The Glennallen Rustic B&B is simply one of the most outstanding lodging experiences of my lifetime. This log roomy home had everything, and many wonderful surprises. I couldn't stop taking photos to share with friends and family, because everywhere you looked there were things you want to remember! The queen bed had the softest, most comforting bedding I think I have ever snuggled into. Imagine a room with beautiful leaves on the wallpaper and large windows looking out where the sun is streaming through real trees and birds are flitting and an eagle flies overhead! Not only were there wonderfully fluffy pillows, but one of the memory foam kind. The adjoining bathroom was spacious and well supplied, with wonderful fat towels to wrap up in.
It was tough to leave it, and I ended up staying in this perfect bed snuggling with the iPad (with the available wifi) and sharing the experience on Facebook with thousands of friends. This experience is something they, too, would love to be able to do, and they lived it vicariously through me. The home is in the midst of woods on a large circular gravel drive, and completely loses the feel of being in the middle of the town. The spacious porch has a swing and rocking chair. Every window has nice views from every point in the house. There are sled dogs/huskys in the back yard, so very beautiful, and you feel like this is truly Alaska. To add to that feeling the home is full of Alaska-themed art (especially beautiful salmon and Arctic char sculptures in wood and metal, Alaska Native crafts, and nooks and crannies with pleasant surprises of books or crafts or art to explore). The unique entertainment available -- even a slot machine and shuffleboard -- great books available to read -- a handmade replica of the Titanic -- lovely shiny wood floors and beams -- mean rustic does not mean you are roughing it at this B&B. The large wooden dining table and open kitchen with cathedral ceilings and bamboo ceiling fans give you the feeling of a large lodge, yet it is cosy and intimate and homey in the rooms. No environment, no matter how spectacular, though, can make a perfect B&B. You need to have the right mix of people who truly care for their guests and make them feel at home. The family embrace you, they make you feel you've known each other all your lives, and they are knowledgeable about the people and the area and have great tips on what to do, what to see, and where to go. It was very tough to leave after breakfast, and I truly can't wait to go back! This has my highest recommendation and after 55 years of traveling, that says a lot.
