Captain's Choice Motel
Ranked #3 of 4 Hotels in Haines
Reviewed August 6, 2012

When visiting Haines, don't expect a Waldorf Astoria...but the Captain's Choice makes the best of what they have.

Not many hotels in Alaska have an air conditioner and that's o.k., but a lot of them don't have fans, either. Thankfully, my room had a small desk fan which helped me to sleep.

The bed was comfortable and the service was o.k. If I'm ever in Haines again, I'll book a room at the Captain's Choice.

A friend and I spent two nights at the Captain's Choice Motel in Haines Alaska in June. We knew that Haines was not a large town and did not offer a lot of options for hotels/motels, and this one appeared to be our best option. We did not expect a luxury hotel, but we hoped for clean and comfortable. Upon arrival by ferry in Haines, we were picked up by the courtesy shuttle and taken to the hotel. The driver was very friendly and nice. Our check-in was swift and accurrate. Upon entering our room we were dissappointed to discover the carpet looked dirty and old, the bedspreads were worn and outdated, and the closet area reeked of cat urine. We made do for the night, but were thankful that for the second night we had reserved a view room and would be moved. The room we were in for the second night was some better than the one the first night, however in this room we pulled one of the bedspreads off the bed because as we pulled back the covers we noticed an aweful big yellow stain that looked like urine. We could not tell if it had been washed. The parking for the second room was very unsuitable. In fact, we had to park across the street in a closed hotel parking lot as there was no place to park by our hotel. There was road work being done on the street between so it made it very inconvenient for packing our luggage to our room. We also reserved a rental car at the hotel for our stay. We picked up the car upon our arrival at 5 p.m. and reserved it until our departure at two days later. We were told the car was due back at 9 a.m. on the day of our departure. Since we would not be leaving until later that evening we had planned to have the car atleast until 5 p.m. Most car rentals rent by 24 hr incriments. When we were questioned them about this, we were told that they charge from 9 a.m. to 9 a.m. so we had to pay for a full day even though we picked it up in the evening. So, we ended up paying for 3 days when we really only had the care for 48 hours. All in all, we felt ripped off on the car rental. We loved the town of Haines and definately plan to return, however, we will not be staying at the Captain's Choice Motel or renting a car from them.

The front desk is very accomodating, from picking you up at the ferry, to quickly arranging the rental car, and keeping the registration paperwork simple.

The room is tired, but kept up. Everything in the room worked, which was not always the case on my recent trip from Juneau, to Haines, to Wrangell, to Ketchikan.

However, the STEPS are a pain. No avoiding them. From registration you go down the steps. From the parking area in the rear you go up the steps. I was out in the Annex, so steps were not an issue from the rental car to my room. However, the breakfast was upstairs in the restaurant. Checking in and out involved the steps. I grew really tired of the steps.

The breakfast was pretty standard. Bagels, juice, and maybe fruit and yogurt.

Internet access was availble and it worked! Again, not always this case on this trip.

The rental car was the best of all that I rented. Parking was sometimes problematic. If you can back into the space that would be best.

All in all, I was pleased with Captain's Choice and would return.

Clean, quiet and seems to be the best place to stay in Haines, but it leaves something to be desired. The entire room is a bit dated. The wood paneled walls would be an expensive remodel, but if they replaced the bedspreads with something more current it would make a big difference.

There's a fridge and microwave in the room which is definitely nice to have. My room was in the "annex" and right outside the door there was a nice deck area where in good weather one could read a book while overlooking the Lynn Canal.

Friendly check-in , gave me a discount , BUT was it REALLY a discount. When to the room ANNEX - Nice wrapper around the toilet , BUT there was mold on the toilet, GROSS. Called the front desk, rude like I was making things up. Maybe that's why they kept changing my credit card. Got home, a week there 3 to 4 changes on my card. Called back asking WHY, the answer we have different personel during the night and day, that do the books. I really never write things like this on sites , but this one-- scared me.

We stayed here on August 25. Even though getting in on the late ferry we were quickly picked up and taken to the hotel. Great room. The view in the morning was awesome. The breakfast was good and just enough. It is a small town and the hotel gave us the friendly service you think of in a small place. we would assuredly stay here again.
