“Do the Byron Glacier Trail!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 30, 2012

The visitor center has a great view of the lake and mountains. If you are lucky, there will also be some nice ice chunks that have calved off the glacier. Also, do the Byron Glacier Trail, it is fantastic! It is a short (1.2mile each way), easy hike/ walk along the Glacier runoff/ river. The water is incredibly blue and crystal clear. You can walk right up to the glacier and play in the snow.

“Wonderful if you have a National Park or Senior Pass”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 22, 2012

This is an excellent visitor center. Unfortunately the well-made film and exhibits cost $5 unless you have a pass. Each family with someone over 62 will do well to get a pass before coming to Alaska. The rangers were helpful in answering questions.

The front portion is free. Bathrooms, rangers to answer questions, and a large map of the area are in the free section.

We really enjoyed the Portage Glacier Cruise (1 hour). You got nice and close to the glacier with the ranger there to answer questions.

“Memorable Stop”

Worth the detour and visit to the Visitor Center and view of the glacial lake. We did not take the cruise to the face of the glacier. Great photos and you are at the 2 mile tunnel to Whittier.

“Beautiful views of Portage glacier and lake”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 19, 2012

We stopped at the visitor center on a drive back to Girdwood. The views were well worth it. We didn't pay to tour the visitor center but were still about to use the restrooms and other facilities.
