“The Best Spot On The Island”

All the photos and reviews about this place do not do it justice! This was the perfect spot for our group. I travelled with my wife, my brother and his partner. My brother and girlfriend arrived earlier than the check in time and Joy let them check in as soon as she was ready (10am). My wife and I arrived at 2:30pm and Joy unexpectedly met us at the airport and welcomed us personally. She arranged transfers for us and we we went on our way.

The Navigator is an open plan, two level house that is right on the beach. Waking up every morning to the most perfect view was amazing. We still can't believe that we stayed there. The house is well appointed with a flat screen TV with a hard drive attached with a good selection of Movies and TV Shows. There is a new deck at the back of the house with a big BBQ that we used a couple of times. The gas stove got a lot of use and the water, tea, coffee, milk, sugar and other condiments were provided with no charge. The kitchen has all utensils needed to cook anything you want.

Joy and John are amazing hosts and would come over every few days to clean around the yard and have a chat. With Joy's recommendation, we booked a mobile massage with a masseuse she knew personally and we had massages in front of the beach.

There was a problem with the pool level (we didn't swim in it much because the beach was so close) and Joy and John had a pool person come and fix it on a public holiday.

If there is something that future visitors need to know about this property, is that the two bedrooms are not fully enclosed. They are on the 2nd level and there is no wall facing the beach. You can hear what happens around the whole house from the bedrooms. This wasn't a negative for us but it is something to keep in mind when booking. Apart from that this place was perfect and we will definitely be back!!

“Paradise Found @ Navigator for 5 weeks”

My husband and I spent 2 months (Feb 2/March 28 2015) on Rarotonga and Aitutaki. We spent the month of Feb at the Navigator then another week when we came back from Aitutaki. John and Joy Young own this beautiful 2 story free standing house with both mountain and beach views. The location is in north Muri away from the main part of Muri beach which means no crowds and very few people walking past so you can wear that bikini like I did and got a great tan. It is down a short road off the main coastal road so no road noise and quite private but not isolated. Muri village is walkable so you can walk along the road or the beach to the Pacific and Nautilis Resort, restaurants, cafes, small local stores, Muri Night Market, car rental, the local water filling station beside the police station. We used the tap water in the house with no problem. The open-plan main level is HUGE with 2 living areas. One area centered around the tv has a large comfortable sofa you can lay down on and take a nap and 2 large matching chairs and tv and radio. Because of the mountains we had no tv reception and only 1 radio station that played ukulele music. Outside the Muri area we were able to get a tv station broadcast from NZ for a few hours live each evening. John is looking into getting a sat. feed so he can maybe get CNN. We hope! Yaah! We did miss being connected to the outside. We are huge news people. There is another living area by the kitchen bar and stools which has a wicker couch large enough to lay down on and also a small matching wicker table. John had brought over a new big screen tv and had down loaded a lot of dvd(movies and documentaries and kids games and movies) I watched the entire Homeland and Scandal tv series. The good thing in this house is we were able to connect to the internet with Telecom where we got 1200mgb of data for $50.00NZ the best rate that we had during our entire trip and we stayed at 5 different places--Aitutaki Lagoon Resort, Pacific Resort Aitutaki, TeManava and Cook Bay Villas. Large dinning area with large solid wood table and 6 chairs. Large kitchen with "L" shaped aluminum counter top which keeps everything nice and clean. Kitchen has everything you need to cook 3 course meals which I did often. No oven but you can use the big BBQ on the front deck. I baked a cake on the BBQ! There is also a large 2 piece bathroom on this level. Very convenient. The entire wall across the back of the house is all glass doors which you can open up completely to let the breeze in. We didn't because it was too hot and humid and we had excellent A/C (there are also fans you can use) There are no curtains on these doors. Your view is the deck with a solid wood table umbrella and 4 chairs and the pool with 2 lounge chairs, the white sand beach, blue lagoon and green motu all in your own back yard. Paradise Found!!! Nice hardwood floors through out the house which you sweep using the cute little witches broom. The open sided curved wooden staircase reminds me of being on a ship. You see the view of the mountains in the front of the house as you go up and down the stairs. The 2 bedrooms are upstairs with double size beds and large ensuites. Both have showers and one has a Jacuzzi tub. The house is a semi loft-style so some of the walls of the bedrooms are open. You have access to a large balcony on the 2nd floor with views of the lagoon and good for star gazing at night. The pink coloured house sits beach front on a large lot between the Sokala Resort and the Manea Resort. They have security at night and a parking spot for your car. John Joy and their 2 children come by every few days to cut the grass, clean the pool and collect your used towels and bed sheets. She has tons of bedding and towels so no problem there. She also had a few large blue beach towels. There is also an outdoor shower and foot baths to wash sand off. They have kayaks and paddles, flippers and masks and snorkels. John Young is a descendent of Ned Young of the Mutiny of the Bounty. I think I remember him saying his father was born on Pitcairn Is. This was what made me want to book the Navigator. I love history/geography and when I was a small girl and read about the Bounty I said "one day I will go to the South Pacific and meet these people" And now I have. It was like meeting a celebrity. We are going back so I will have to get his autograph. John start practising writing your name. John and Joy looked after us like family. Our daughter flew over for the month of March. Joy worked her magic and was able to get her over to Aitutaki on the same day she arrived on Raro instead of spending the night waiting for the next flight over like she was booked to do. Joy and Mamma RuRu met her at Raro airport. Loaded her neck with flower leis and stayed with her until she got on the flight. When we picked her up at Aitutaki airport she was so covered in flowers that people were looking at her thinking "who is this person" They made her feel so welcomed and special. Thank you Joy and RuRu. When you are a long way from home and you don't know how things work and don't understand the Maori language it is good to have people like John and Joy to guide you. If you go look after the friendly and obedient dogs- Cookie and her friends. Stumpy not so much. Feed the eels, who live in the government protected stream, with table scrapes. Go and look for the blue star fish in the lagoon and just relax because you are in good hands in PARADISE

