The Aleska Tram is a special treat that should be saved for one of those rare, clear, warm days when you want to experience something different. You are effortlessly carried up the 2200 feet from the Hotel Alyeska to the top of one of the world's most difficult ski runs. It is a Double Black Diamond, 2200' nearly vertical plunge. Good Luck. We just went up for the view and some decent food at the ski cafe. At night, there is a very expensive, reservations required restaurant for all the beautiful people who stay at the Alyeska Hotel.

We stayed at the Hotel Alyeska while on a cruise tour so the tram ticket was included in our package. The adult price is $20 if purchased separately. Having been up there, I think I would have been disappointed in what I received for the price.

When we went up, all areas off of the decking were blocked off except one small area people were throwing snow balls at each other. I had hoped to do a little hiking while up there. The mountain may be open to hiking from the tram later in the season, I am not certain about that- if so, it would be well worth the $20. The 2013 spring was about 3 weeks late in Alaska, so this could have been the issue.

They offer glacier hikes from the tram as well, but they were closed during our stay (again probably due to the late spring).

Once on top, there is a restaurant, a gift shop/museum, cafe, and several viewing platforms. You can see 7 glaciers from up there in the nearby mountain passes. We spent about 30 minutes walking around the limited area and snapping a few photos.

After spending the afternoon on a glacier to our, we stopped in Girdwood to take the tram up to the top of the Alyeska slopes. Still a lot of snow for June-but they have 900 plus " a year!! Nice views! The restaurant needs reservations unless you don't mind eating the same menu in the bar which is what we did! It is elegant but in our shorts and tees we still fit right in! The chicken was excellent! PS - with reservations the tram is free otherwise it is $20 per person, unless you are after 7pm then it's half price!! Wish the gift shop had been open!!

If you are in the area you definitely want to make this easy up and down tram ride from the Alyeska Resort. Its inexpensive really easy to park and ride a shuttle to the tram beautiful views from a really nice cafe / restaurant / ski area on top. You don't have to be going skiing to enjoy this area. Tram runs constantly so you can do this in short period of time.

This was a cool experience. We went up on it twice - we just rode the tram and didn't ski. YOu'll share the ride withy skiers on the way up, but get a solo ride down the mountain. Try to go on a clear day to see the sights. Out first trip up was covered in clouds and that was neat to dissappear, but you don't get the views. We went back a few days later and got to see the whole area. We tried the 7 Glaciers restuarant, too. It was pricey, but you get a free tram ride.
