If you're going to walk across Rarotonga then go with someone that knows the track. It's a tough enough little hike. Pa has done it a few thousand times. He is a fascinating person in his own right and a part of local legend but foe me the safety of going with Pa was worth the price. If you came unstuck up on the mountain by yourself I'm not sure what you would do.

We had the best time hiking up to the "Needle" with Pa. He is a true legend on the island. What a character! We loved hearing all his stories about growing up in the islands, getting attacked by sharks, and saved by dolphins (all true as confirmed by locals).
This hike is very steep and muddy in some places so I recommend wearing the proper shoes. The views from the top are a breathtaking panoramic of Rarotonga.
I HIGHLY recommend you spend the morning with Pa hiking to the needle- it was a true highlight of our trip!

Our local friend had been waiting for the right guests in order to take Pa's cross island walk. It is not a long distance, but starts with a very steep climb (400 plus metres) and for most of the track one is walking over knitted tree roots. Sturdy shoes are recommended. The views from the peak are simply spectacular as you look from one side of Rarotonga to the other. Pa was a great guide, he is very, very knowledgable and, as others have observed, very spiritual. He served delicious fresh fruit during the trek and provided a very tasty tuna sandwich at the end. A half day adventure, pricey for some, but very good value. Don't try the trek on your own. We met one tourist, on his foolish own, who had got lost and was exhausted.

Pa is a fascinating guy and provided a very interesting talk track for the hike. It's a rugged hike which we wouldn't have done on our own, but easy enough with a guide. Spectacular scenery and a great way to see some of the island interior.

Pa is an interesting person and a well known personality that takes groups of holimakers on a walk across the island into the upper bush and hills. He is very knowledgable and tinted with spiritual information also. A great day out with pleasant lunch at the end of the walk. Can be a little muddy at times so wear good shoes. Average fitness only required. We thoroughly enjoyed the day with him and the other hikers. Well recommended