From the minute we arrived we knew we were in for something special. The sheer luxury of having space and exclusive use of the house, pool and gorgeous views was fantastic. Our host was very friendly and made us feel right at home. The house was stunning and had everything you could possible want. Made it very hard to leave. We will be back. Thanks again Joy.

The house is fantastic, has everything you need. Big, spacious and the view is amazing. Situated in the perfect spot on Muri lagoon, sheltered enough that you don't notice the wind if it comes up. The private infinity pool really makes the house! So close to all that Muri beach has to offer, local restaurants, resorts, Te Vara Nui nightlife. Joy was amazing throughout the stay, organising taxis and recommending places to go / see. Thank you both, Joy and John. We will definitely be back!

“My Magical Month at Muri”

What can I say but pure BLISS. I had the most wonderful stay for the month of August to celebrate turning 50. The Navigator was a fantastic find, perfect for what I needed and I really enjoyed meeting Joy, John and the family who were always available to help with any querie.
Whilst the weather wasn't the best for the month the place more than made up for it with plenty of space to gaze out over the water and chill. I brought lots of food from NZ to supplement the amazing local restaurants. Would I go again….at a blink, Im already trying to work out how I can make this happen but for longer.
Thanks Joy and John, Im back just over a week and really miss the warmth, the experience and the friendship. Thanks for making the holiday so special

Management Response

It was a pleasure to have met you, family and friends. We look forward to your return. We have since decided to put a decking at the back so you can enjoy the beautiful views of the mountain at the back now. Builder is in process as we speak. We hope you had a lot of memories and we will look forward to meeting you once again in paradise. Regards John & Joy.

My wife and I, with our eldest son, stayed at the Navigator for 8 days at the end of June.
The accomodation was excellent , with each bedroom having its own ensuite.
We didn't get to see as much of Rarotonga as we would have liked,as the trip was for our youngest sons wedding; but it really didn't matter as the Navigator is in such an idyllic setting. Joy, John, and the neighbour Laurence were very helpful with their local knowledge and advised on places to shop etc. We did manage to do some snorkelling at Fruits of Rarotong but had just as much fun snorkelling and kayaking in the lagoon with our own sandy beach. With friends and relatives dropping by, the pool and the BBQ came in very handy, as did the entertainment from the friendly obedient dogs and the eels in the creek! As well as the BBQ's we did manage to eat out and I can recmmend the Mooring Cafe for fish burger lunches, and on our last night a group of 13 of us had the best meal on the Island at Kikau Hut.

“Great home right on the beach- privacy, pool, and view!”
Reviewed June 23, 2014 for a stay in June 2014

We spent a week at the Navigator for our Honeymoon and we loved it. We felt so lucky and blessed to stay at such a nice place.

What we loved about the Navigator:
-John and Joy: The owners of the home and your hosts are incredibly kind, warm, and helpful people. They are locals and live just up the Island from the Navigator so if you need anything, they'll be there for you quickly. When we arrived, Joy showed us around the place, giving us tips and ideas for our stay there. We say Joy and John several times throughout the week, stopping by to give us more towels, cleaning the pool, and answering any questions we had. They even stored one of our bags when we went to Aitutaki for a few days and dropped it off for us at the airport when we flew back in before our flight back to the US.

-Location Location Location-
The Navigator sits on Muri Lagoon, literally right on the beach. It has an absolutely stunning view of the lagoon and the island across the way, and the ocean as well out to the right. It sits on the North end of Muri beach, a very quiet section of the beach that was rarely visited by anyone. We saw people walk by only a few times throughout the day. The "busy" section of the beach is a short walk, and on the 1km stretch of Muri beach, we rarely saw more than 20 people on the entire beach. So pretty! Also nearby are shops - Laundry (3 min walk) - for $12 you can get a big bag of laundry done at the end of the driveway- Icecream (3 min walk) - several rental car agencies, a telecom cook islands store and over 15 restaurants within a 4-12 minute walk. It is a great spot.

The Home-
We loved the open floor plan. Great views of the lagoon on both floors with big windows, well equipped kitchen, and beautiful hard wood floors. The Air Conditioning worked great, and we slept SO well on the comfortable beds. In the day we'd open the house up and enjoy the sea breezes through the windows.

Such a fun place to stay! We'd recommend it for anyone. This is one of the best locations in Raro and we felt so lucky to stay here.
