“Rustic yet charming....”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 27, 2008

While I must admit as we turned off the Glenn Highway heading for Lake Louise Lodge, I had some concerns about what awaited us at the lodge. I should not have been worried as this is a delightful, if a bit rustic, lodge on a gorgeous lake with a wonderful, friendly family in charge. No, it's not a 5 star hotel but the rooms while basic are very comfortable and the hospitality great. Yvette, John, the boys (especially Kegan)and the well behaved dogs make you feel right at home. The bar/dining room is pleasant with lots of local color. Dinner and breakfast were great. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there and think this would be a good choice for anyone wanting a great location and some time with wonderful local Alaskans. Don't let the location - 16+ miles from the main road discourage you - it's well worth the trip!

Although my wife and I lived in Alaska for over ten years, our first trip to Lake Louise Lodge was in May of 2007. We had visitors from Europe and wanted a comfortable place to relax that was "rustic", but not too much, for their sake. (Believe me, in Alaska, there are a lot of "lodges" that make tent camping in bear country seem highly desirable.) I had heard good reports from other visitors to Lake Louise Lodge, and we were anxious to see for ourselves. We chose to rent two water-less cabins for both economy and atmosphere.

Access is easy thanks to the recently paved 17-miles road off the Glenn Hwy. Whether you're coming from Anchorage, Valdez, or Fairbanks, you're guaranteed nice scenery along the way. Save some shots on your camera, though, because when you head down the Lake Louise Road, you'll find wildlife (caribou, moose, and bear) as well as stunning views of the lake itself from several vantage points. And don't forget to look behind you for a view of Tazlina Lake and glaciers to the south.

When you get to the Lodge, check your worries and big-city pressures at the door. Owners John, Yvette, and their lovely family could not be more welcoming into their home -- that's right, their home.

The magnificent lodge building has grown over the years to accommodate visitors' and family needs alike. Rooms inside the lodge are very comfortable. The water-less cabin accommodations across the parking lot are cozy and somewhat more rustic. All are heated by oil and have electricity, so you'll stay nice and cozy on a chilly evening or a rainy day. Need the toilet or a shower? Walk a few yards to the lodge.

Meal times can be hectic -- show me a home where meals aren't -- and I have heard grumbles from those in a rush. Order a drink from the well-stocked bar and relax. The food is tasty and varied for many, and I can highly recommend a stack of pancakes with local blueberries or homemade syrup and strong coffee to get started in the morning.

Grab your fishing rod and head to the boat dock or hike/drive to one of several easy access points to find a spot to drop your line. If you like to watch birds, you found a good place to spot eagles and seasonal waterfowl. If photography is your game, wildlife and some of the local colorful characters will turn up eventually for a good shot. In winter, the lodge stays busy with snow-machiners and cross-country skiers.

For any season, I can't say enough about the good folks at Lake Louise Lodge. Have fun!

We were in the Glenallen area and took the advice of a forum member. We were on a two week trip in Alaska, and this was the best place. (Our other lodging were hotel/motels). We got the lakeview room ($10 more) The property is very "homey". Our room was very clean. We had a lakeview balcony with rocking chairs. The balcony had stairs to the lakeshore. The setting is abolutely beautiful. The staff was very friendly. Had a great time playing with the extremely well-behaved dog. Room came with breakfast. What a treat!

My boyfriend and I stayed here on a Sat night and few weeks ago and we LOVED it. We had dinner at the lodge, and it was delicious. She makes all of her dressings homemade and we had warm, fresh bread with our meal. It was honestly the best meal we had had in a restaurant in the past month. The lodge itself was cozy and friendly. We'd love to go back sometime and highly recommend it to friends.

During an extended family trip we spent two nights here with an RV with one family staying at the lodge.

The lodge and rooms are both rustic but homey. I like another description of the RV area as ‘cluttered’, but everyone is very friendly as it is a family operation. You cannot beat the location as it overlooks the lake and boat launch.

The RV spot was $17 a night with only a power hookup but clean bathrooms and showers were included.

Be aware the bar/restaurant/lounge is ‘smoker friendly’. It seems to be a fun hangout for all the locals at night. We avoided it after 8 PM since the only smoke we wanted was from the BBQ, which they loaned us.

There is a small playground that the owner son let our Grand children share (thanks Kegan!).

The room ($125 a night) was clean although the sauna was broken. The great lake view made up for that. Breakfast was included with the room.

We all had breakfast there one morning and it was homey, but not memorable.

It is about 25 minutes off the main Glennallen highway, with only the last mile being gravel. Great views all along the way. A bit off the beaten path, but we found it well worth the trip.

This is a "homey" lodge with a nice bar area, a spectacular view and wondorful owners. We chatted for hours about Alaska and the general Lake Louise area. The place is a bit messy with a lot of things going on and a lot of stuff around in the yard, but the setting and the staff make up for all of this. If you could book the king-bed room, upstairs, when there was a display of the aurora, you would have a picture window looking straight across a dark lake at the light show. We were nbot so lucky in May, as it was light all night.
