly would have gone back.

“The best in Haines!”
Reviewed June 28, 2014

The service, food, and setting was excellent! A charming restaurant in the old Halsingland Hotel in Fort Seward with beautiful presentations of the food was a surprise to us in this little town. This was one of our few dinners in our entire Alaskan trip that used real linens with tablecloths. Nice.

“Fine dining in the bar”
Reviewed June 17, 2014

We were staying near this hotel and ending up dining here for three nights running, the halibut and chips were so good. Seriously, halibut and chips three nights in a row! We ate in the bar area after enjoying a few drinks and we ordered from the bar menu although our friendly waitperson said we could also order from the restaurant menu if we wanted. As well as the fresh, perfectly cooked halibut in a golden crispy beer batter, we enjoyed some fantastic desserts which were both works of art and tasty. It was a real pleasant surprise to find such well presented and good tasting food in Haines. Top marks!

“Halsingland Hotel”
Reviewed February 14, 2014

Ate at the Halsingland Hotel three nights. Good food, timely service and friendly staff. Made the mistake of trying to eat at another restaurant one night (it had been advertised as a gourmet restaurant). Waited an hour and only had our drinks delivered to our table. Never did receive our food. We left and went back to the Halsingland Hotel. Their restaurant was just closing but they stayed open and fed us. Will always be grateful.

“Not worth a 50 year wait”
Reviewed October 4, 2013

We ate at the barroom in the Halsingland Hotel on two occasions. We lived in Haines 50 years ago and the Halsingland Hotel was then renowned for its food. We were poor students working locally for the summer and could not afford to eat there. Recently we returned to Haines for a visit and could now afford to eat at the Hotel; so we had our long delayed meal. Our first visit was in the late afternoon and we ate in the barroom. We both had the pulled pork sandwich. It was extremely spicy. I have lived and traveled in Arizona, New Mexico, Mexico, and central America and never have I eaten a more highly spiced meal. It was too hot for my wife. She took one bite and stopped eating. I finished the sandwich, but later experienced stomach pains and wished I had been as smart as my wife. The waitress saw my wife ate only one bite and asked her why. My wife said the sandwich was too spicy to eat and the waitress said "A lot of people say that". I guess the chef doesn't care. Our second visit occurred because this was the only restaurant open and we had no choice. We played it safe and ordered a hamburger. The bartender is also the waitress and there were only two local people at the bar plus ourselves. She took our order, after ignoring us for a while, and resumed her chatting with the two locals. Half an hour later we received two ice cold hamburgers and fries. The waitress/bartender seemed put out when we asked for more water, ketchup, and another beer. Obviously our hamburgers sat around for a long time before she could be bothered to bring them from the kitchen. We will never go back to the Halsingland Hotel. My wife's comment was "This place was certainly not worth the 50 year wait." I guess the the Halsingland is living on their former reputation.
